Transfer Factor of Heavy Metals due to Mining Activities in some Parts of Plateau state,Nigeria(Health Implications on the Inhabitants)

Accumulation of heavy metals in agricultural soils is instigated by industrial and other human activities such as mining,smelting,cement-pollution,energy and fuel production,power transmission,traffic activities,intensive agriculture,sludge dumping and melting *** received heavy metals from soils through ionic exchange,redox reactions,precipitation-dissolution,and so on,which implies that the solubility of trace elements based on factors like minerals in the soil(carbonates,oxide,hydroxide etc.),soil organic matter(humic acids,fulvic acids,polysaccharides and organic acids),soil pH,redox potential,content,nutrient balance,other trace elements concentration in soil,physical and mechanical characteristics of soil,soil temperature and humidity,and so *** this study,the soil-edible plant and soil-water Transfer Factor(TF)for various metals showed that the TF values differed slightly between the *** soil-edible plant transfer,the mean TF for different heavy metals in soil-edible plants decreased in the following order:As(0.6)mg/kg>Cd(0.1)mg/kg>Cr(0.06)mg/kg>Pb(0.003)mg/kg>Ni(0.001)mg/*** total TF for different locations decreases in the following order:Barkin Ladi(1.0)mg/kg>Jos south and Jos East(0.7)mg/kg>Bassa and Mangu(0.6)mg/*** soil-water transfer,the mean TF for different heavy metals in soil-edible plants decreased in the following order:Cd(0.001)mg/L>As(0.0007)mg/L>Cr(0.0005)mg/L>Pb(0.0001)mg/L and Ni(0.0001)mg/*** total TF for different locations decreases in the following order:Jos south(0.003)mg/kg>Barkin Ladi,Bassa,Jos East and Mangu(0.002)mg/*** on the findings of this study,it can be concluded that the water and edible plants in the study area are good for public consumption,even though,regular checking of heavy metals in the study area is recommended.

The association of radiation with matter,being it from external means(*** sources)or from internal pollution of the body by toxic substances,can pose biological hazard which may show the clinical symptoms *** nature and extent of these symptoms and the time they take to appear are a function of the amount of radiation absorbed and the rate at which it is *** study aimed at assessing the health effects of radiation exposure to human sensitive organs across some selected mining sites of Plateau state *** of this study have revealed that the mean dorgan values for the lungs,ovaries,bone marrow,testes,kidney,liver and whole body for different mining points of Plateau state are 0.29 msv/y,0.26 msv/y,0.31 msv/y,0.36 msv/y,0.28 msv/y,0.21 msv/y and 0.30 msv/y *** the findings presented,it can be concluded that the background radiation in Plateau state is not an issue of health concern in regards to sensitive organs and may not course immediate health effect except when accumulated over long period of time which may cause cancer to the indoor members on approximately seventy years of exposure.

This paper examined the impact of National special Program for Food security （NsPFs） on the beneficiaries through a qualitative measurement of the food security status of the beneficiaries. A food insecurity index was estimated to measure the well-being of the beneficiaries as affected by the impact of the program. Beneficiaries were classified into four categories： food secure （41%）, food insecure without hunger （46%）, food insecure with moderate hunger （11%）, and food insecure with severe hunger （2%）. Perceptions of beneficiaries were measured. In conclusion, the program has had a positive impact and enhanced food security among the Nigerian beneficiaries. It is not without its short comings which include delayed and untimely disbursement of funds and lack of output markets, irrigation facilities, production inputs and adequate training on technology know-how. The default rate and number of debtors remain high among beneficiaries. Efforts should be made to correct the short comings to improve the effectiveness of the program and justify the huge financial resources that have been committed.

Functionalization of silica surfaces using organo-silanes is highly sensitive to reaction conditions. silica-coated nanoparticles were functionalized with propyl-sulfonic acid groups (Ps) under different synthesis conditions including, various solvents (Ethanol, methanol, acetonitrile, and toluene), water content in the reaction media (0% to 50%), 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane concentration (MPTMs) (0.5% to 10%), and reaction time (6 to 16 h). size of the Ps-nanoparticles was determined by TEM and varied from 3.5 to 20.3 nm with sulfur load. Elemental analysis revealed sulfur contents from 0.8% to 22%. FTIR analysis showed increased C-H band intensities with increasing sulfur content of Ps-nanoparticles. Although Ps-nanoparticles with sulfur loads under 3% did not improve the hydrolysis of cellobiose, Ps acid-functionalized nanoparticles with about 6% s achieved 96.0% cellobiose conversion. The control experiment, without catalyst, converted 32.8% of the initial cellobiose. Ps-nanoparticles with (6% - 8% s) were obtained using (0.5%) silane concentration and 15 - 16 h reaction time in ethanol.

Myrtus communis L. is a spontaneous aromatic plant typical of the Mediterranean area. Myrtle berries hydrodistilled products and ethanolic extracts are mainly used as flavouring agents and food supplements. This study evaluated the effect of long-term storage on the quality-related properties of myrtle berries. storage at 2 ~C for three months effbctively preserved myrtle berries quality, both in the chemical composition and external appearance. No symptoms of chilling injury and decay occurred during the first two months of storage, at the end of storage only the 1.3% of rotting was detected. Total anthocyanic content and anthocyanin glycosides diminished whereas the antioxidant capacity increased in all samples till the end of storage. The antioxidant properties of myrtle berries were not correlated with the anthocyanic fraction. The pH of myrtle berries decreased, while gluconic acid levels increased. The results reported in this paper showed that the storage at 2 ~C for three months appears to be an effective way to preserve myrtle berries quality. The changes in the chemical composition of the fruits subjected to storage had revealed the importance of gluconic acid and pH for myrtle quality assessment. These two parameters can be used as quality markers since a strong relationship has been found between myrtle decay and the changes in these parameters,

A series of block copolymers consisting of an isotropic (polystyrene) block and a side-chain liquid crystallineblock (LC) have been studied using small-angle X-ray scattering and dielectric spectroscopy. The triblock copolymer (Ps-LC-Ps) displays an order-to-order transition (OOT) together with the isotropic/nematic transition of the LC phase. The seriesof diblock copolymers show no clear OOT but the phase diagram differs from that of non-LC block copolymers. Thesegmental dynamics as measured with dielectric spectroscopy is dominated by the α and δ relaxation of the LC block. Bothdisplay a WLF like temperature dependence. The relaxation times are influenced by the constraints of the nanoscale *** are decreased for the LC confined in the domain as compared to the LC in the continuous matrix.

A new system’s geo-referencing from space is entirely free from any GNss (GPs or equivalent) systems. The system addresses to various strategic and economic applications such as in remote clock synchronism, aircraft and balloon navigation, missile and smart bombs tracking, satellite orbital determination and remote target geo-positioning. The new geometry concept corresponds to an “inverted GPs” configuration, utilizing four ground-based reference stations, synchronized in time, installed at well known geodesic coordinates and a repeater in space, carried by an aircraft, balloon, satellite, etc. signal transmitted by one of the reference bases is retransmitted by the transponder, received back by the four bases, producing four ranging measurements which are corrected for the time delays undergone in every retransmission. A minimization function was derived to compare the repeater’s positions referred to at least two groups of three reference bases, to correct for the signal transit time at the repeater and propagation delays, and consequently to provide the accurate repeater position for each time interaction. Once the repeater’s coordinates are known, the other determinations and applications become straightforward. The system solving algorithm and process performance has been demonstrated by simulations adopting a practical example with the transponder carried by an aircraft moving over bases and a target on the ground. Effects produced by reference clock synchronism uncertainties at the four bases on the measurements are reviewed.

Nonlinear profile order for three-dimensional hybrid radial acquisition applied to self-gated free-breathing cardiac cine MRI

This paper presents a nonlinear profile order scheme for three-dimensional（3d） hybrid radial acquisition applied to self-gated, free-breathing cardiac cine magnetic resonance imaging（MRI）. In self-gated, free-breathing cardiac cine MRI,respiratory and cardiac motions are unpredictable during acquisition, especially for retrospective reconstruction. Therefore,the non-uniformity of the k-space distribution is an issue of great concern during retrospective self-gated reconstruction. A nonlinear profile order with varying azimuthal increments was provided and compared with the existing golden ratio-based profile order. Optimal parameter values for the nonlinear formula were chosen based on simulations. The two profile orders were compared in terms of the k-space distribution and phantom and human image results. An approximately uniform distribution was obtained based on the nonlinear profile order for persons with various heart rates and breathing *** nonlinear profile order provides more stable profile distributions and fewer streaking artifacts in phantom images. In a comparison of human cardiac cine images, the nonlinear profile order provided results comparable to those provided by the golden ratio-based profile order, and the images were suitable for diagnosis. In conclusion, the nonlinear profile order scheme was demonstrated to be insensitive to various motion patterns and more useful for retrospective reconstruction.
