Iron(Fe)and phosphate(Pi)are two essential nutrients for plant growth.Both impact plant development differently and their respective deficiency leads to multiple physiological disorders,resulting in severe reduction of crop production.The chemistry of these two elements is deeply inter-connected,as in the soil phosphate naturally associates to ferric oxides(resulting from aerobic conditions observed in most cultivated soils)to create insoluble complexes that can no longer be taken up by the plants'import systems.

Inorganic phosphate(Pi)is the sole source of phosphorus for plants.It is estimated that Pi is a limiting factor for crop growth and yield in one-third of cultivated soils worldwide.Problems of Pi nutrition may be explained by different factors.First of all,Pi has very low mobility in soils leading to the retrieval of the majority of the Pi fertilizers applied to be recovered by microorganisms at the expense of the crops.Secondly,it forms insoluble complexes with clays or many soil cations reducing its bioavailability.

The evolution of terminology in a given field of science and technology is a good indicator of the context in which inventions originated and how concepts have evolved.This is the case of photogrammetry,remote sensing and related methods,whose terminology evolved,first under the influence of the early inventors Laussedat and Meydenbauer,in French and German,respectively,and then in English and other languages as an international professional community developed.The development of space remote sensing and analytical photogrammetry led to the modification of old concepts and the renewal of terminology,and more recently,the advent of digital photography has blurred the boundaries between different fields and the meaning of the terms.This article proposes an analysis of the evolution of technical terms through the Google Ngram Viewer tool,which allows the visualization of the occurrence of terms in documents accessible on the web.Despite its biases,this tool allows an interpretation of the evolution of the terminology over a long period of time,as well as a comparison of the evolution observed in the different languages.In particular,it makes it possible to highlight the periods when these methods were very popular,as well as a recent decline in the use of classical terms such as photogrammetry and remote sensing in favor of a new vocabulary,due to the blurring of boundaries between disciplines and to the emergence of new solutions related to UAVs,computer vision,etc.,which have renewed the potential of classical methods.

Assessing the predictive capabilities of precipitation strengthening models for deformation twinning in Mg alloys using phase-field simulations

Precipitation strengthening is a key strategy for improving the overall mechanical properties of Mg alloys. In Mg-Al alloys, basal precipitates are known to strengthen against twinning, resulting in an increase in the critical resolved shear stress(CRSS) necessary for continued deformation. Although several models have been proposed to quantify the influence of precipitate shape, size, and distribution on the CRSS, the accuracy, scope, and applicability of these models has not been fully assessed. Accordingly, the objectives of this study are:(i)to analyze the accuracy of analytical models proposed in the literature for precipitation strengthening against twin thickening and propagation(in Mg-Al alloys) using phase-field(PF) simulations,(ii) to propose modifications to these model forms to better capture the observed trends in the PF data, and(iii) to subsequently test the predictiveness of the extended models in extrapolating to experimental strengthening data.First, using an atomistically-informed phase-field method, the interactions between migrating twin boundaries(during the propagation and thickening stages) and basal plates are simulated for different precipitate sizes and arrangements. In general, comparison of the increase in CRSS determined from the PF simulations and the predictions from four precipitation strengthening models reveals that modifications are necessary to the model forms to extend their applicability to precipitation strengthening against both twin thickening and propagation. A subsequent comparison between predictions from the extended models and experimental strengthening data for peak age-hardened samples reveals that the(extended) single dislocation and dislocation wall models provide reasonably accurate values of the increase in CRSS.Ultimately, the results presented here help elucidate the fidelity and applicability of the various hardening models in predicting precipitation strenghtening effects in technologically important alloys.

This survey aims at briefly summarising key findings of the recent literature dealing with politics and banking.The interplay between banks and politics has received increasing interest in recent years following Dinc(2005)on the influence of elections on bank lending.It focusses on two questions:the influence of elections on bank behaviour,and the interconnections between democracy and banking.Two key findings emerge from the litera-ture.First,elections exert an influence on the banking industry.They affect bank lending and bank failures,with electoral cycles leading to economic costs.Second,democracy has a beneficial impact on the credit conditions of firms.This work provides a roadmap for future research to investigate the political interfer-ence in private banks’behaviour and in developed countries.

In this work, blast disruption and mitigation using 3D grids/perforated plates were tested for underbelly and side protection of vehicles. Two vehicle simulants were used: a small-scale one for side vehicle protection assessment and a true-to-scale simulant for underbelly protection testing. The deformation of target plates was assessed. These were either unprotected or protected by three different types of disruptors. The first disruptor was made of a sandwich structure of two perforated plates filled with a thin aluminum structure allowing the air to pass through. The two other disruptors were made of pieces of cast metallic foam. Two different kinds of foams were used: one with large cells and the second one with small cells. Beforehand, the mitigation efficiency of the disruptors was evaluated using an explosivedriven shock tube(EDST). The experiments showed that blast disruption/mitigation by 3D grid/perforated plate structures was not suitable for vehicle side protection. However, 3D grids/perforated structures proved to be relatively effective for underbelly protection compared to an equivalent mass of steel.

Viruses still pose a significant threat to human and animal health worldwide.In the fight against viral infections,high-purity viral stocks are needed for manufacture of safer vaccines.It is also a priority to ensure the viral safety of biopharmaceuticals such as blood products.Chromatography techniques are widely implemented at both academic and industrial levels in the purification of viral particles,whole viruses and virus-like particles to remove viral contaminants from biopharmaceutical products.This paper focuses on polysaccharide adsorbents,particulate resins and membrane adsorbers,used in virus purification/removal chromatography processes.Different chromatographic modes are surveyed,with particular attention to ion exchange and affinity/pseudo-affinity adsorbents among which commercially available agarose-based resins(Sepharose®)and cellulose-based membrane adsorbers(Sartobind®)occupy a dominant position.Mainly built on the development of new ligands coupled to conventional agarose/cellulose matrices,the development perspectives of polysaccharide-based chromatography media in this antiviral area are stressed in the conclusive part.
