A novel strategy for gas mitigation during swine manure odour treatment using seaweed and a microbial consortium

Gas emissions from swine farms have an impact on air quality in the Republic of *** manure stored in deep pits for a long time is a major source of harmful gas ***,we evaluated the mitigation of emissions of ammonia(N H 3),hydrogen sulfide(H2S)and amine gases from swine manure with biological products such as seaweed(Sargassum homeri)and a microbial consortium(Bacillus subtilis(1.2×10^9 CFU/mL),Thiobacillus sp.(1.0×10^10 CFU/mL)and Saccharomyces cerevisiae(2.0×10^9 CFU/mL))used as additives due to their promising benefits for nutrient ***,seaweed powder masking over two days provided notable control of over 98%-100%of the gas ***,significant control of gas emissions was especially pronounced when seaweed powder masking along with a microbial consortium was applied,resulting in a gas reduction rate of 100%for NH 3,amines and H2S over 10 days of *** results also suggested that seaweed powder masking and a microbial consortium used in combination to reduce the gas emissions from swine manure reduced odour compared with that observed when the two additives were used *** the consortium,seaweed decreased total volatile fatty acid(VFA)*** proposed novel method of masking with a microbial consortium is promising for mitigating hazardous gases,simple,and environmentally *** research is warranted to determine the mechanisms underlying the seaweed and substrate interactions.

Dose modest alcohol consumption(MAC)help the health care?There is a mainstream that MAC may not aggravate or even reduce cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality(1,2).Light(≤3 drink/week)or moderate(>3 to≤14 drinks/week for men or>3 to≤7 drinks/week for women)alcohol consumption were reducing risk of mortality for all causes and cardiovascular disease(2).In 2018,combined analysis of 599,912 current drinkers in 83 prospective studies of high income countries,showed alcohol consumption was positive and curvilinear association with all-cause mortality and roughly linearly associated with a cardiovascular disease other than myocardial infarction(1).They recommend the threshold for lowest risk of all-cause mortality was 100 g/week.

Tribological behavior of TiN,AlTiN,and AlTiCrN coatings in atmospheric and vacuum environments

In this study,the tribological characteristics of TiN,AlTiN,and AlTiCrN coatings sliding against a SUS420J1 stainless steel pin were investigated in atmospheric and vacuum *** coatings were deposited on SUS440C substrates using the arc-physical vapor deposition *** friction and wear behavior of the coatings were evaluated based on the systematic analyses of the friction coefficient data as well as the physical and chemical state of the wear *** results revealed that the friction coefficients of the SUS440C specimen and AlTiCrN coatings increased,whereas those of the TiN and AlTiN coatings decreased when the environment was changed from atmospheric to *** was confirmed that the formation of an oxide layer and adsorption of oxides on the surface were dominant factors that influenced the tribological behavior in the atmospheric *** the other hand,the compatibility,oxidation inhibition,and droplets of the surface mainly affected the frictional characteristics in the vacuum *** results of this work are expected to aid in the selection of proper coating materials for tribological systems operating in a vacuum.

Assembly of charged aerosols on non-conducting substrates via ion-assisted aerosol lithography （IAAL）

The development of ion-assisted aerosol lithography （IAAL） has enabled fabrication of complex three- dimensional nanoparticle （NP） structures on conducting substrates. In this work, the applicability of the IAAL technique was investigated on non-conducting substrates. The NP structure growth process on a non-conducting substrate was found to self-terminate and the structures subsequently repel incoming charged NPs and scatter them away. Electric field calculations supported the experimental findings and confirmed that the electric field distortions owing to charge build-up within the structures prevented additional NP deposition thereon. To regulate the charge build-up without compromising the number of NPs available for assembly, a corona discharger and an ion trap were implemented. By varying the number of ions available in the assembly process, an optimum level of ion injection was found that allowed for a prolonged （〉120 rain） assembly of NP structures on non-conducting substrates without the unwanted scattering of NPs.

Let-7 miRNA and CDK4 siRNA co-encapsulated in Herceptin-conjugated liposome for breast cancer stem cells

Recently,breast cancer stem cells(BCSCs)have rapidly emerged as a novel target for the therapy of breast cancer as they play critical roles in tumor growth,maintenance,metastasis,and ***-7 miRNA is known to be downregulated in a variety of cancers,especially BCSCs,whereas CDK4 being overexpressed in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2(HER-2)overexpressing tumor *** this study,let-7 miRNA and CDK4-specific siRNA were chosen as therapeutic agents and co-encapsulated in Herceptinconjugated cationic liposomes for breast cancer *** size,zeta potential,and encapsulation efficacy of mi/siRNA-loaded PEGylated liposome conjugated with Herceptin(Her-PEG-Lipo-mi/siRNA)were 176 nm,28.1 mV,and 99.7%±0.1%,*** cellular uptake(86%)was observed by fluorescence microscopy when SK-BR-3 cells were treated with Her-PEG-Lipo-mi/***,the increased amount of let-7a mRNA and decreased amount of cellular CDK4 mRNA were observed by qRT-PCR when SK-BR-3 cells were treated with Her-PEG-Lipo-mi/siRNA,which was even more so when SK-BR-3 stem cells were used(197 vs 768 times increase for let-7a,62%vs 68%decrease for CDK4).Growth inhibition(65%)andmigration arrest(0.5%)of the cellswere achieved by the treatment of the cells with Her-PEG-Lipo-mi/siRNA,but not withmi/siRNA complex or other *** conclusion,an efficient liposomal delivery system for the combination of miRNA and siRNA to target the BCSCs was developed and could be used as an efficacious therapeuticmodality for breast cancer.

Solar-driven photocatalytic CO_(2) reduction to produce valuable chemicals and fuels offers an attractive strategy in alleviating the energy *** quantum dots(PtQDs)with TiO_(2) nanowire(TiO_(2)NW)/Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene heterostructures(Pt-TiO_(2)NW/Ti_(3)C_(2)) with tight interfacial contacts between the various components were prepared at room temperature via oxidation *** incorporated PtQDs played crucial roles as electron conduction bridges supported by the cocatalyst effect,effectively enhancing the separation efficiencies of photoinduced electron/hole pairs and improving CO_(2) reduction under simulated solar light *** Pt-TiO_(2)NW/Ti_(3)C_(2) heterostructures exhibited remarkable carbon monoxide(CO)and methane(CH_(4)) production at respective rates of 38.14 and 36.15μmol g^(-1)after 10 h of simulated solar light irradiation,an apparent quantum yield of 1.68%,and 79.2%selectivity for *** photocatalytic activities of the Pt-TiO_(2) NW/Ti_(3)C_(2) heterostructures for CO_(2) reduction were significantly enhanced compared to those of TiO_(2)NW/Ti_(3)C_(2) and the single-component photocatalysts,and they exhibited remarkable stabilities even after five *** addition,the densities of states and electronic characteristics of Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene and Pt-TiO_(2)NW/Ti_(3)C_(2) were studied using density functional theory,and a synergistic mechanism of the improvement in CO_(2) photoreduction is proposed.

Evaluation of particle growth systems for sampling and analysis of atmospheric fine particles

Three types of water-based condensational growth systems, which can enable particles to grow in size to facilitate sampling and subsequent chemical analysis, were evaluated. The first one is a mixing type growth system where aerosols are mixed with saturated water vapor, the second one is a thermal diffusive growth system where warm flow enters cold-walled tube, and the third one is a laminar flow type where cold flow enters a warm wet-wall tube. Hygroscopic sodium chloride （NaCl）, ammonium sulfate （（NH4）2SO4） and ammonium nitrate （NH4N03）, and non-hygroscopic polystyrene latex （PSL） particles, in the size range of 50-400 nm, were used to determine their growth factors through the growth systems. Our data showed that the third-type growth system could enable particles to grow most efficiently regardless of their hygroscopic property. Collection efficiency of particles in the size range of 0.05-2.5 μm, in a continuous aerosol sampler after they passed through the third-type growth system was about 100%, suggesting that the third-type growth system would he the most useful among the tested growth systems for sampling and subsequent chemical analysis of fine and ultrafine particles.

Improvement of erectile function by Korean red ginseng （Panax ginseng） in a male rat model of metabolic syndrome

The seriousness of metabolic syndrome is not due to the disease itself but its promotion of other diseases, such as erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. We investigated the effects of Korean red ginseng （KRG, Panax ginseng） extract on erectile function in a rat model of metabolic syndrome. We divided the rats into three groups： control, metabolic syndrome＋normal saline （N/S） and metabolic syndrome ＋ KRG. To determine the occurrence of metabolic syndrome in all groups, body weight and various biochemical parameters （e.g., blood glucose, insulin, cholesterol） were measured, and the intra-abdominal glucose tolerance test was performed. To investigate penile erection, the peak intracavernosal pressure （ICP）, mean arterial pressure （MAP） and Masson＇s trichrome stain were evaluated. Erectile function was also investigated by measuring the cyclic guanosine monophosphate （cGMP） levels of the corpus cavernosum. We found that the various biochemical parameters and body weight were similar in the metabolic syndrome＋KRG group and the control group, although the values were slightly higher. The peak ICP/MAP ratio of the metabolic syndrome＋N/S group was markedly decreased compared to the other groups. The cGMP level of the corpus cavernosum in the metabolic syndrome＋N/S group was significantly lower than that of the other groups. As demonstrated in this model of metabolic syndrome with erectile dysfunction, KRG may improve erectile function.

Comparison Between Full-Scale and Model Experiments of Oil Fences

This study examines the performance of an air expansion oil fence system as deployed in two different configurations. Geometric and tension characteristics of the oil fence are investigated for （1） the system attached to two vessels and （2） the system attached to one vessel with spreading devices. Since full-scale testing can be time consuming and expensive, another component of the study was to examine how well models would perform. A scaling technique was developed and a set of experiments were conducted with a 1/20-th scale model of the oil fence in a towing tank facility. Performance resalts from the model tests were compared with those conducted at sea. The tension （N） in the full-scale results were represented by R = avb, where v is the current velocity in m/s and the values for a and b used for comparison purposes. Both sets of full-scale and model tests were conducted with an oil fence opening of 120 m and 160m. In the full-scale experiment with spreading devices attaahed to the forward ends of the oil fence, the horizontal distance of the spreading devices has a tendency to linearly increase as the current velocity increases when the warp length is as short as 50 m, but to linearly decrease as the current velocity increases when the warp length is extended to 100 m and 150 m. The spreading distance at uniform current velocitys in the model test increases as the warp length is extended. While there is no significant difference of spreading distance between the cases of 100 m and 150 m, the spreading distance becomes shorter when the warp length is 50 m.
