Variations in microbial biomass C (MB-C),N (MB-N) and P (MB-P) along a gradient of different dominant vegeta- tion covers (natural forest,mixed deciduous forest,disturbed savanna and grassland ecosystems) in dry tropical soils of Vindhyan Plateau,India were studied from January 2005 to december *** water holding capacity,organic C,total N,total P and soil moisture content were comparatively higher in forest soils than in the savanna and grassland *** different study sites the mean annual MB-C,MB-N and MB-P at 0-15 cm soil depth varied from 312.05 ± 4.22 to 653.40 ± 3.17,32.16 ± 6.25 to 75.66 ± 7.21 and 18.94 ± 2.94 to 30.83 ± 23.08 μg g ?1 dry soil,*** all the investigated sites,the maximum MB-C,MB-N and MB-P occurred during the dry period (summer season) and the minimum in wet period (rainy season).In the present study,soil MB-C,MB-N and MB-P were higher at the forest sites compared to savanna and grassland *** differences in MB-C,MB-N and MB-P were significant (P d *** MB-C (P d MB-P (P d with organic C,while the relationship between soil moisture and MB-C,MB-N and MB-P (P d P decreasing order of MB-C,MB-N and MB-P along study ecosystems was natural forest > mixed deciduous forest > savanna > *** results suggested that deforestation and land use practices (conversion of forest into savanna and grassland) caused the alterations in soil properties,which as a consequence,led to reduction in soil nutrients and MB-C,MB-N and MB-P in the soil of disturbed sites (grassland and savanna) compared to undisturbed forest ecosystems.

Salt-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria （PGPR） can play an important role in alleviating soil salinity stress during plant growth and bacterial exopolysaccharide （EPS） can also help to mitigate salinity stress by reducing the content of Na＋ available for plant uptake. In this study, native bacterial strains of wheat rhizosphere in soils of Varanasi, India, were screened to identify the EPS-producing salt-tolerant rhizobacteria with plant growth-promoting traits. The various rhizobacteria strains were isolated and identified using 16S rdNA sequencing. The plant growth-promoting effect of inoculation of seedlings with these bacterial strains was evaluated under soil salinity conditions in a pot experiment. Eleven bacterial strains which initially showed tolerance up to 80 g L-1 NaC1 also exhibited an EPS-producing potential. The results suggested that the isolated bacterial strains demonstrated some of the plant growth-promoting traits such as phosphate solubilizing ability and production of auxin, proline, reducing sugars, and total soluble sugars. Furthermore, the inoculated wheat plants had an increased biomass compared to the unoinoculated plants.

The investigated area around Sarvapuram represents a part of the Karimnagar granulite terrane of the Eastern dharwar Craton, India. Garnet–bearing gneiss is hosted as enclaves, pods within granite gneiss and charnockite. It is largely made up of garnet, orthopyroxene, cordierite, biotite, plagioclase, K–feldspar, sillimanite and quartz. The peak metamorphic stage is represented by the equilibrium mineral assemblage i.e. garnet, orthopyroxene, cordierite, biotite, plagioclase, sillimanite and quartz. Breakdown of the garnet as well as preservation of the orthopyroxene–cordierite symplectite, formation of cordierite with the consumption of the garnet + sillimanite + quartz represents the decompressional event. The thermobarometric calculations suggest a retrograde P–T path with a substantial decompression of c. 3.0 kbar. The water activity(XH2 O) conditions obtained with the win TWQ program for core and symplectite compositions from garnet–bearing gneiss are 0.07–0.14 and 0.11–0.16 respectively. The quantitative estimation of oxygen fugacity in garnet–bearing gneiss reveal log f O2 values ranging from-11.38 to-14.05. This high oxidation state could be one of the reasons that account for the absence of graphite in these rocks.

Unreinforced Masonry (URM) is the most common partitioning material in framed buildings in India and many other countries. Although it is well-known that under lateral loading the behavior and modes of failure of the frame buildings change significantly due to infill-frame interaction, the general design practice is to treat infills as nonstructural elements and their stiffness, strength and interaction with the frame is often ignored, primarily because of difficulties in simulation and lack of modeling guidelines in design codes. The Indian Standard, like many other national codes, does not provide explicit insight into the anticipated performance and associated vulnerability of infilled frames. This paper presents an analytical study on the seismic performance and fragility analysis of Indian code-designed RC frame buildings with and without URM infills. Infills are modeled as diagonal struts as per ASCE 41 guidelines and various modes of failure are considered. HAZUS methodology along with nonlinear static analysis is used to compare the seismic vulnerability of bare and infilled frames. The comparative study suggests that URM infills result in a significant increase in the seismic vulnerability of RC frames and their effect needs to be properly incorporated in design codes.

The optical and structural properties of Tb^(3+)-doped yttrium and gadolinium oxyorthosilicate(Y_(2)SiO_(5) and Gd_(2)SiO_(5)) phosphors were *** samples were synthesized via sol-gel combustion method using organic *** phase purity and structural properties of the samples were determined via combined approach of powder X-ray diffraction,Fourier transformation infrared(FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).X-ray measurements revel monoclinic crystal lattice with P_(21/c) symmetry for both M_(2)SiO_(5)(pure host) and M_(2)SiO_(5):Tb^(3+)(doped) silicates,irrespective of the nature of metal(Y or Gd),presence or absence of Tb^(3+)in lattice and change in calcination temperature up to 1050℃.FTIR analysis was applied to confirm the bonding of prepared *** appearance of bands corresponding to SiO_(4) tetrahedra(880-1020 cm^(-1)) suggest the layered structure and support the diffraction *** micrographs confirm the synthesis of spherical nanoparticles with filled morphology,narrow size distribution and slightly agglomerated crystallites of the *** elemental composition of prepared materials was determined using energy dispersive X-ray *** spectra show peaks only for elements assimilated within the host *** photoluminescence(PL) emission spectra of Tb^(3+)-doped samples show ^(5)d_(4)→^(7)F_(J)(J=3-6) transitions under 254 *** dominant peak at 544 nm for ^(5)d_(4)→^(7)F_(5) transition is responsible for the emission of green light on ultraviolet-visible excitation in both the Tb^(3+)-doped host *** to advantageous properties like intense PL and high crystallinity,these nanophosphors could possess potential applications in the mercury free lighting sources and optoelectronic devices.

OBJECTIVE:To conduct an ethnobotanical survey and document the traditional anticancer and antidiabetic plants used by the local tribes of Mizoram,Northeast ***:A systematic survey was conducted in rural and urban areas of Mizoram by interviewing traditional practitioners,and cancer and diabetes patients.A detailed literature search was carried out using MEdLINE and SCOPUS and available literatures were selected and included in the *** use value(UV)of the selected plants was calculated based on the number of citations per species given by ***:data was obtained for 201 traditional medicinal plants from Mizoram,Northeast *** plants were from 72 different families and belonged to 140 *** these,103 plants were reported for the first time as possessing either anticancer or antidiabetic potential,and 105 plants were identified that were used for the treatment of both *** plants(Phlogacanthus thysiformis,Solanum gilo and Lobelia angulata)with antidiabetic potential,and six plants(dillenia scabrella,Circium sinesis,Eupatorium nodiflorum,Pratia begonifolia,Vernonia teres and Plantago erosa)with both as anticancer and antidiabetic potential were documented for the first ***:In this study,we documented several explored and unexplored medicinal plants that may be useful for the management of cancer and *** study suggests that there is a broad scope fordeveloping potent anticancer and antidiabetic agent from the flora of Mizoram,Northeast India.

In this paper,the spatio-temporal variation and propagation direction of coal fire were studied in the Jharia Coalfield(JCF),India during 2006–2015 through satellite-based night-time land surface temperature(LST)*** LST was retrieved from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer(ASTER)night-time thermal-infrared data by a robust split-window algorithm based on scene-specific regression coefficients,band-specific hybrid emissivity,and night-time atmospheric *** LST-profile-based coal fire detection algorithm was formulated through statistical analysis of the LST values along multiple transects across diverse coal fire locations in the JCF in order to compute date-specific threshold temperatures for separating thermally-anomalous and background *** algorithm efficiently separates surface fire,subsurface fire,and thermally-anomalous transitional *** the observation period,it was noticed that the coal fire area increased significantly,which resulted from new coal fire at many places owing to extensive opencast-mining *** was observed that the fire propagation occurred primarily along the dip direction of the coal *** places,lateral-propagation of limited spatial extent was also observed along the strike direction possibly due to spatial continuity of the coal seams along ***,the opencast-mining activities carried out during 2009–2015 and the structurally weak planes facilitated the fire propagation.

Cryptotanshinone ameliorates cladribine-induced cognitive impairment in rats

Objective:To evaluate the neuroprotective effect of cryptotanshinone against cladribine-induced cognitive impairment in ***:Rats were administered with cladribine(1 mg/kg,p.o.)and cryptotanshinone(10 and 20 mg/kg,i.p.)for four *** tests such as Morris water maze and elevated plus maze were conducted to check memory impairment caused by *** day 29,all rats were sacrificed,and the brains were separated for estimation of neuroinflammatory factors,biochemical parameters,neurotransmitters,Aβ(1-42),blood-brain barrier permeability,nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2),and brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BdNF).Results:Treatment with cryptotanshinone dose-dependently enhanced spatial memory,improved the levels of neurotransmitter and antioxidant enzymes,and suppressed proinflammatory cytokine *** also decreased Aβ(1-42)accumulation and increased the levels of Nrf2 and BdNF in the ***,the histopathological results showed that cryptotanshinone reduced cladribine-induced neuronal death in the ***:Cryptotanshinone exhibits a promising neuroprotective effect against cladribine-induced cognitive impairment in preclinical studies,and may be a potential phytochemical for the treatment and management of cognitive impairment.

Optical anisotropy and the direction of polarization of exciton emissions in a semiconductor quantum dot:Effect of heavy-and light-hole mixing

The dependence of the directions of polarization of exciton emissions, fine structure splittings （FSS）, and polarization anisotropy on the light- and heavy-hole （LH-HH） mixing in semiconductor quantum dots （Qds） is investigated using a mesoscopic model. In general, all Qds have a four-fold exciton ground state. Two exciton states have directions of polarization in the growth-plane, while the other two are along the growth direction of the Qd. The LH-HH mixing does affect the FSS and polarization anisotropy of bright exciton states in the growth-plane in the low symmetry Qds （e.g., C2v, CS, C1 ）, while it has no effect on the FSS and polarization anisotropy in high symmetry Qds （e.g., C3V, d2d）. When the hole ground state is pure HH or LH, the bright exciton states in the growth-plane are normal to each other. The LH-HH mixing affects the relative intensities and directions of bright exciton states in the growth-plane of the Qd. The polarization anisotropy of exciton emissions in the growth-plane of the Qd is independent of the phase angle of LH-HH mixing but strongly depends on the magnitude of LH-HH mixing in low symmetry Qds.
