THE DISTRIBUTION AND EcOLOGIcAL-BIOLOGIcAL FEATURES OF cREPIDULA ONYX IN HONG KONG

c. onyx, originally distributed in california, was found in great quantities in Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong in 1982 and was identified according to the study of its morphology and the radula teeth. Lots of the individuals of the species lived in overlapping colony, with the female at the lower, and the male in the upper while the sex-transforming individual at the middle. They attached on the shells of Perna viridis in a high density of 715 ind./m2. Studies have been carried out on its population structure, individual size, age and sex composition and on reproductive biology, such as sex transformation, change of the length of penis and fecundity.

Background: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by variable combinations of parkinsonism, autonomic failure, cerebellar ataxia and pyramidal features. Although the distribution of synucleinopathy correlates with the predominant clinical features, the burden of pathology does not fully explain observed differences in clinical presentation and rate of disease progression. We hypothesized that the clinical heterogeneity in MSA is a consequence of variability in the seeding activity of α-synuclein both between different patients and between different brain regions. Methods: The reliable detection of α-synuclein seeding activity derived from MSA using cell-free amplification assays remains challenging. Therefore, we conducted a systematic evaluation of 168 different reaction buffers, using an array of pH and salts, seeded with fully characterized brain homogenates from one MSA and one PD patient. We then validated the two conditions that conferred the optimal ability to discriminate between PD- and MSA-derived samples in a larger cohort of 40 neuropathologically confirmed cases, including 15 MSA. Finally, in a subset of brains, we conducted the first multi-region analysis of seeding behaviour in MSA. Results: Using our novel buffer conditions, we show that the physicochemical factors that govern the in vitro amplification of α-synuclein can be tailored to generate strain-specific reaction buffers that can be used to reliably study the seeding capacity from MSA-derived α-synuclein. Using this novel approach, we were able to sub-categorize the 15 MSA brains into 3 groups: high, intermediate and low seeders. To further demonstrate heterogeneity in α-synuclein seeding in MSA, we conducted a comprehensive multi-regional evaluation of α-synuclein seeding in 13 different regions from 2 high seeders, 2 intermediate seeders and 2 low seeders. conclusions: We have identified unexpected differences in seed-competent α-synuclein across a coho

Zircon geochronology reveals polyphase magmatism and crustal anatexis in the Buchan Block,NE Scotland:Implications for the Grampian Orogeny

The type locality for high-temperature,low-pressure regional metamorphism,the Buchan Block in NE Scotland,exhibits profound differences to the rest of the Grampian *** differences have led some to regard the Buchan Block as an exotic crustal fragment comprising Precambrian basement gneisses and cover rocks thrust into their current position during Grampian *** rocks of the Buchan Block are now generally correlated with Dalradian strata elsewhere,the origin of the gneisses and the cause of the high heat flow and associated magmatism is *** report SIMS U-Pb and LA-IcPMS Hf isotopic data in zircon from high-grade rocks from the northeast(Inzie Head Gneiss)and northwest(Portsoy)corners of the Buchan *** Inzie Head,upper amphibolite to granulite facies metasedimentary gneisses coexist with diorite sheets that were emplaced contemporaneously with partial melting of their host rocks,at least locally.U-Pb geochronology indicates a crystallisation age for the diorite of 486±9 ***-deformed diorites within the Portsoy Gabbro have a crystallisation age of 493±8 *** of ca.490 Ma for magmatism and high-grade metamorphism,which are broadly contemporaneous with ophiolite obduction and the onset of orogenesis,are significantly older than the established peak of Grampian metamorphism(ca.470 Ma).We propose a new model for the Grampian Orogeny involving punctuated tectonothermal activity due to tectonic switching during accretionary *** of a NW-dipping subduction zone at ca.490 Ma produced a back-arc environment(the Buchan Block)with associated arc magmatism and high dT/dP *** of an outboard arc resulted in shortening(the initial phase of the Grampian Orogeny)at ca.488 *** of a NW-dipping subduction zone to the SE of the ca.488 Ma suture began at 473 Ma and led to lithospheric-scale extension,decompression melting and advective heating of the middle crust,producing the widespread ca.470 Ma Gram

Objective: This study was undertaken to determine the pregnancy rate after transfer of cryopreserved blastocysts. Study design: Retrospective review of 61 patients from January 1, 2002, to December 31, 2003, who were transferred with blastocyst embryos cryopreserved on day 5 or 6 after culture in a sequential media. The cryopreserved blastocysts were thawed by using a 7- step dilution process after rapid thawing half hour to 2 hours before embryo transfer. Results: The pregnancy rate after transfer of 61 patients with cryopreserved blastocysts was 66% , with 49% having cardiac activity. The pregnancy rate after transfer of 3 blastocysts was 71% and after transfer of 2 blastocysts was 66% . The pregnancy rate of blastocysts cryopreserved after intracytoplasmic sperm injection was 56% . conclusion: cryopreservation and transfer of blastocysts appears to be a reliable procedure, and that the human blastocyst can be cryopreserved and thawed without a significant loss of viability.
