Effects of TiC on the microstructure refinement and mechanical property enhancement of additive manufactured Inconel 625/TiC metal matrix composites fabricated with novel core-shell composite powder

The flexible product shape of additive manufacturing(AM)is attractive,but the process suffers from a lack of material property diversity due to a limited number of printable alloys and post-processing *** overcome this problem,the AM of metal matrix composites(MMCs)is a highly suitable solution because the properties of MMC can be tailored using various ***,extensive research has been conducted on the AM of MMCs;however,the major huddle for this process has been the difficulties in preparing feedstock powder and operating the AM *** study introduces an easily synthesizable core-shell composite powder,which was fabricated by a recently developed process called the SMART *** core-shell powder has a novel morphology,consisting of a metal core and composite shell,distinguishing it from the powders used in conventional AM *** 625/TiCp composites were fabricated using the core-shell composite powder,with various fractions of TiCp up to 10 vol.%.Compared to additive-manufactured Inconel 625,the additive-manufactured MMCs showed enhanced strength with significantly fewer *** results of this study may accelerate the application of MMC fabricated by AM,which offers superior properties and reliability compared to casting and powder metallurgy due to the higher degree of dislocation density and reinforcement dispersion.

Tidal Forecast for Final Closure of Saemangeum Tidal Dike

The Saemangeum project includes well-developed tidal flats, two estuaries of the Mankyeong and Dongjin rivers, and a chain of small iskands in the outer area off the dike by reclaiming a surface area of 40100 ha. A long sea dike of 30 km has been constructed in the mid-west area of Korea. This paper describes the construction of tidal dikes focusing on the final closure operation performed in April, 2006 employing intermediate technology. Predictive modelling was also carried out to predict the real-time flow fields during the gradual closure operation of the final stage.

In this study, we investigated the effects of streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes on antioxi- dant-like protein-1 immunoreactivity, protein carbonyl levels, and malondialdehyde formation, a marker for lipid peroxidation, in the hippocampus. For this study, streptozotocin （75 mg/kg） was intraperitoneally injected into adult rats to induce type 1 diabetes. The three experimental pa- rameters were determined at 2, 3, 4 weeks after streptozotocin treatment. Fasting blood glucose levels significantly increased by 20.7-21.9 mM after streptozotocin treatment. The number of antioxidant-like protein-1 immunoreactive neurons significantly decreased in the hippocampal CA1 region, but not the dentate gyrus, 3 weeks after streptozotocin treatment compared to the control group. Malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl levels, which are modified by oxidative stress, significantly increased with a peak at 3 weeks after malondialdehyde treatment, and then decreased 4 weeks after malondialdehyde treatment. These results suggest that neurons in the hippocampal CA1 region, but not the dentate gyrus, are susceptible to oxidative stress 3 weeks after malondialdehyde treatment.

Entacapone,a catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitor,can strengthen the therapeutic effects of levodopa on the treatment of Parkinson’s ***,few studies are reported on whether entacapone can affect hippocampal neurogenesis in *** investigate the effects of entacapone,a modulator of dopamine,on proliferating cells and immature neurons in the mouse hippocampal dentate gyrus,60 mice(7 weeks old)were randomly divided into a vehicle-treated group and the groups treated with 10,50,or 200 mg/kg *** results showed that 50 and 200 mg/kg entacapone increased the exploration time for novel object *** staining results revealed that after entacapone treatment,the numbers of Ki67-positive proliferating cells,doublecortin-positive immature neurons,and phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein(pCREB)-positive cells were significantly *** blot analysis results revealed that treatment with tyrosine kinase receptor B(TrkB)receptor antagonist significantly decreased the exploration time for novel object recognition and inhibited the expression of phosphorylated TrkB and brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).Entacapone treatment antagonized the effects of TrkB receptor *** results suggest that entacapone treatment promoted hippocampal neurogenesis and improved memory function through activating the BDNF-TrkB-pCREB *** study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of Seoul National University(approval ***-130730-1)on February 24,2014.

Internal modification in transparent hybrid germanium-silica plates using plasma formation induced by a femtosecond laser

The fabrication of an internal diffraction grating with photoinduced refractive index modification in planar hybrid germanium-silica plates was demonstrated using low-density plasma formation excited by a high-intensity femtosecond (150 fs) Ti:sapphire laser (λp=790 nm).The refractive index modifications with diameters ranging from 400 nm to 3 μm were photoinduced after plasma formation occurred upon irradiation with peak intensities of more than 2×1013 W/*** graded refractive index profile was fabricated to be a symmetric around from the center of the point at which low-density plasma occurred.

New strategy for reversal tolerant anode for automotive polymer electrolyte fuel cell

Since the commercialization of the fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell system has been actively improved as a powertrain for ultimate environment-friendly vehicle. During the FCEV operation, various transient conditions such as start-up/shut-down and fuel starvation occur irregularly, which deteriorates the durability of the membrane electrode assembly. In particular, when fuel starvation occurs, the carbon support in the anode is oxidized within few minutes, thus the mitigation of this phenomenon is essential for securing the durability. This short review introduces the concept of reversal tolerant anode (RTA), which is a mitigation method using an oxygen evolution catalyst and reviews some previous reports. In addition, new approach for RTA suggested by authors recently, which is the replacement of Pt anode catalyst by multifunctional IrRu alloy catalyst that simultaneously exhibits the activities for the hydrogen oxidation reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction is introduced.

Background: Electroacupuncture(EA) may reduce the severity of acute pancreatitis(AP) and provide additional pain relief in patients with chronic pancreatitis. however, the ability of EA to relieve pain in patients with AP has not been well ***: This study was undertaken to compare the pain-relieving effects of EA and conventional treatment in patients with ***, setting, participants and interventions: This study was conducted using a randomized, controlled,three-arm, parallel-group and multi-center design. Patients diagnosed with AP were randomly and equally assigned to EA1, EA2 or control groups. All participants received conventional standard-of-care therapy for AP. Local EA alone was administered in EA1, and local plus distal EA was given in *** EA included two abdominal acupoints, while distal EA included twelve peripheral acupoints. EA groups underwent one session of EA daily for 4 days(days 1–4), or until pain was resolved or *** outcome measures: The primary outcome measure was the change in the visual analogue scale(VAS;0–100) pain score between baseline and day ***: Eighty-nine participants were randomized into EA1, EA2 and control groups, and 88(EA1, 30;EA2, 29;control, 29) were included in the full-analysis set. VAS score change(median [interquartile range]) on day 5 was(12.3 ± 22.5) in the EA1 group,(10.3 ± 21.5) in the EA2 group, and(8.9 ± 15.2) in the control group. There were not significant differences in the change in VAS score among treatments(P = 0.983). however, time to food intake was significantly shorter in the EA group(EA1 + EA2) than in the control group(median 2.0 days vs 3.0 days), with a hazard ratio of 0.581(P = 0.022;95% CI,0.366–0.924). No significant adverse events ***: EA treatment did not significantly reduce pain after 4 days of treatment in patients with AP-associated abdominal pain but significantly reduced time to first food intake.

A Simple Method for Grain Refinement of Pure Aluminium

In order to produce the fully equiaxed and fine grained pure Al, a simple casting process that used cooling slope was examined and compared with conventional casting process under same casting conditions. By using cooling slope, grains over the whole section of castings were suddenly refined and ability of grain refinement kept up at very high mold temperature up to 550癈 in examined casting conditions.

Quality of life for primary caregivers of muscular dystrophy patients in South Korea

Background Although some studies measured the burden of caregivers and the factors that influenced their feelings of burden, few studies have measured the quality of life （QOL） for primary caregivers of patients with muscular dystrophy （MD）. We assessed the QOL for primary caregivers of patients with MD in South Korea and identified factors associated with caregivers＇ QOL. Methods Ninety dyads of patients with MD and their primary caregivers were enrolled in this study. The QOL of caregivers of patients with MD was assessed subjectively using the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment, Life Brief Form. Caregivers＇ emotional status was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory （BDI） and family function level was evaluated using the Family APGAR scale. Patients reported their emotional status using the BDI or the Children＇s Depression Inventory. The functional levels of patients were evaluated by the modified Barthel Index. Results Caregivers＇ QOL was statistically associated with family income, family function, emotional status of patients, level of education, and emotional status of caregivers （P 〈0.05）. Caregivers who were employed had a significantly higher QOL than those who were not （P 〈0.05）. In multiple regression analyses, emotional and employment status of caregivers was strongly associated with caregivers＇ QOL. Conclusion Rehabilitation teams should consider not only the physical factors of patients but also the psychological and demographic factors of primary caregivers of patients with MD.
