Fluvastatin attenuates myocardial interstitial fibrosis and cardiac dysfunction in diabetic rats by inhibiting over-expression of connective tissue growth factor

Background Diabetic myocardiopathy is characterized by myocardial interstitial fibrosis and cardiac dysfunction. Statins were found to exert protective effects on cardiovascular disease by suppressing activation of small G proteins, independently of their lipid-lowering effect. The study investigated the effect of fluvastatin on myocardial interstitial fibrosis, cardiac function and mechanism of its action in diabetic rats. Methods Twenty-four male SD rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups： control rats （n=-8）, streptozotocin （STZ）-induced diabetic rats （n=8）, and diabetic rats treated with fluvastatin （administered fluvastatin orally, 10 mg/kg body weight per day, n=-8）. Twelve weeks later, miniature cardiac catheter was inserted into the left ventricle to conduct hemodynamic examination. Then myocardium tissues were collected, collagen content was detected by picro-sirius red staining, real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR） was used to detect the mRNA expression of connective tissue growth factor （CTGF）, and Western blotting was used to detect the protein expression of CTGF. Rho activity was determined by pull-down assay. Results After 12 weeks, the left ventricular systolic pressure （LVSP） and maximum rate of left ventricular （LV） pressure rise and fall （＋dP/dt max and -dP/dt max） were significantly lower and left ventricular end diastolic pressure （LVEDP） was higher in the diabetic rats than those in the control rats （P 〈0.01）. Moreover, in LV myocardial tissue of diabetic rats the collagen content, fibronectin, mRNA and protein expression of CTGF and the activity of RhoA were all significantly increased compared with the control rats （P 〈0.01）. Administration of fluvastain obviously improved the cardiac function of diabetic rats, attenuated fibronectin expression, mRNA and protein expression of CTGF and the activity of RhoA in LV myocardium of diabetic rats. Schwann cell transplantation is considered one of the most promising cell-based therapy to repair injured spinal cord due to its unique growth-promoting and myelin-forming properties.A the Food and Drug Administration-approved Phase I clinical trial has been conducted to evaluate the safety of transplanted human autologous Schwann cells to treat patients with spinal cord injury.A major challenge for Schwann cell transplantation is that grafted Schwann cells are confined within the lesion cavity,and they do not migrate into the host environment due to the inhibitory barrier formed by injury-induced glial scar,thus limiting axonal reentry into the host spinal *** we introduce a combinatorial strategy by suppressing the inhibitory extracellular environment with injection of lentivirus-mediated transfection of chondroitinase ABC gene at the rostral and caudal borders of the lesion site and simultaneously leveraging the repair capacity of transplanted Schwann cells in adult rats following a mid-thoracic contusive spinal cord *** report that when the glial scar was degraded by chondroitinase ABC at the rostral and caudal lesion borders,Schwann cells migrated for considerable distances in both rostral and caudal *** Schwann cell migration led to enhanced axonal regrowth,including the serotonergic and dopaminergic axons originating from supraspinal regions,and promoted recovery of locomotor and urinary bladder ***,the Schwann cell survival and axonal regrowth persisted up to 6 months after the injury,even when treatment was delayed for 3 months to mimic chronic spinal cord *** findings collectively show promising evidence for a combinatorial strategy with chondroitinase ABC and Schwann cells in promoting remodeling and recovery of function following spinal cord injury.

Protective effect of Danhong injection in patients with acute myocardial infarction at a high risk of no-reflow during primary percutaneous coronary intervention

Effect of Electro-acupuncture on Expression of IRS-1/PI3K/GluT4 Pathway in Ovarian Granulosa Cells of Infertile Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome-Insulin Resistance of Phlegm-Dampness Syndrome

Selective hydrogenation of 4-nitrostyrene to 4-nitroethylbenzene catalyzed by Pd@Ru core–shell nanocubes

It is a challenge to selectively hydrogenate 4-nitrostyrene to 4-nitroethylbenzene,due to the similar energy barrier of hydrogenation of the nitro and vinyl ***,we demonstrate that such selective hydrogenation can be achieved by Pd@Ru core–shell nanocubes that are pre-pared by epitaxial growth of a face-centered cubic Ru shell on Pd *** core–shell structure of Pd@Ru nanocubes is conflrmed by transmission electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction spectroscopy,and elemental mapping *** is found that the electronic structure and hence the catalytic activity of the Pd@Ru nanocubes can be readily modulated by the Ru shell *** is manifested in electrochemical CO stripping measurements where a decrease of CO adsorption energy is observed on Pd@Ru nanocubes with the increase of the Ru shell *** from this study suggest that deliberate structural engineering can be exploited to prepare bimetallic core–shell nanostructures for highly active and selective hydrogenation of organic molecules with multi-functional moieties.

Influence of pre-synthesized Al_(2)O_(3)-SiC composite powder from clay on properties of low-carbon MgO-C refractories

To improve the properties of low-carbonization of MgO–C refractories,the introduction of composite additives is an effective ***_(2)O_(3)–SiC composite powder was prepared from clay using electromagnetic induction heating and carbon embedded ***,the Al_(2)O_(3)–SiC composite powder synthesized by electromagnetic induction heating at 600 A was added into low-carbon MgO–C refractories(4 wt.%)to improve their *** results showed that when the addition amount of Al_(2)O_(3)–SiC composite powder is within the range of 2.5–5.0 wt.%,the properties of low-carbon MgO–C samples were significantly improved,e.g.,the apparent porosity of 7.58%–8.04%,the bulk density of 2.98–2.99 g cm-3,the cold compressive strength of 55.72–57.93 MPa,the residual strength after three air quenching at 1100°C of 74.86%–78.04%,and the decarburized layer depth after oxidized at 1400°C for 2 h of 14.03–14.87 ***,the idea for the rapid synthesis of Al_(2)O_(3)–SiC composite powder provides an alternative low-carbon MgO–C refractories performance optimization strategy.

First application of large reactivity measurement through rod drop based on three-dimensional space–time dynamics

Flexible Nanopaper Composed of Wood-Derived Nanofibrillated Cellulose and Graphene Building Blocks

Nanopaper has attracted considerable interest in the fields of films and paper ***,the challenge of integrating the many advantages of nanopaper still ***,we developed a facile strategy to fabricate multifunctional nanocomposite paper(NGCP)composed of wood-derived nanofibrillated cellulose(NFC)and graphene as building *** suspension was consisted of long and entangled NFCs(10–30 nm in width)and their *** NGCP formation,NFC was chemically modified with a silane coupling agent to ensure that it could interact strongly with graphene in *** resulting NGCP samples were flexible and could be bent repeatedly without any structural *** the NGCP samples,the high aspect ratio of NFC made a major contribution to its high mechanical strength,whereas the sheet-like graphene endowed the NGCP with electrical resistance and electrochemical *** mechanical strength of the NGCP samples decreased as their graphene content ***,the electrical resistance and electrochemical activity of the NGCP samples both rose with increasing content of *** NGCPs still kept advantageous mechanical properties even at high temperatures around 300℃ because of the high thermal stability of NFCs and their strong entangled web-like *** view of its sustainable building blocks and multifunctional characteristics,the NGCP developed in this work is promising as low-cost and high-performance nanopaper.

Hydrothermal synthesis and photoluminescence behavior of CeO_2 nanowires with the aid of surfactant PVP

Well-crystalline CeO_2 nanowires were prepared via a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal *** temperature and reaction time were changed for the determination of optimal synthesis *** as-obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）,high-resolution transmission electron microscopy（HRTEM）,and field emission scanning electron microscopy（FESEM）.The results show that single crystal CeO_2 nanowires with high yield and good uniformity can be obtained hydrothermally at 180℃for 12 h with the aid of 2.0 g surfactant（polyvinyl pyrrolidone,PVP）.The role of PVP was then discussed and a possible growth mechanism was proposed. Moreover,room temperature photoluminescence（PL） spectra were obtained for these CeO2 nanowires,which are believed to be related to the abundant defects in these nanostructures.
