Investigation of kinetics in bioaugmentation of crude oil via high-throughput sequencing: Enzymatic activities, bacterial community composition and functions

The enzymes and the characteristics of the community of the petroleum-degrading bacteria play a crucial role in the crude oil biodegradation. The prediction of kinetics of the key groups of hydrocarbons in crude oil was important to evaluate the bioremediation speed and constant. Most of the n-alkanes(C9-C29) were degraded in 25 days, and the average degradation rates of C_(18)~C_(27) higher than 100 μg g^(-1) d^(-1).The hopanes, such as H_(30), had a biodegradation rate more than 10 μg g^(-1) d^(-1). The related enzymes activities changed along with the crude oil biodegradation, especially dehydrogenase. The 16 S rRnA gene amplicon sequencing revealed that Proteobacteria, Firmcutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria were the main petroleum hydrocarbon degraders during the crude oil biodegradation, and the top two highest relative abundance of the genera were Alcaligenes and Acinetobacter. Acinetobacter presented positive correlation to biodegradation of n-alkanes and PAHs. Based on COG analysis, the largest group involved in the general function was amino acid transport and metabolism. The functional categories of bacterial communities were mainly focused on the carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism, membrane transport, and so on. Overall, these findings highlight the potential guideline for more adequate monitoring of microbial degradation of crude oil.

The effect of temperature on the electrical conductivity(σ)and Seebeck coefficient(S)of n-type vapor grown carbon nanofibers(CnFs)and poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVdF)melt-mixed with 15 wt%of those CnFs is *** 40°C,the CnFs show stable n-type character(S=-4.8μV·K^(-1))with anσof ca.165 S·m^(-1),while the PVdF/CnF composite film shows anσof ca.9 S·m^(-1)and near-zero S(S=-0.5μV·K^(-1)).This experimental reduction in S is studied by the density functional tight binding(dFTB)method revealing a contact electron transfer from the CnFs to the PVdF in the ***,in the temperature range from 40°C to 100°C,theσ(T)of the CnFs and PVdF/CnF film,successfully described by the 3d variable range hopping(VRH)model,is explained as consequence of a thermally activated backscattering *** the contrary,the S(T)from 40°C to 100°C of the PVdF/CnF film,which satisfactorily matches the model proposed for some multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWCnT)doped mats;however,it does not follow the increase in S(T)found for *** these findings are presented with the aim of discerning the role of these n-type vapor grown carbon nanofibers on theσand S of their melt-mixed polymer composites.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tnGCs). However, the use of tnGCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tnGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tnGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tnGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tnGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tnGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tnGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tnGCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tnGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Structural and mass transport properties of liquid ytterbium in the temperature range 1123 K–1473 K

We have studied the structural and atomic transport properties of liquid f-shell Yb in the temperature range 1123 K–1473 K. Pair interactions between atoms are derived using a local pseudopotential. The potential parameters are fitted to the phonon dispersion curve at room temperature. The local pseudopotential used in the present study is computationally more efficient with only three parameters, and it is found to be transferable to the liquid phase without changing the *** the various computed properties agree with reported theoretical and experimental findings, the adopted fitting scheme is justified. As a significant outcome of the study, we find that(i) the melting in Yb is governed by the Lindemann's law,(ii)the mass transport mechanism obeys the Arrhenius law,(iii) the role of the three-particle correlation function in deriving the velocity autocorrelation function is small,(iv) the mean-square atomic displacement is more sensitive to the choice of interaction potential than the other bulk properties, and(v) liquid Yb does not show liquid–liquid phase transition within the studied temperature range. Further, due to the good description of the structural and mass transport properties, we propose that Yb remains divalent at reduced density.

Effects of Periodically Inhomogeneous Birefringence on dark-Bright Vector Soliton Propagation and Interaction

The effects of periodically inhomogeneous birefringence on dark-bright vector soliton propagation and interaction are investigated by the numerical method. The birefringence leads to the submergence of the dark soliton and the disintegration of the bright soliton, and enhances the interaction between the neighbouring solitons. The system performance is determined by the bright soliton because the dark soliton has robust features. Finally, the avoidance and the effective control are introduced, and the controlling mechanism is demonstrated.
