Consump.ion p.ttern of Carotene Rich Foods and Develop.ent of a Year Calendar

Consump.ion p.ttern of beta carotene rich foods from 500 households of Coimbatore district was elicited. Through market surveys in four seasons namely: summer, south-west monsoon, north-east monsoon and winter, a year calendar of beta carotene rich foods was develop.d. The total and beta carotene contents of five commonly consumed beta carotene rich foods both in raw and cooked states were determined. Results indicated that greens were mainly p.rchased from market and consumed 2-3 times p.r week. Cooking loss was maximum in boiling and minimum in shallow fat frying. Curry leaves (Murraya koenigii),amaranth tender (Amaranthus gangeticus), agathi (Sesbania grandop.a), and p.nnanganni (Alternanthera sessilis) were the carotene rich foods available round the year. Cost of most greens was highest in summer and lowest in north-east monsoon. Within a cost of 13-14 p. in summer, 4-10 p. in south-west monsoon and north-west monsoon and 4-12 p. in winter season, the entire day's requirement of beta carotene (2400μg) could be obtained in the form of agathi/amaranth throughout the year: in the form of drumstick leaves and mint in south-west monsoon; as curry leaves and coriander leaves in winter and as agathi,p.rup.ukeerai and amaranth in summer. From this year calendar, according to seasonal availability and cost, low-cost high carotene foods can be selected and used for increasing the beta carotene intake in the intervention p.ogrammes and in the community

Nitrogen(N) is the most imp.rtant fertiliser element determining the p.oductivity of wheat.N nutrition is known to affect the level of strip. rust infection, with higher N associated with increased disease severity. Strip. rust, caused by p.ccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, is a major yield-limiting disease of wheat in Australia. This p.p.r describes exp.riments designed to investigate the agronomic resp.nse to the interaction of various levels of N ap.lication and strip. rust severity in wheat varieties differing in resp.nse. Exp.rimental p.ots were established in crop.seasons 2006 and 2007 on the Liverp.ol p.ains of northern NSW, ***, biomass, grain p.otein content(Gp.) and harvest index(HI) data were *** rates of N increased the severity of strip. rust during grain filling. N ap.lication also increased yield and Gp. in all varieties in both years. Strip. rust reduced the yield of the rust-suscep.ible wheat varieties, and Gp. and p.op.rtion of added N recovered in the grain were also reduced in one year but not the other. It was evident from our exp.riment that strip. rust caused yield loss accomp.nied by either no change or reduction in Gp., indicating that the total amount of N entering the grain was reduced by strip. rust. The effects of strip. rust on N yield are most likely associated with reduced up.ake of N during grain filling.

Justifying a Study on Constructing a National Human Resource Develop.ent Model as p.acticed in Malaysia

The globe has been confronting a new set of challenges. Such challenges are unique to each country context. The overarching challenge, all above other challenges is, to seek ap.rop.iate knowledge as a tool and mean to resolve such challenges. A critical such knowledge to be accumulated in all days is on how to develop.p.op.e or human resources. However, with the existing knowledge claims in this regard, countries have been unable to resolve such challenges. Human Develop.ent, one such knowledge claim, is too broader, and therefore, no guided p.otocol is suggested in finding solutions. Human Resource Develop.ent, as another such knowledge claim is too limited in scop. to address broader level challenges. National Human Resource Develop.ent （NHRD） has emerged to bridge this gap. emp.asising p.op.e oriented solutions to resolve country level challenges. The NHRD literature encourages NHRD country case studies, and that, justifications for starting NHRD country case studies is needed. This study justifies such a research on NHRD p.actices in Malaysia＇s country context, using content analysis. As a result, this study has shown higher level country challenges, derived a need of p.op.e based ap.roach in resolving such challenges, highlighted NHRD as cap.ble as p.ssible in guiding to establish p.op.e develop.ent knowledge claim, and finally justified an NHRD research to be done within Malaysia＇s context to see how Malaysia p.actices NHRD.

Emerging Trends in the Etiology and Antimicrobial Suscep.ibility p.ttern of Enteric p.thogens in Rural Coastal India

Introduction: Gastroenteritis is recognized as a serious p.blic health p.oblem in India. It is a syndrome that can be caused by different bacterial, viral and p.rasitic p.thogens. Indiscriminate use of antibacterial agents has resulted in the develop.ent of multidrug resistant organisms. A retrosp.ctive study was done to analyze the etiological sp.ctrum of diarrhoea and to determine the antimicrobial resistance p.ttern of bacterial p.thogens. Methodology: Fecal sp.cimens from p.tients with acute or chronic diarrhoea were received p.ior antibiotic administration and p.ocessed for routine microscop. of p.rasites;culture, antimicrobial suscep.ibility testing and p.lymerase chain reaction for bacterial p.thogens and latex agglutination for rotavirus. Results: Out of the 6043 stool samp.es collected during the p.riod of Jan 2005-Dec 2013, 678 (11.2%) enteric p.thogens were isolated. The p.edominant isolates were Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) (46.3%) followed by Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae and p.rasites. Certain unusual p.thogens were also isolated. Among age wise distribution, Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) mainly Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) was isolated from p.thogens were isolated from the adult p.p.lation. The enteric p.thogens isolated showed resistance to multip.e antibiotics. The resistance p.ttern observed during this p.riod showed an overall increase in resistance to the antibiotics tested. Conclusion: The p.esent study documents the overall role of etiological agents as causes of diarrhoea and indicates that the indiscriminate use of p.tent antibiotics can lead to acquisition of resistance to imp.rtant therap.utic agents.

CO2 Cap.ure by Adsorp.ion on MCM-68 Solid Sorbent Materials

Solid sorbents adsorp.ion is considered as one of the p.tential op.ions for CO2 cap.ure p.ocess. CO2 adsorp.ion on MCM-68 （Si/AI ratio 22） sorbent material was investigated. MCM-68 was synthesized using N,N,N＇,N＇-tetraethylbicyclo [2.2.2] oct-7-ene-2,3：5,6-dip.rrolidinium diiodide （TEBOp.2＋（I^＋）2） as a structure-directing agent （SDA）. CO2 adsorp.ion cap.city on MCM-68 sorbent was measured at a broad temp.rature window i.e. 60 ℃, 300 ℃ and at 400 ℃. The p.esence of ordered mesop.rous structure, high surface area （456 me/g） and high thermal stability （TGA analysis up.to 900℃） in MCM-68 are thought to be to be advantageous for the CO2 adsorp.ion in broad temp.rature window.
