The scour process induced by plunging jets is an important topic for hydraulic engineers. In recent decades, several researchers have developed new strategies and methodologies to control the scour morphology, including different jet arrangements and structures located in the stilling basin. It has been found that multiple jets can cause less scouring than single plunging jets. Based on this evidence, this study aimed to investigate the equilibrium morphology caused by multiple non-crossing jets. A dedicated laboratory model was built and experimental tests were carried out under different combinations of jet inclination angles, by varying the tailwater level and the virtual crossing point location, which was set below the original channel bed level. It was experimentally shown that the equilibrium scour morphology depends on the jet discharge, the differences in non-crossing jet inclination angles, the downstream water level, and the distance of the virtual crossing point from the original channel bed level. In particular, the last parameter was found to be one of the most influential parameters, because of the resulting flow patterns inside the water body. Furthermore, the analysis of experimental evidence allowed for a complete and detailed classification of the scour hole typologies. Three different scour typologies were distinguished and classified. Finally, based on previous studies, two novel re-lationships have been proposed to predict both the maximum scour depth and length within a large range of hydraulic and geometric parameters.

This paper presents the development and testing of a novel internal dissipation connection for the use of post-tensioned rocking *** solution is one of the many referring to the dissipative controlled rocking(DCR)bridge design *** internal dissipaters are carefully designed to be cost-effective and reduce the over-all construction *** dissipaters are fully threaded,Grade 300 bars connected to the permanent column and foundation longitudinal reinforcement with threaded *** this research,a DCR column is subjected to subsequent earthquake events,and the dissipaters’strain design limits are chosen such that there is no need for replacing after a significant seismic *** result is a recommended design strain limit of 1.5%for the dissi-paters that guarantees the structural integrity of the DCR column after a seismic ***,a cumulated strain of 5%is recommended for the dissipaters before replacement is *** proposed connection de-tailing with replaceable internal dissipaters,combined with post-tensioned high strength bars and well-confined concrete,provided self-centring capabilities(no residual displacement),dissipation capacity and significantly less damage in the bridge column than a traditional reinforced concrete solution.

Sediment load plays a major role in the morphological evolution of ***,the analysis of the sediment load interaction with hydraulic structures is of main importance in order to enhance the preservation of fish habitats and river morphological *** present study analyzes the scour mechanisms downstream of a block ramp in live bed conditions,when the sediment supplied by the approaching flow is balanced by the sediment transported out of the scour *** were performed in a model flume and the effect of the approaching sediment concentration on the scour geometry was *** was observed that the scour features depend deeply on the approaching sediment concentration and four main profile configurations were *** experimental data were analyzed and empirical relationships were developed in order to evaluate the depth and length of a scour hole,the dune height and the distance of the transversal section of maximum dune height from the ramp toe for different hydraulic and geometric *** was also proved that the dynamic equilibrium shape of a scour hole does not depend on the sediment load time history.

Determination of estrogenic activity in the river Chienti(Marche Region, Italy) by using in vivo and in vitro bioassays

Environmental estrogen-like compounds（i.e. xenoestrogens） are a variety of pollutants,ranging from synthetic to natural occurring molecules, that are found in surface and waste waters over a wide range of concentrations. In aquatic environment, the overall estrogenic activity is often due to the presence of a mixture of chemicals and their degraded products which can induce synergistic effects. Current strategies for monitoring estrogen-like chemicals are based on the use of a battery of in vivo and in vitro ecotoxicological tests. In this regard, the aim of the present work was to carry out a bio-monitoring study for testing estrogenicity of the Chienti river（Marche Region, Italy） by using both an E-screen and a vitellogenin（Vtg） induction assay in juvenile goldfish. Three sites were used for analysis,localized at the mouth（sampling point 1）, in the middle（sampling point 2） and at the origin（sampling point 3） of Chienti river. For most of the water samples（i.e. samples collected at sampling points 2 and 3）, clear estrogenic activity was detected in the E-screen assay suggesting different proliferation activities in function of the collecting site. In contrast, the Vtg ELISA demonstrated that water samples collected from each sampling point were estrogenic. Overall, we showed for the first time that the estrogenic activities in water samples from the Chienti river were significant in both in vivo and in vitro; we also observed a different sensitivity between bioassays.

This paper takes into consideration the influence of human activities on the loss of pedodiversity in a Mediterranean area due to large scale *** particular it examines the quantitative and qualitative soil changes in a period of 53 years(from 1955 to 2008)evaluating the loss of soil diversity at soil subgroups level of the USDA Soil Taxonomy *** following indices were used:richness;Shannon’s diversity index;Simpson diversity index;Shannon’s evenness index;Simpson’s evenness *** this case study,considering what we observed in time,the human intervention in soil transformation could increase the diversity in the landscape in an initial phase,but forwarding by large scale farming the result is a huge loss of pedodiversity in time,as diversity indices remarkably have *** analysis enabled identification of disappeared soil types,with their unique history of *** our opinion this strongly reflects a sort of“genetic erosion”of the soil types,resulting in a substantial weakening of the whole pedo-ecosystem.

This paper summarizes the research on non-structural elements and building contents being conducted at University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Since the 2010-2011 series of Canterbury earthquakes, in which damage to non-structural components and contents contributed heavily to downtime and overall financial loss, attention to seismic performance and design of non-structural components and contents in buildings has increased exponentially in NZ. This has resulted in an increased allocation of resources to research leading to development of more resilient non-structural systems in buildings that would incur substantially less damage and cause little downtime during earthquakes. In the last few years, NZ researchers have made important developments in understanding and improving the seismic performance of secondary building elements such as partitions, facades, ceilings and contents.
