Adaptive,morphing flaps are taking ever-increasing attention in civil aviation thanks to the expected benefits this technology can bring at the aircraft level in terms of high-lift performance improvement and related fuel burnt reduction per flight.Relying upon morphing capabilities,it is possible to fix a unique setting for the flap and adapt the flap shape to match the aerodynamic requirements for take-off or landing.The proper morphed shapes can assure better high-lift performances than those achievable by referring to a conventional flap.Moreover,standing the unique flap setting for take-off and landing,a dramatic simplification of the flap deployment systems may be achieved.As a consequence of this simplification,the deployment system can be fully hosted in the wing,thus avoiding under-wing nacelles with significantly better aerodynamics and fuel consumption.The first step for a rational design of an adaptive flap consists in defining the target morphed shapes and the unique optimal flap setting in the take-off and landing phases.In this work,aerodynamic optimization analyses are carried out to determine the best flap setting and related morphed shapes in compliance with the take-off and landing requirements of a reference civil transport aircraft.Four different initial conditions are adopted to avoid the optimization falling into local optima,thus obtaining four groups of optimal candidate configurations.After comparing each candidate’s performance through 2D and 3D simulations,the optimal configuration has been selected.2D simulations show that the optimal configuration is characterized by a maximum lift increase of 31.92%in take-off and 9.04%in landing.According to 3D simulations,the rise in maximum lift equals 22.26%in take-off and 3.50%in landing.Numerical results are finally verified through wind tunnel tests,and the aerodynamic mechanism behind the obtained improvements is explained by carefully analyzing the flow field around the flap.

Recent advances in coupling light-harvesting microorganisms with electronic components have led to a new generation of biohybrid devices based on microbial photocatalysts.These devices are limited by the poorly conductive interface between phototrophs and synthetic materials that inhibit charge transfer.This study focuses on overcoming this bottleneck through the metabolically-driven encapsulation of photosynthetic cells with a bio-inspired conductive polymer.Cells of the purple non sulfur bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides were coated with a polydopamine(PDA)nanoparticle layer via the self-polymerization of dopamine under anaerobic conditions.The treated cells show preserved light absorption of the photosynthetic pigments in the presence of dopamine concentrations ranging between 0.05–3.5 mM.The thickness and nanoparticle formation of the membrane-associated PDA matrix were further shown to vary with the dopamine concentrations in this range.Compared to uncoated cells,the encapsulated cells show up to a 20-fold enhancement in transient photocurrent measurements under mediatorless conditions.The biologically synthesized PDA can thus act as a matrix for electronically coupling the light-harvesting metabolisms of cells with conductive surfaces.

Ensuring a sufficient oxygen supply is pivotal for the success of bioprinting applications since it fosters tissue integration and natural regeneration.Variation in oxygen concentration among diverse tissues necessitates the precise recreation of tissue-specific oxygen levels in imprinted constructs to support the survival of targeted cells.Although oxygen-releasing biomaterials,such as oxygen-generating microparticles(OMPs),have shown promise for enhancing the oxygen supply of microenvironments in injured tissues,whether this approach is scalable for large tissues and whether tissue-specific bioinks with varying OMP concentrations remain printable remain unknown.This study addresses this critical gap by introducing an innovative class of engineered oxygenated bioinks that combine colloidal-based microgels with OMPs.We report that incorporating nanosized calcium peroxide(nCaO_(2))and manganese oxide nanosheets(nMnO_(2))into hydrophobic polymeric microparticles enables precise modulation of oxygen release while controlling hydrogen peroxide release.Moreover,the fabrication of oxygenating and cytocompatible colloidal gels is achieved using an aqueous two-phase system.This study thoroughly evaluates the fundamental characteristics of the resulting bioink,including its rheological behaviors,printability,shape fidelity,mechanical properties,and oxygen release properties.Moreover,this study demonstrates the macroscopic scalability and cytocompatibility of printed constructs produced via cell-laden oxygenating colloidal bioinks.By showcasing the effectiveness of extrusion-based bioprinting,this study underscores how it can be used to fabricate biomimetic tissues,indicating its potential for new applications.The findings presented here advance the bioprinting field by achieving scalability with both high cell viability and the possibility of mimicking specifically oxygenated tissues.This work thereby offers a promising avenue for the development of functional tissues with enhanced physiological relevance.

Background:Guidelines recommend that adolescents should accumulate an average of 60 min per day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity(MVPA).However,using only this cut-off could hide important information.For instance,from a population-level point of view,increasing physical activity for those with no or low physical activity could provide more health benefits than increasing physical activity for those with intermediate levels.Also,including a more sensitive cut-point of≥1 days per week could be an additional strategy for identifying those with low access/opportunities for physical activity practice.Thus,the current study aims to estimate the prevalence of≥60 min of MVPA≥1 days per week among adolescents globally,and to describe any relevant gender inequalities.Methods:We used representative datasets from 146 countries/territories collected between 2003 and 2019.MVPA was self-reported.Participants were grouped into younger(≤14 years old)and older(>14 years old)adolescents.Crude Poisson regression models were used to identify the relative differences in≥60 min of MVPA≥1 days per week between boys and girls,and random-effects meta-analysis models were used to identify the pooled estimates.Analyses were stratified by country and region.Results:Approximately 80%of both younger and older adolescents reported≥60 min of MVPA≥1 days per week.This prevalence was≥94%in Europe and Central Asia and North America,while the estimates for the other regions were14y)=1.09(95%CI:1.08-1.10)).Conclusion:Approximately 8 out of 10 adolescents reported accumulating≥60 min of MVPA≥1 days per week,with notable differences between regions.Gender differences were observed in several countries,especially among the oldest adolescents.Priorities for physical activity promotion among adolescents

Blockchain is a technology that creates trust among non-trusting parties without relying on any intermediaries.Consequently,it has attracted the interest of companies operating in a multitude of sectors.However,due to the number of different blockchain solutions that have emerged in the last few years and their rapid changes,it is challenging for such companies to orient their technological decisions.This paper presents a comparative analysis of the key dimensions—namely,governance,maturity,support,latency,privacy,interoperability,flexibility,efficiency,resiliency,and scalability—of some of the most-used permissioned blockchain platforms.Moreover,we present the results of a performance evaluation considering the following frameworks:Hyperledger Fabric 2.2,Hyperledger Sawtooth 1.2,and ConsenSys Quorum 21.1(with both the GoQuorum client and the Hyperledger Besu client).The platforms were tested under similar conditions,and official releases were used,such that our findings provide a reference for companies establishing their technological orientation.

In recent years,blockchain technologies have expanded from the finance field to other areas that rely on trustbased solutions.The healthcare industry represents one such area,as digital transformation disrupts relationships between patients,healthcare professionals,and healthcare institutes.Patients and healthcare institutes lack a proficient tool to verify the credentials of medical professionals in a digital environment.Furthermore,healthcare professionals lack a tool where they are in control over their credentials.The first contribution of this paper is a proposal of a solution that leverages the private permissioned Hyperledger Fabric blockchain and smart contracts to provide a source of transparent trust for relationships within the healthcare industry.Second,we pave the ground for GDPR compliance by storing only the hash values on the blockchain.Third,we solve the problem of patient authentication by utilizing cryptographic techniques.Finally,we prove the usability of the proposed solution by implementing a user interface and creating a live deployment.

Objective: To evaluate transperineal laser ablation (TPLA) with Echolaser® (Echolaser® TPLA, Elesta S.p.A., Calenzano, Italy) as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa) using the Delphi consensus method.Methods: Italian and international experts on BPH and PCa participated in a collaborative consensus project. During two rounds, they expressed their opinions on Echolaser® TPLA for the treatment of BPH and PCa answering online questionnaires on indications, methodology, and potential complications of this technology. Level of agreement or disagreement to reach consensus was set at 75%. If the consensus was not achieved, questions were modified after each round. A final round was performed during an online meeting, in which results were discussed and finalized.Results: Thirty-two out of forty invited experts participated and consensus was reached on all topics. Agreement was achieved on recommending Echolaser® TPLA as a treatment of BPH in patients with ample range of prostate volume, from 80 mL (80%), comorbidities (100%), antiplatelet or anticoagulant treatment (96%), indwelling catheter (77%), and strong will of preserving ejaculatory function (100%). Majority of respondents agreed that Echolaser® TPLA is a potential option for the treatment of localized PCa (78%) and recommended it for low-risk PCa (90%). During the final round, experts concluded that it can be used for intermediate-risk PCa and it should be proposed as an effective alternative to radical prostatectomy for patients with strong will of avoiding urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Almost all participants agreed that the transperineal approach of this organ-sparing technique is safer than transrectal and transurethral approaches typical of other techniques (97% of agreement among experts). Since its inception,bitcoin has used the popular consensus protocol proof-of-work(PoW).PoW has a well-known flaw:it distributes all rewards to a single miner(or pool)who inserts a new block.Consequently,the variance of rewards and the mining enter-prise risk are extremely high.In 2016,Shi proposed addressing this problem with a theoretical algorithm.We introduce an easily-implemented PoW variant that improves Shi’s idea.The network must not find a single nonce but a few to insert a block.This simple change allows for a fairer distribution of rewards and also has the effect of regularizing the insertion time of blocks.This method would facilitate the emergence of small pools or autonomous miners.

The potential benefits of hybrid-electric or all-electric propulsion have led to a growing interest in this topic over the past decade.Preliminary design of propulsion systems and innovative configurations has been extensively discussed in literature,but steps towards higher levels of technological readiness,optimisation algorithms based on reliable weight estimation and simulationbased mission analysis are required.This paper focuses on the integration of a method for evaluating the lateral-directional controllability of an aircraft within a design chain that integrates aero-propulsive interactions,accurate modelling of the fuel system,and mid-fidelity estimation of the structural weight.Furthermore,the present work proposes a strategy for powerplant management in scenarios with an inoperative chain element.Benefits of hybrid-electric propulsion on the design of the vertical tail plane are evaluated involving the analysis of multiple failure scenarios and certification requirements.The proposed application concerns a commuter aircraft.
