Interface regulation strategy of Al-CNTs composite induced by Al-Si eutectic reaction and its strengthening mechanism

Carbon nanotubes(CNTs)reinforced aluminum matrix composites(AMCs)show broad application prospects in the fields of aerospace and transportation because of their lightweight,high specific strength and specific modulus.A new alloying strategy in this study is proposed to regulate its weak intrinsic interface and uncontrollable interfacial *** results show that Si element could hinder the dissolution and diffusion of carbon atoms in Al matrix,inhibiting Al-CNTs interface *** refinement and dislocation increment induced by the reinforcements promote the contributions to the strength of *** wettability and interface bonding of Al-CNTs could be effectively improved by Al/Si/CNTs composite interface,the formed discontinuous strong interface is advantageous to coordinate the plastic deformation of *** particles can also firmly fix CNTs through pinning effect during deformation,which leads to a better load ***,the tensile strength of Al-5Si-0.5CNTs composite can be enhanced up to 391 MPa while maintaining an acceptable plasticity of 7.5%.It brings the strengthening effect of CNTs into full play in AMCs and achieves the strengthening effect of 1+1>2 under the comprehensive effect of grain refinement strengthening,dislocation strengthening,dispersion strengthening of Si particles and load transfer to CNTs。

Bio-inspired untethered fully soft robots in liquid actuated by induced energy gradients

Soft robotics with new designs, fabrication technologies and control strategies inspired by nature have been totally changing our view on *** fully exploit their potential in practical applications, untethered designs are preferred in ***, hindered by the limited thermal/mechanical performance of soft materials, it has been always challenging for researchers to implement untethered solutions, which generally involve rigid forms of high energy-density power sources or high energy-density processes.A number of insects in nature, such as rove beetles, can gain a burst of kinetic energy from the induced surface-energy gradient on water to return to their familiar habitats, which is generally known as Marangoni *** by such a behavior, we report the agile untethered mobility of a fully soft robot in liquid based on induced energy gradients and also develop corresponding fabrication and maneuvering *** robot can reach a speed of 5.5 body lengths per second, which is 7-fold more than the best reported, 0.69(body length per second), in the previous work on untethered soft robots in liquid by *** controlling the robots, we demonstrate a soft-robot swarm that can approach a target simultaneously to assure a hit with high *** employing any high energy-density power sources or processes, our robot exhibits many attractive merits, such as quietness, no mechanical wear, no thermal fatigue, invisibility and ease of robot fabrication, which may potentially impact many fields in the future.

iTRAQ quantitative analysis of plasma proteome changes of cow from pregnancy to lactation

Dairy cows undergo tremendous changes in physiological, metabolism and the immune function from pregnancy to lac- tation that are associated with cows being susceptible to metabolic and infectious diseases. The objective of this study is to investigate the changes of plasma proteome on 21 d before expected calving and 1 d after calving from dairy cows using an integrated proteomic approach consisting of minor abundance protein enrichment by ProteoMiner beads, protein labeling by isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification, and protein identification by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Nineteen proteins were changed around the time of calving. These proteins were asso- ciated with response to stress, including acute-phase response and defense response, based on the proteins annotation. In particular, three up-regulated proteins after calving including factor V, a2-antiplasmin and prothrombin were assigned into the complement and coagulation pathway. These results may provide new information in elucidating host response to lactation and parturition stress, and inflammatory-like conditions at the protein level. Differential proteins may serve as potential markers to regulate the lactation and parturition stress in periparturient dairy cows.

Efficient wireless multicast retransmission using network coding

In wireless multicast, network coding has recently attracted attentions as a substantial improvement to packet retransmission schemes. However, the problem of finding the optimal network code which minimizes the retransmissions is hard to solve or approximate. This paper presents two schemes to reduce the number of retransmissions for reliable multicast efficiently. One is retransmission using network coding based on improved Vandermonde matrix （VRNC）, the other is retransmission using network coding based on adaptive improved Vandermonde matrix （AVRNC）. Using VRNC scheme the sender selects the packets all receivers have lost and encodes them with improved Vandermonde matrix; when receivers receive enough encoded retransmission packets, all the lost packets can be recovered. With AVRNC scheme, the sender can obtain the recovery information from all the receivers after sending out per retransmission packet, and then the improved Vandermonde matrix can be updated, thus reducing the complexity of encoding and decoding. Our proposed schemes can achieve the theoretical lower bound assuming retransmission packets lossless, and approach the theoretical lower bound considering retransmission packets loss. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can efficiently reduce the number ofretransmissions, thus improving transmission efficiency.

Responses of Detoxifying, Antioxidant and Digestive Enzyme Activities to Host Shift of Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)

The polyphagous B-biotype of Bemisia tabaci （Gennadius） has demonstrated a high capacity to adapt to numerous hosts from diverse plant families. To illustrate induced responses by the host plant, biochemical research on eight plant-insect interaction correlative enzymes, representing detoxifying, antioxidant and digestive pathways, were investigated. Transferring whitefly adults to Zhongmian 23 from the pre-adapted host Zhongmian 41 induced activities of carboxylesterase （by 1.80-fold）, glutathione S-transferase （by 3.79-fold）, proteinase （by 1.62-fold） and amylase （by 2.41-fold） activities, hut decreased polyphenol oxidase （by 1.89-fold） and peroxidase （by 1.88-fold）. However, transferring whitefly adults to the favorite host abutilon from Zhongmian 41 was associated with increased activities of cytochrome P450 monooxygenase （by 1.61-fold） and amylase （by 1.42-fold）, and decreased activities of polyphenol oxidase （by 2.96-fold） and peroxidase （by 2.07-fold）. Our results, together with previous studies, proved that multiple pathways are involved in coping with host shifts by polyphagous herbivores, and the taxonomic status and preference of the host transferred would affect which pathway would be induced. These results would represent a key challenge in developing long-term sustainable insect control strategies.

Dear Editor,Chemotherapy is one of major means for cancer treatments, and many of chemotherapeutic drugs are DNA damaging agents that reduce tumor growth through triggering cancer cell apoptosis or necrosis. Following DNA damage, ataxia telangiectasia mutated （ATM）, a protein kinase, was acti- vated and a cytosolic complex containing ATM, NEMO, RIP1 were formed （Biton and Ashkenazi, 2011）.

The exploration and utilization of functional substances in edible insects: a review

Edible insects as food have been considered as a core future protein source. Not only are edible insects abundant in nutrient value, but also have numbers of functional substances, which could provide a multiple valuable benefits for humans. This review examines and summarizes the functional substances in edible insects and their special effects for people, as well as the use and prospects for these functional substances. There are many functional substances in edible insects, such as antimicrobial peptides, interferon, sex attractant hormones, cordycepin, active polysaccharides, microelement, chitin/chitosan, steroidal material, vitamin, lecithin, etc., which could provide multiple benefits for human beings. These special functional substances could help people enhance immunity, inhibit tumor, regulate intestinal function, relieve fatigue, anti oxidation, protect against colds, improve sleeping, promote the growth and development, as well as reducing blood sugar and blood pressure, among others. According to these valuable efficacies, the functional substances extracted from edible insects can be exploited mainly in three ways: edible insects are used to discover new medicines or health care products for people;and edible insects are applied in chemical, agricultural, food technology, pollutant treatment and textile sectors;as well as being consumed as animal feedstuff for livestock and other animals, which indirectly meet the different requirements for humans. Currently, edible insects have generated global interest to be developed as different forms of products and has promoted more research and development. However, pupae and larvae are still the main consumption ways in the market, which is unacceptable to most people. It is expected that the edible insect industry would be prosperous and sustainable by integrating the power of beneficial policies and regulations, huge consumer demand and proper strategies of promotion and production.

Connexin 40-formed GJIC increases the phototoxicity of photodynamic therapy through ROS-and calcium-mediated pathways

OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of connexin(Cx)40-formed gap junctional intercellular communication(GJIC)on Photofrin-photodynamic therapy(PDT)phototoxicity in Cx40-transfected He La cells and its potential *** He La cell line stably transfected to express Cx40 was seeded at high and low cell density,respectively,to assess in vitro photosensitivity using CCK8 *** blot assay was performed to detect the expression of *** intracellular ROS and Ca^(2+) concentrations were determined using flow cytometer.4-HNE and ceramide were measured using ELISA *** Cx40-composed GJ formation at high density enhances the phototoxicity of *** the Cx40 is not expressed or Cx40 channels are blocked,the phototoxicity in high-density cultures substantially reduces,indicating that the enhanced PDT phototoxicity at high density is mediated by Cx40-composed *** GJIC-mediated increase in PDT phototoxicity was associated with ROS and calcium-mediated stress signaling *** The work uniquely presents the ability of Cx40-composed GJIC to enhance the sensitivity of malignant cells to PDT,and indicates that maintenance or increase of Cx40-formed GJIC may be a profitable strategy towards the enhancement of PDT therapeutic efficiency.

Microsatellite polymorphisms of Sichuan golden monkeys

Previous study using protein electrophoresis shows no polymorphism in 44 nuclear loci of Sichuan golden monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana), which limits our understandings of its population genetic patterns in the nuclear genome. In order to obtain sufficient information, we scanned 14 microsatellite loci in a sample of 32 individuals from its three major habitats (Minshan, Qinling and Shen-nongjia). A considerable amount of polymorphisms were detected. The average heterozygosities in the local populations were all above 0.5. The differentiations among local populations were significant. There was evidence of geneflow among subpopulations, but geneflow between Qinling and Shennongjia local populations was the weakest. Minshan and Qinling populations might have gone through recent bottlenecks. The estimation of the ratio of the effective population sizes among local populations was close to that from census sizes. Comparisons to available mitochondria data suggested that R. roxellana’s social structures played an important role in shaping its population genetic patterns. Our study showed that the polymorphism level of R. roxellana was no higher than other endangered species; therefore, measures should be taken to preserve genetic diversity of this species.
