In the Chinese national nutrition surveys, fortified foods were not investigated separately from the base diet, and the contribution of fortified foods to micronutrients intake is not very clear. This study investigated the diet, including fortified foods and food supplements, of urban pregnant women and analyzed the intake of calcium, iron,and zinc to assess the corresponding contributions of fortified foods, food supplements, and the base diet. The results demonstrated that the base diet was the major source of calcium, iron, and zinc, and was recommended to be the first choice for micronutrients intake. Furthermore, consumption of fortified foods and food supplements offered effective approaches to improve the dietary intake of calcium, iron, and zinc in Chinese urban pregnant women.

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome(CP/CPPS),also known as National Institutes of Health(NIH)type Ⅲ prostatitis,is a common disorder with an unclear etiology and no known curative treatments.Based on the presence or absence of leukocytes in expressed prostatic secretion(EPS),CP/CPPS is classifiedfurther into Illa(inflammatory)and Illb(noninflammatory)subtypes.However,the severity of symptoms is not entirely consistent with the white blood cell(WBC)count.Following the preliminary finding of a link between inflammatory cytokines and CP/CPPS,we performed this clinical study with the aim of identifying cytokines that are differentially expressed according to whether the prostatitis subtype is Ⅲa or Ⅲb.We found that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor(G-CSF),interleukin-18(IL-18),and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1)levels were significantly elevated and interferon-inducible protein-10(IP-10)and platelet-derived growth factor-BB(PDGF-BB)levels were downregulated in the EPS of patients with type Ⅲa prostatitis.In a word,it is a meaningful study in which we investigate the levels of various cytokines in EPS according to whether prostatitis is the Ⅲa or Ⅲb subtype.The combination of G-CSF,IL-18,MCP-1,IP-10,and PDGF-BB expression levels could form a basis for classification,diagnosis,and therapeutic targets in clinical P/CPPS.

Most viruses and transposons serve as effective carriers for the introduction of foreign DNA up to 11 kb into vertebrate genomes.However,their activity markedly diminishes with payloads exceeding 11 kb.Expanding the payload capacity of transposons could facilitate more sophisticated cargo designs,improving the regulation of expression and minimizing mutagenic risks associated with molecular therapeutics,metabolic engineering,and transgenic animal production.In this study,we improved the Tol2 transposon by increasing protein expression levels using a translational enhancer(QBI SP163,ST)and enhanced the nuclear targeting ability using the nuclear localization protein H2B(SHT).The modified Tol2 and ST transposon efficiently integrated large DNA cargos into human cell cultures(H1299),comparable to the well-established super PiggyBac system.Furthermore,mRNA from ST and SHT showed a significant increase in transgene delivery efficiency of large DNA payloads(8 kb,14 kb,and 24 kb)into zebrafish(Danio rerio).This study presents a modified Tol2 transposon as an enhanced nonviral vector for the delivery of large DNA payloads in transgenic applications.

Conformable and wire-less charging energy storage devices play important roles in enabling the fast development of wearable,non-contact soft electronics.However,current wire-less charging power sources are still restricted by limited flexural angles and fragile connection of components,resulting in the failure expression of performance and constraining their fur-ther applications in health monitoring wearables and moveable artificial limbs.Herein,we present an ultracompatible skin-like integrated wireless charging micro-supercapacitor,which building blocks(including electrolyte,electrode and substrate)are all evaporated by liquid precursor.Owing to the infiltration and permeation of the liquid,each part of the integrated device attached firmly with each other,forming a compact and all-in-one configuration.In addition,benefitting from the controllable volume of electrode solution precursor,the electrode thickness is easily regulated varying from 11.7 to 112.5μm.This prepared thin IWC-MSC skin can fit well with curving human body,and could be wireless charged to store electricity into high capacitive micro-supercapacitors(11.39 F cm-3)of the integrated device.We believe this work will shed light on the construction of skin-attachable electronics and irregular sensing microrobots.

ransforming growth factor(TGF)-βis a multifunctional cytokine expressed by almost every tissue and cell type.The signal transduction of TGF-βcan stimulate diverse cellular responses and is particularly critical to embryonic development,wound healing,tissue homeostasis,and immune homeostasis in health.The dysfunction of TGF-βcan play key roles in many diseases,and numerous targeted therapies have been developed to rectify its pathogenic activity.In the past decades,a large number of studies on TGF-βsignaling have been carried out,covering a broad spectrum of topics in health,disease,and therapeutics.Thus,a comprehensive overview of TGF-βsignaling is required for a general picture of the studies in this field.In this review,we retrace the research history of TGF-βand introduce the molecular mechanisms regarding its biosynthesis,activation,and signal transduction.We also provide deep insights into the functions of TGF-βsignaling in physiological conditions as well as in pathological processes.TGF-β-targeting therapies which have brought fresh hope to the treatment of relevant diseases are highlighted.Through the summary of previous knowledge and recent updates,this review aims to provide a systematic understanding of TGF-βsignaling and to attract more attention and interest to this research area.

Eremurus was described at the beginning of the 19th century.However,due to limited sampling and the small number of gene markers to date,its phylogeny and evolution are largely unknown.In this study,we analyzed plastomes from 27 species belonging to 2 subgenera and 3 sections of Eremurus,which are found in Central Asia(its center of diversity)and China.We also analyzed nuclear DNA ITS of 33 species,encompassing all subgenera and sections of the genus in Central Asia,southwest Asia and China.Our findings revealed that the genus was monophyletic,although both subgenera Eremurus and Henningia were found to be paraphyletic.Both plastome and nrDNA-based phylogenetic trees had three clades that did not reflect the current taxonomy of the genus.Our biogeographical and time-calibrated trees suggest that Eremurus originated in the ancient Tethyan area in the second half of the Eocene.Diversification of Eremurus occurred from the early Oligocene to the late Miocene.Paratethys Sea retreat and several orogenetic events,such as the progressive uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and surrounding mountain belts(Altai,Pamir,Tian Shan),caused serious topographic and climate(aridification)changes in Central Asia that may have triggered a split of clades and speciation.In this transformed Central Asia,speciation proceeded rapidly driven mainly by vicariance caused by numerous mountain chains and specialization to a variety of climatic,topographic and soil conditions that exist in this region.

Internal limiting membrane peeling combined with silicone oil or air tamponade for highly myopic foveoschisis

We reported alpine oak fossil leaves ( the Heterobalanus group, Quercus section Ilex, Fagaceae) rediscovered on Mount Shisha Pangma. According to twice field investigations, the fossil site is located at the front of the No. 5 glacier tongue on the south side of the Dasuopu Glacier at an altitude of about 5800m on the north slope of Shisha Pangma Peak. These fossils are from the siltstone interlayer dominated by sandy conglomerate in the lower part of the Yebokangjiale Group. These newly discovered fossil leaves have typical characteristics of alpine oaks, including oval or oblong leaf, thick and short petiole, entire or toothed leaf margin, and 5 similar to 6 pairs of secondary veins, which is completely consistent with the leaf morphology of alpine oaks from Mount Shisha Pangma reported previously. Through morphological comparison with living and fossil species in this group, as well as quantitative analysis combined with geometric morphometry, these fossil leaves from Mount Shisha Pangma were assigned to Quercus preguajavifolia tao. Alpine oaks may originate in southeastern margin of the Qinghai -Tibetan Plateau, then thrive locally and spread into regions nearby accompanying by the uplift of the plateau. The implication of alpine oak fossil leaves from Mount Shisha Pangma on paleoelevation needs to be further investigated due to the present wide range and the uncertainty of these fossils. The rediscovery of alpine oak fossils from Mount Shisha Pangma not only helps to clarify the specific layers bearing these fossils, but also further enriches the morphological characteristics of this fossil record and its systematic position. This discovery would provide important basis for better revealing the evolution of biodiversity and environmental changes in the middle part of the Himalaya during the Cenozoic.

AIM:To compare the efficacy of pars plana vitrectomy(PPV)combined with internal limiting membrane(ILM)and silicone oil or sterile air tamponade for the treatment of myopic foveoschisis(MF)in highly myopic eyes.METHODS:This retrospective study included 48 myopic eyes of 40 patients with MF and axial lengths(ALs)ranging from 26-32 mm treated between January 2020 and January 2022.All patients were underwent PPV combined with ILM peeling followed by sterile air or silicone oil tamponade and followed up at least 12mo.Based on the features on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT),the eyes were divided into the MF-only group(Group A,n=15 eyes),MF with central foveal detachment group(Group B,n=20 eyes),and MF with lamellar macular hole group(Group C,n=13 eyes).According to AL,eyes were further divided into three groups:Group D(26.01-28.00 mm,n=12 eyes),Group E(28.01-30.00 mm,n=26 eyes),and Group F(30.01-32.00 mm,n=10 eyes).The best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),central foveal thickness(CFT),and complications were recorded.RESULTS:The patients included 16 males and 24 females with the mean age of 56±9.82y.The BCVA and CFT improved in all groups after surgery(P0.05).The intergroup differences of BCVA and CFT postoperatively were statistically significant in Group D,E,and F.Twenty eyes were injected with sterile air,and 28 eyes were injected with silicone oil for tamponade based on the AL.However,there was no statistically significant difference among Groups D,E,and F in terms of the results of sterile air or silicone oil tamponade.The mean recovery time was 5.9mo for MF patients subjected to silicone oil tamponade and 7.7mo for patients subjected to sterile air tamponade,and the difference was not statistically significant.CONCLUSION:PPV and ILM peeling combined with silicone oil or sterile air tamponade can achieve good results for MF in highly myopic eyes with ALs≤32 mm.

The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau(QTP)is well known as the Roof of the World,the Third Pole and the Asian Water Tower.It spans a vast area from the Pamir Plateau in the west to the Longmenshan-Hengduan Mountains in the east,from the Himalaya Mountains in the south to the Kunlun-Qilian Mountains in the north.It stretches approximately 1,200 km from north to south and 2,500 km from east to west.When did the QTP start to uplift?This is still controversial between early and late Cenozoic scenarios.While some scholars advocated its uplift since the India-Asia continental collision at about 65 million years ago in the Paleogene(e.g.,Ding et al.,2017,2022),and the others suggested its uplift since the Miocene(Zheng and Wu,2018).

The morphological changes in isolated bubbles in gassy silt play a critical role in the microscopic structures between soil particles and bubbles and macroscopic physical properties.Based on X-ray CT scanning experiments under various vertical loads(four levels),self-designed acoustic macro experiments,and a series of formula revisions to the macro-air-bearing silt sound-velocity prediction model,this paper discusses the macro-and micro-scale features of gassy silts from the Yellow River Delta.The samples consisted of different proportions of silt from the Yellow River Delta and porous media,and they were used to form two types of aerosol silts with initial gas contents of 4.23%and 7.67%.The results show that the air bubble content and external load considerably affect the microstructural parameters and acoustic behavior of gassy silt in the Yellow River Delta.The macroscopic sound velocity showed a linear positive correlation with vertical load and relation to microstructural parameters in varying manners and degrees.Based on the traditional Biot-Stoll acoustic model,the gas-phase medium coefficient was introduced for the proper calculation and prediction of the sound velocity of air-bearing silt.The errors of the overall prediction varied between 5.6%and 9.6%.
