Intraoeular. lens implantation after cataract extraction has become a common practice in the United States. However, unwanted optical images can correet an otherwise successful surgery into one that causes patient dissatisfaction. Refinements in manufacturing design and finishing have greatly improved the quality of present day intraocular lenses, but there is continued interest in simulating the optics of the human crystalline *** will discuss the optical requirements of intraocular lenses and how these are influenced by optic design and dimension, and spectral transmission characteristics.

Geographic patterns in body size are often associated with latitude,elevation,or environmental and climatic *** study investigated patterns of body size and cell size of the green anole lizard,Anolis carolinensis,and potential associations with geography or climatic *** were sampled from 19 populations across the native range,and body size,red blood cell size and size and number of muscle cells were *** data from local weather stations and latitude and longitude were entered into model selection with Akaike’s information criterion to explain patterns in cell and body *** variables did not drive any major patterns in cell size or body size;rather,latitude and longitude were the best predictors of cell and body *** general,smaller body and cell sizes in Florida anoles drove geographic patterns in *** size in Florida may be attributable to�q�the�geological history of the peninsular state or�the�unique ecological factors in this area,including a recently introduced *** contrast to previous studies,we found that *** does not follow Bergmann’s rule when the influence of Florida is ***,the opposite pattern of larger lizards in southern populations is evident in the absence of Florida populations,and mirrors the general pattern in *** cell size was negatively related to latitude and red blood cell size showed no latitudinal trend outside of *** patterns in the sizes of the 2 cell types confirm the importance of examining multiple cell types when studying geographic variation in cell size.

Amyloidosis is commonly systemic,occasionally organlimited,and rarely a solitary localized *** latter,commonly referred to as tumoral amyloidosis,is described as occurring in nearly every organ/*** a few reports of gastric amyloidosis exist *** describe a 72 year-old black male from Barbados presenting with 3 d of diffuse abdominal *** medical history included Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma diagnosed five years ago,status-post six rounds of cyclophosphamide,adriamycin,vincristine,prednisone chemotherapy,and currently was in *** computed tomography scan of the abdomen,thickening and calcification of the gastric wall was noted along with *** esophagogastroduodenoscopy,a large circumferential friable mass was seen from the gastroesophageal junction to the body.A large nonbleeding 3 cm polyp was also seen in post bulbar area of *** were stained with Congo red and gave green birefringence under polarized light,consistent with tumoral *** emission tomography scan revealed diffuse gastric mucosa uptake compatible with gastric malignancy without metastatic *** for gastric amyloidomas has presently been one of observation or,at most,resection of the amyloid *** is not known if our patient required the same approach or if this warranted the re-institutionof chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin's *** more reports of tumoral amyloidosis are made known,treatment as well as prognosis remain uncertain.

All three components of the current density are required to compute the heating rate due to free magnetic energy *** we present a first test of a new model developed to determine if the times of increases in the resistive heating rate in active region(AR)photospheres are correlated with the subsequent occurrence of M and X flares in the corona.A data driven,3d,non-force-free magnetohydrodynamic model restricted to the near-photospheric region is used to compute time series of the complete current density and the resistive heating rate per unit volume[Q(t)]in each pixel in neutral line regions(NLRs)of 14 *** model is driven by time series of the magnetic field B measured by the Helioseismic&Magnetic Imager on the Solar dynamics Observatory(SdO)*** doppler periods due to SdO orbital motion are filtered out of the time series for B in every AR *** each AR,the cumulative distribution function(CdF)of the values of the NLR area integral Qi(t)of Q(t)is found to be a scale invariant power law distribution essentially identical to the observed CdF for the total energy released in coronal *** suggests that coronal flares and the photospheric Qi are correlated,and powered by the same *** model predicts spikes in Qi with values orders of magnitude above background *** spikes are driven by spikes in the non-force free component of the current *** times of these spikes are plausibly correlated with times of subsequent M or X flares a few hours to a few days *** spikes occur on granulation scales,and may be signatures of heating in horizontal current *** is also found that the times of relatively large values of the rate of change of the NLR unsigned magnetic flux are also plausibly correlated with the times of subsequent M and X flares,and spikes in Qi.

Iris du Pré, a professional pianist, wanted a second child, did not conceive quickly and was injected in 1944 by a doctor in Oxford with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG). The doctor joked “This child will be a racehorse winner!” In January 1945, Jacqueline du Pré, the remarkable, world-famous cellist was born. In the 1920's and 1930's, animal experimentation and clinical studies had shown that pituitary glycoproteins stimulated the ovary (follicle-stimulating hormone, FSH) and the corpus luteum (luteal-stimulating hormone, LH) which prepared the human womb for embedding a fertilized ovum and that pregnant mare’s blood and urine contained the glycoprotein, PMSG whose origin was placental cells, but surprisingly in humans had the actions of both FSH and LH. However, the PMSG serum alone did not bring about pregnancy. The doctor did not know that without subsequent injection of another factor in correct sequence and timing, PMSG was pointless. In 1947, a placental glycoprotein, found in the 1920's in urine of pregnant women (human chorionic gonadotropin, hCG), when injected in mice subsequent to PMSG, achieved ovulation but not pregnancy. Human application of those findings was extremely risky due to impurities (up to 95%). The Federal drug Administration (FdA), established in 1938, requested easily bye-passed marketing safety. Companies offered material “sufficiently” purified;professional bodies negated clinical use, tempting to a few. Evidence also suggests that, to sustain pregnancy the doctor also prescribed the new “eostrogen”, diethyl stilbestrol (dES) of negative fame. In 1947, the Nuremberg Code of ethics demanded human experiments by qualified personnel and trials preceded by adequate animal studies. It is not the case here. From five, du Pré had a most exceptional musical memory, almost obsessive musicality and a very difficult school-time socially. Additively manufactured Ti–Ta–Cu alloys for the next-generation load-bearing implants

Bacterial colonization of orthopedic implants is one of the leading causes of failure and clinical complexities for load-bearing metallic implants. Topical or systemic administration of antibiotics may not offer the most efficient defense against colonization, especially in the case of secondary infection, leading to surgical removal of implants and in some cases even limbs. In this study, laser powder bed fusion was implemented to fabricate Ti3Al2V alloy by a 1:1 weight mixture of CpTi and Ti6Al4V powders. Ti-Tantalum(Ta)–Copper(Cu) alloys were further analyzed by the addition of Ta and Cu into the Ti3Al2V custom alloy. The biological,mechanical, and tribo-biocorrosion properties of Ti3Al2V alloy were evaluated. A 10 wt.% Ta(10Ta) and 3 wt.% Cu(3Cu) were added to the Ti3Al2V alloy to enhance biocompatibility and impart inherent bacterial resistance. Additively manufactured implants were investigated for resistance against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus strains of bacteria for up to 48 h. A 3 wt.% Cu addition to Ti3Al2V displayed improved antibacterial efficacy, i.e.78%–86% with respect to CpTi. Mechanical properties for Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy were evaluated, demonstrating excellent fatigue resistance, exceptional shear strength, and improved tribological and tribo-biocorrosion characteristics when compared to Ti6Al4V. In vivo studies using a rat distal femur model revealed improved early-stage osseointegration for alloys with10 wt.% Ta addition compared to CpTi and Ti6Al4V. The 3 wt.% Cu-added compositions displayed biocompatibility and no adverse infammatory response in vivo. Our results establish the Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy’s synergistic effect on improving both in vivo biocompatibility and microbial resistance for the next generation of load-bearing metallic implants.

在温室环境控制问题中,传统的控制方法追求精确的点目标控制,而精确的控制精度是以高的能量消耗为代价的。针对温室环境控制这一实际问题,采用多目标相容控制算法来进行控制。因为在相容控制算法中点控制目标被放宽到区间内,所以有很大的余地来协调控制精度和能耗。为了满足相容控制算法在控制过程中节能偏好的需要,对遗传算法进行了改进,把节能这一偏好信息引入到了优化过程中、参与进化寻优。通过对经典温室模型仿真,验证了新算法在节能降耗方面的优势。

An unusual presentation of primary sclerosing cholangitis

This case report describes the unusual presentation of a patient who had findings which were initially suggestive of a type Ⅳ choledochal cyst. Her liver biopsy demonstrated biliary cirrhosis. She was treated with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and biliary stent exchanges over one year. Her cholangiogram one year later demonstrated resolution of the biliary cystic dilation which led to her initial diagnosis, with beading and stricturing of the hepatic ducts consistent with primary sclerosing cholangitis. Liver-associated enzymes and physical findings also improved. A liver biopsy one year later demonstrated a marked improvement in hepatic fibrosis with no evidence of cirrhosis.
