Non-starch Polysaccharide degrading Enzymes in Corn and Wheat-Based Broiler diets： dual Activity for Major Substrates

This study consolidates the efficacy of a non-starch polysaccharide （NSP）ase enzyme-concept in corn and wheat-based broiler diets. The NSP building blocks of corn, wheat and soybean meal （SBM, 44% protein） were studied first. Cereal NSP primarily consists of arabinose, xylose and glucose molecules that form arabinoxylan, β-glucan and cellulose polysaccharides. In soybean meal （SBM）, glucose （cellulose） predominates, next to galactose and uronic acids that form “pectins”. Broiler performance progress using in-feed NSPase enzymes depends on the concentration, complexity and solubility of the substrate and the genetic potential of the animal, mainly. A dual NSPase enzyme-concept for cereal and SBM NSP, predominantly being arabinoxylan, β-glucan and cellulose, was developed. Methods for measuring enzyme activities （endo-1,4-β-xylanase （EC 3.***.1.8） and endo-1,3（4）-β-glucanase （EC 3.***.1.6）） were developed （AVEVE Biochem UNITS） and preparations thereof （XG） standardized to meet requirements for most challenging NSP （corn, barely soluble）. Feed intake （FI）, bodyweight gain （BWG） and feed：gain ratio （F：G） were assessed in three zootechnical studies, each using 160 Ross 308 broilers split in two feeding groups with 80 birds/group （10 replicates of eight） for 42 d （starter/grower period）. Respective corn-SBM, wheat-SBM and corn/wheat-SBM diets were used as negative control （NC） or added with the enzyme-concept （XG）. In the total period, XG ameliorated BWG and F：G compared to NC in each study, where BWG increased best in diets with corn and F：G lowered most in diets with wheat. The dual NSPase enzyme-concept offers ingredient flexibility in present setting by enhancing the nutritional content of corn, wheat and SBM, expectedly from cleaving major NSP target molecules. Thereby, broiler professionals increase feed formulation liberty and safety and production result simultaneously.

The Mormon cricket (MC),Anabrus simplex (Orthoptera:Tettigoniidae),has a long and negative history with agriculture in the western states of the USA where MC often migrates in large groups and causes significant damage to forage plants and cultivated *** this review, virulence to MC of isolates of the insect-pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae varieties acridum and anisopliae were compared in an effort to identify isolates with promise for use as MC biological control *** of the isolates tested induced 100% or nearly 100% mortality by six days post application of the fungal *** for new Metarhizium isolates with high heat and UV-B tolerance included isolation fungi from field-caught MC and grasshopper after they died in the laboratory and culturing fungi from soil samples collected from numerous western USA *** survey was preceded by development of a dodine based selective medium that,at 0.002% active ingredient,permitted growth of *** ***,but inhibited most contaminating *** *** *** isolates examined to date have much higher tolerance to heat and UV-B irradiation than *** *** isolates,and this may be critical to successful field *** variety acridum has not yet been found in the USA,so our search for such isolates *** new *** *** and Beauveria *** found,and the Metarhizium isolates are being characterized as to stress tolerance and virulence to *** includes comparisons of new and pre-existing Metarhizium isolates by amplified fragment-length polymorphism (AFLP) ***, experiments on MC developmental biology were conducted to gather data needed to develop a degree day model and to establish laboratory colonies of MC.

Background: A number of studies found that patients with multiple sclerosis (M S) have low serum levels of uric acid. It is unclear whether this represents a p rimary deficit or secondary effect. Uric acid is a scavenger of peroxynitrite, w hich is the product of nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide. Because peripheral bloo d leukocyte NO production and NO metabolites in serum are raised in MS patients, associations might be expected between serum uric acid levels and peripheral NO ***: Serum levels of uric acid and NO production by peripheral b lood leukocytes were measured in 60 patients with MS without a relapse in the pa st 3 months, and 30 age-and sexmatched healthy controls. Uric acid was determin ed with the uricase PAP method, and NO production was assayed by measuring nitri te concentration in supernatants of lysed ***: Serum uric acid le vels were not different between MS patients and controls. Compared to controls, patients with MS had significantly higher peripheral blood leukocytes nitrite co ncentrations (p d serumuric acid levels. Conclusions:Our findings suggest that in M S patients there is no primary deficit in serum uric acid. NO production by peri pheral blood leukocytes is increased, but there is no association with serum uri c acid levels.

Clinical significance of mesenteric panniculitis-like abnormalities on abdominal computerized tomography in patients with malignant neoplasms

AIM To clarify the association of malignancy with mesenteric panniculitis-like changes on computed tomography(CT).METHOdS All abdominal CT scans performed at North Shore University HealthS ystem showing mesenteric panniculitis from January 2005 to August 2010 were identified in the Radnet(Rad Net Corporation, Los Angeles, CA) database. Patients with a new or known diagnosis of a malignancy were included for this analysis. Longitudinal clinical histories were obtained from electronic medical *** In total, 147794 abdominal CT scans were performed during the study period. Three hundred and fiftynine patients had mesenteric panniculitis(MP)-like abnormalities on their abdominal CT. Of these patients, 81 patients(22.6%) had a known history of cancer at the time of their CT scan. Nineteen(5.3%) had a new diagnosis of cancer in concurrence with their CT, but the majority of these(14/19, 74%) were undergoing CT as part of a malignancy evaluation. Lymphomas were the most common cancers associated with MPlike findings on CT(36 cases, 36%), with follicular lymphoma being the most frequent subtype(17/36). A variety of solid tumors, most commonly prostate(7) and renal cell cancers(6) also were seen. CT follow up was obtained in 56 patients. Findings in the mesentery were unchanged in 45(80%), worsened in 6(11%), and improved in 5 patients(9%). Positron emission tomography(PET) scans performed in 44 patients only showed a positive uptake in the mesenteric mass in 2 patients(5%). CONCLUSION A new diagnosis of cancer is uncommon in patients with CT findings suggestive of MP. MP-like mesenteric abnormalities on CT generally remain stable in patients with associated malignancies. PET scanning is not recommended in the evaluation of patients with mesenteric panniculitis-like findings on CT.
