Agronomic treatments combined with embryo rescue for rapid generation advancement in tomato speed breeding

Unlike other major crops,little research has been performed on tomato to reduce the generation time for speed *** evaluated several agronomic treatments to reduce the generation time of tomato in the‘M82'(determinate)and‘Moneymaker'(indeterminate)varieties and evaluated the best combination in conjunction with embryo *** container sizes with volumes of 0.2 L(XS),0.45 L(S),0.8 L(M),1.3 L(L),and6 L(XL),were evaluated in the first experiment under the autumn *** found that plants grown in XL containers exhibited better development and required less time from sowing to anthesis(dSA)and from anthesis to fruit ripening(dAR).In the second experiment,using XL containers in the autumn-winter cycle,we evaluated the effects of cold priming at the cotyledonary stage,water stress,P supplementation,and K supplementation on generation *** to the control,we found that cold priming significantly reduced the number of leaves,plant height to first the inflorescence,and dSA(2.7 d),whereas K supplementation reduced the dAR(8.8 d).In contrast,water stress and P supplementation did not significantly affect any of the measured traits like dAR,dSA or fruit *** validate these data,in a third experiment with XL containers in the spring-summer cycle,the combination of cold priming and K supplementation was tested,confirming the significant effect of this combination on the reduction of generation time(2.9 d for dSA and 3.9 d for dAR)compared to the *** rescue during the cell expansion cycle(average of 22.0 d and 23.3 d after anthesis for‘M82'and‘Moneymaker',respectively)allowed the shortening of the generation time by 8.7 d in‘M82'and 11.6 d in‘Moneymaker'compared to the in planta fruit *** combination of agronomic treatments with embryo rescue can effectively increase the number of generations per year from three to four for speed breeding of tomato.

Advancing CLIL Approaches in EMI Settings Through International Collaboration: An Introduction

CLIL, which stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning, is an instructional approach that gives ample curricular and pedagogical attention to content and language outcomes in multilingual educational settings. Increasingly, it is heralded as a way to responsibly enact top-down English-Medium-of-Instruction (EMI) policies at the university level, where teachers and students are tasked with developing their English proficiency while remaining competitive in the international job market. However, teachers and teacher educators hoping to implement this approach in their science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) content courses face significant challenges. This article serves as an introduction to a guest-edited special issue that reports on several aspects related to a project of international collaboration called Project SCILLA, an acronym for “STEM Content Integrated with Language-Learning Activities”. We first provide a brief overview of the project, which was developed and carried out in collaboration between Michigan State University and a consortium of 10 rural universities in Kazakhstan as a way to support STEM educators who wish to adapt their teaching practices to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Education. We then offer an overview of the six articles that comprise the special issue, and call for deliberate and dialogic international collaboration as a way to support teachers responding to language policy demands.

Rethinking the solar flare paradigm

It is widely accepted that solar flares involve release of magnetic energy stored in the solar corona above an active region, but existing models do not include the explicitly time-dependent electrodynamics needed to describe such energy release. A flare paradigm is discussed that includes the electromotive force （EMF） as the driver of the flare, and the flare-associated current that links different regions where magnetic reconnection, electron acceleration, the acceleration of mass motions and current closure occur. The EMF becomes localized across regions where energy conversion occurs, and is involved in energy propagation between these regions.

Parallel Perturbed Gauss-Newton State Estimator Based on Fortescue Transformation for Unbalanced Power Systems

This letter extends the complex-variable perturbed Gauss-Newton method to estimate the state of unbalanced power systems by exploiting the Fortescue *** proposes a novel and efficient graph-based way to deal with singularities due to zero-sequence network parts bounded with delta transformer windings and isolated from the *** estimator can handle both phasor and complex power *** with the standard complex-variable unbalanced state estimator,it achieves better numerical stability and a speed-up of around three times using a sequential implementation and five times using parallel execution.

Inverse Optimal Control of Evolution Systems and Its Application to Extensible and Shearable Slender Beams

An optimal(practical) stabilization problem is formulated in an inverse approach and solved for nonlinear evolution systems in Hilbert spaces. The optimal control design ensures global well-posedness and global practical K∞-exponential stability of the closed-loop system, minimizes a cost functional,which appropriately penalizes both state and control in the sense that it is positive definite(and radially unbounded) in the state and control, without having to solve a Hamilton-Jacobi-Belman equation(HJBE). The Lyapunov functional used in the control design explicitly solves a family of HJBEs. The results are applied to design inverse optimal boundary stabilization control laws for extensible and shearable slender beams governed by fully nonlinear partial differential equations.

Cyclic loading of marble:Correlating the attenuation of the electric and acoustic activities and highlighting criticality indices in terms of natural time

The attenuation of the acoustic activity in marble specimens under uniaxial compressive loadingunloading loops is quantified in juxtaposition to that of the electric activity. In parallel, the existence of ‘‘pre-failure indiceso warning about entrance into a critical stage, that of impending fracture, is explored. The acoustic activity is quantified in terms of the normalized number of acoustic hits, their average rate of production and their cumulative energy, and, the cumulative counts and their average rate of change. The electric activity is studied in terms of the pressure stimulated currents and the electric charge released. The analysis revealed that the acoustic and electric activities are linearly correlated to each other, suggesting that they are different manifestations of the same damage mechanisms. In addition, Kaiser's effect, governing the acoustic activity, is found to govern, also, the electric ***, it is concluded that entrance into the critical stage is safely predicted by means of a simple criterion, based on the evolution of the average rate of change of the normalized cumulative counts in the natural time domain. These predictions are almost identical with those of the criterion based on the‘‘varianceo and the ‘‘entropieso of the time series of acoustic events in this domain.

Motion of a spherical particle in a fluid forced vortex by dQM and dTM

In this study, coupled equations of the motion of a particle in a fluid forced vortex were investigated using the differential transformation method （dTM） with the Pad6 approximation and the differential quadrature method （dO_M）. The significant contribution of the work is the introduction of two new, fast and efficient solutions for a spherical particle in a forced vortex that are improvements over the previous numerical results in the literature. These methods represent approximations with a high degree of accuracy and minimal computational effort for studying the particle motion in a fluid forced vortex. In addition, the velocity profiles （angular and radial） and the position trajectory of a particle in a fluid forced vortex are described in the current study.

Representation of the quantum mechanical wavefunction by orthogonal polynomials in the energy and physical parameters

We present a formulation of quantum mechanics based on the theory of orthogonal *** wavefunction is expanded over a complete set of square integrable basis where the expansion coefficients are orthogonal polynomials in the energy and physical *** about the corresponding physical systems(both structural and dynamical)are derived from the properties of these *** demonstrate that an advantage of this formulation is that the class of exactly solvable quantum mechanical problems becomes larger than in the conventional formulation(see,for example,table 3 in the text).We limit our investigation in this work to the Askey classification scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials and focus on the Wilson polynomial and two of its limiting cases(the Meixner–Pollaczek and continuous dual Hahn polynomials).Nonetheless,the formulation is amenable to other classes of orthogonal polynomials.

Nonlinear thermo-mechanical stability of eccentrically stiffened functionally graded material sandwich doubly curved shallow shells with general sigmoid law and power law according to third-order shear deformation theory

In this paper, the nonlinear analysis of stability of functionally graded ma- terial （FGM） sandwich doubly curved shallow shells is studied under thermo-mechanical loads with material properties obeying the general sigmoid law and power law of four ma- terial models. Shells are reinforced by the FGM stiffeners and rest on elastic foundations. Theoretical formulations are derived by the third-order shear deformation theory （TSdT） with the von Karman-type nonlinearity taking into account the initial geometrical im- perfection and smeared stiffener technique. The explicit expressions for determining the critical buckling load and the post-buckling mechanical and thermal load-deflection curves are obtained by the Galerkin method. Two iterative algorithms are presented. The effects of the stiffeners, the thermal element, the distribution law of material, the initial imper- fection, the foundation, and the geometrical parameters on buckling and post-buckling of shells are investigated.
