Characterization of hidden rules linking symptoms and selection of acupoint using an artificial neural network model

Comprehension of the medical diagnoses of doctors and treatment of diseases is important to understand the underlying principle in selecting appropriate acupoints.The pattern recognition process that pertains to symptoms and diseases and informs acupuncture treatment in a clinical setting was explored. A total of 232 clinical records were collected using a Charting Language program. The relationship between symptom information and selected acupoints was trained using an artificial neural network (ANN). A total of 11 hidden nodes with the highest average precision score were selected through a tenfold cross-validation. Our ANN model could predict the selected acupoints based on symptom and disease information with an average precision score of 0.865 (precision, 0.911;recall, 0.811). This model is a useful tool for diagnostic classification or pattern recognition and for the prediction and modeling of acupuncture treatment based on clinical data obtained in a real-world setting. The relationship between symptoms and selected acupoints could be systematically characterized through knowledge discovery processes, such as pattern identification.

Changes in Small Intestinal Motility and Related Hormones by Acupuncture Stimulation at Zusanli(ST 36) in Mice

Objective： To clarify the effects of acupuncture stimulation at Zusanli（ST 36） on the hormonal changes. Methods： Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice received acupuncture stimulation at acupoint ST 36 or Quchi（LI 11） once a day for 3 or 5 days in the acupuncture-stimulated groups, but not received in the normal group（n=6 in each group）. On day 3 or 5, animals were given 0.1 m L of charcoal orally with a bulbed steel needle, 30 min after the last acupuncture stimulation. Ten minutes later, mice were anesthetized, and the intestinal transit and the concentrations of vasoactive intestinal peptide（VIP）, motilin, ghrelin and gastrin in the serum were measured. Results： Compared to no acupuncture stimulation, acupuncture stimulation at ST 36 for 5 days increased the intestinal transit and down-regulated the concentration of VIP and up-regulated the concentrations of motilin, ghrelin and gastrin（P〈0.05 or 0.01）, whereas acupuncture stimulation at LI 11 did not change them significantly（P〉0.05）. Conclusion： Acupuncture stimulation at ST 36 for 5 days enhances the small intestinal motility and regulates the secretion of hormones related to small intestinal motility.

ACUPUNCTURE STIMULATION IMPROVES MEMORY IMPAIRMENT INDUCED BY SCOPOLAMINE IN RATS

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine whether acupuncture stimulation at the Baihui(GV20) improves memory defects caused by administration of scopolamine(SCO) to the rats.The effects of acupuncture stimulation at the GV20 on the cholinergic system as well as the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF) and cAMP-response element-binding protein(CREB) in the hippocampus were also investigated.Methods: Male rats were administered with SCO(2 mg/kg, i.p.) once daily for 14 days.Acupuncture stimulation at GV20 was performed for 5 min before SCO injection.Results: Acupuncture stimulation at GV20 improved memory impairment as measured by the passive avoidance test(PAT) and reduced the escape latency for finding the platform in the Morris water maze(MWM) test.Acupuncture stimulation at the GV20 significantly alleviated memory-associated decreases in the expression levels of choline acetyltransferase(ChAT), BDNF and CREB proteins in the hippocampus.Additionally, acupuncture stimulation at the GV20 significantly restored the expression of choline transporter 1(CHT1), vesicular acetylcholine transporter(VAChT), BDNF and CREB mRNAs in the hippocampus.Conclusion: These results demonstrated that acupuncture stimulation at the GV20 has significant neuroprotective effects against neuronal impairment and memory dysfunction caused by SCO in rats.Thus, these findings suggested that acupuncture stimulation at the GV20 might be a useful therapy in various neurodegenerative diseases for the improvement of cognitive functioning via stimulating cholinergic enzyme activities and regulating BDNF and CREB expression in the brain.

Comparison of EUV Photomask Metrology Between CD-AFM and TEM

Accurate metrology of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) photomask is a crucial task. In this paper, two different methods for reference EUV photomask metrology are compared. One is the critical dimension atomic force microscopy (CD-AFM). In the measurements, the contribution of its AFM tip geometry is usually the dominant error source, as measured AFM images are the dilated results of measured structures by the AFM tip geometry. To solve this problem, a bottom-up approach has been applied in calibrating the (effective) AFM tip geometry where the result is traceably calibrated to the lattice constant of silicon crystals. The other is transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For achieving measurement traceability, structure features are measured in pairs in TEM images;thus the distance between the structure pair calibrated by a metrological AFM in prior can be applied to determine the magnification of the TEM image. In this study, selected photomask structures are calibrated by the CD-AFM, and then sample prepared and measured by high-resolution TEM nearly at the same location. The results are then compared. Of six feature groups compared, the results agree well within the measurement uncertainty, indicating excellent performance of the developed methodology. This research supports the development of a photomask standard, which is applied as a “reference ruler” with improved low measurement uncertainty in photomask fabs.

Colloidal quantum-dot(QD)light-emitting diodes(QLEDs)have been in the forefront of future display devices due to their outstanding optoelectronic properties.However,a complicated solution-process for patterning the red,green,and blue QDs deteriorates the QLED performance and limits the resolution of full-color displays.Herein,we report a novel concept of QD–organic hybrid light-emitting diodes by introducing an organic blue common layer(BCL)which is deposited through a common mask over the entire sub-pixels.Benefitted from the optimized device structure,red and green QLEDs retained their color coordinates despite the presence of the BCL.Furthermore,adopting the BCL improved the external quantum efficiency of green and red QLEDs by 38.4%and 11.7%,respectively,due to the Förster resonance energy transfer from the BCL to the adjacent QD layers.With the BCL structure,we could simply demonstrate a full-color QD-organic hybrid device in a single substrate.We believe that this device architecture is practically applicable for easier fabrication of solution-processed,highresolution,and full-color displays with reduced process steps.

Enzyme-amplified SERS immunoassay with Ag-Au bimetallic SERS hot spots

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)enables rapid detection of single molecules with high specificity.However,quantitative and sensitive SERS analysis has been a challenge due to the lack of reliable SERS-active materials.In this study,we developed a quantitative SERS-based immunoassay using enzyme-guided Ag growth on Raman labeling compound(RLC)-immobilized gold nanoparticle(Au NP)-assembled silica NPs(SiO2@Au-RLC@Ag).The enzyme amplified Ag+reduction as well as Ag growth on the RLC-immobilized Au NP-assembled silica NPs(SiO2@Au-RLC),which resulted in a significant increase in SERS signal.In the presence of target antigens such as immunoglobulinG(IgG)or prostate-specific antigen(PSA),Ab1-Antigen-Ab2 immune complex with alkaline phosphatase triggered an enzyme-catalyzed reaction to convert 2-phospho-L-ascorbic acid(2-phospho-L-AA)to ascorbic acid(AA).As produced AA reduced Ag+to Ag,forming an Ag hot spot on the surface of SiO2@Au-RLC,which enhanced the SERS signal of SiO2@Au-RLC@Ag in a solution with a target antigen concentration.The plasmonic immunoassay for IgG detection showed a high linearity of SERS intensity in the range of 0.6 to 9.0 ng/mL with a detection limit(LOD)of 0.09 ng/mL,while an LOD of 0.006 ng/mL was obtained for PSA.The results indicate that the sensitivity of our novel SERS-based immunoassay is higher than that of conventional enzyme-based colorimetric immunoassays.

Inflammation is a primary defense process against various extracellular stimuli,such as viruses,pathogens,foods,and environmental pollutants.When cells respond to stimuli for short periods of time,it results in acute or physiological inflammation.However,if the stimulation is sustained for longer time or a pathological state occurs,it is known as chronic or pathological inflammation.Several studies have shown that tumorigenesis in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is closely associated with chronic inflammation,for which abnormal cellular alterations that accompany chronic inflammation such as oxidative stresses,gene mutations,epigenetic changes,and inflammatory cytokines,are shared with carcinogenic processes,which forms a critical cross-link between chronic inflammation and carcinogenesis.Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β is a multi-potent cytokine that plays an important role in regulation of cell growth,apoptosis and differentiation.Most importantly,TGF-β is a strong anti-inflammatory cytokine that regulates the development of effector cells.TGF-β has a suppressive effect on carcinogenesis under normal conditions by inhibiting abnormal cell growth,but on the other hand,many GI cancers originate from uncontrolled cell growth and differentiation by genetic loss of TGF-β signaling molecules or perturbation of TGF-β adaptors.Once a tumor has developed,TGF-β exerts a promoting effect on the tumor itself and stromal cells to enhance cell growth,alter the responsiveness of tumor cells to stimulate invasion and metastasis,and inhibited immune surveillance.Therefore,novel development of therapeutic agents to inhibit TGF-β-induced progression of tumor and to retain its growth inhibitory activities,in addition to anti-inflammatory actions,could be useful in oncology.In this review,we discuss the role of TGF-β in inflammation and carcinogenesis of the GI tract related to abnormal TGF-β signaling.

Comparing upper gastrointestinal X-ray and endoscopy for gastric cancer diagnosis in Korea

AIM:To compare the cost and accuracy of upper gastrointestinal(GI)X-ray and upper endoscopy for diagnosis of gastric cancer using data from the 2002-2004 Korean National Cancer Screening Program(NCSP). METHODS:The study population included 1 503 646 participants in the 2002-2004 stomach cancer screening program who underwent upper GI X-ray or endoscopy.The accuracy of screening was defined as the probability of detecting gastric cancer.We calculated the probability by merging data from the NCSP and the Korea Central Cancer Registry.We estimated the direct costs of the medical examination and the tests for up- per GI X-ray,upper endoscopy,and biopsy. RESULTS:The probability of detecting gastric cancervia upper endoscopy was 2.9-fold higher than via upper GI X-ray.The unit costs of screening using upper GI X-ray and upper endoscopy were$32.67 and$34.89, respectively.In 2008,the estimated cost of identifying one case of gastric cancer was$53094.64 using upper GI X-ray and$16 900.43 using upper endoscopy.The cost to detect one case of gastric cancer was the same for upper GI X-ray and upper endoscopy at a cost ratio of 1:3.7. CONCLUSION:Upper endoscopy is slightly more costly to perform,but the cost to detect one case of gastric cancer is lower.

Recent advances towards single biomolecule level understanding of protein adsorption phenomena unique to nanoscale polymer surfaces with chemical variations

Protein adsorption onto polymer surfaces is a very complex and ubiquitous phenomenon whose integrated process impacts essential applications in our daily lives such as food packaging materials,health devices,diagnostic tools,and medical products.Increasingly,novel polymer materials with greater chemical intricacy and reduced dimensionality are used for various applications involving adsorbed proteins on their surfaces.Hence,the nature of protein-surface interactions to consider is becoming much more complicated than before.A large body of literature exists for protein adsorption.However,most of these investigations have focused on collectively measured,ensemble-averaged protein behaviors that occur on macroscale and chemically unvarying polymer surfaces instead of direct measurements at the single protein or sub-protein level.In addition,interrogations of protein-polymer adsorption boundaries in these studies were typically carried out by indirect methods,whose insights may not be suitably applied for explaining individual protein adsorption processes occurring onto nanostructured,chemically varying polymer surfaces.Therefore,an important gap in our knowledge still exists that needs to be systematically addressed via direct measurement means at the single protein and sub-protein level.Such efforts will require multifaceted experimental and theoretical approaches that can probe multilength scales of protein adsorption,while encompassing both single proteins and their collective ensemble behaviors at the length scale spanning from the nanoscopic all the way to the macroscopic scale.In this review,key research achievements in nanoscale protein adsorption to date will be summarized.Specifically,protein adsorption studies involving polymer surfaces with their defining feature dimensions and associated chemical partitions comparable to the size of individual proteins will be discussed in detail.In this regard,recent works bridging the crucial knowledge gap in protein adsorption will be highlighted.New findings of intri
