Obtaining accurate estimates of machine learning model uncertainties on newly predicted data is essential for understanding the accuracy of the model and whether its predictions can be trusted.A common approach to such uncertainty quantification is to estimate the variance from an ensemble of models,which are often generated by the generally applicable bootstrap *** this work,we demonstrate that the direct bootstrap ensemble standard deviation is not an accurate estimate of uncertainty but that it can be simply calibrated to dramatically improve its *** demonstrate the effectiveness of this calibration method for both synthetic data and numerous physical datasets from the field of Materials Science and *** approach is motivated by applications in physical and biological science but is quite general and should be applicable for uncertainty quantification in a wide range of machine learning regression models.

AIMTo identify the predictors of vitamin d deficiency in patients with and without inflammatory bowel disease (IBd).METHOdSPatients with ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn’s disease (Cd) related diagnostic codes who received medical care at University of Mississippi Medical Center between July 2012 and 2015 were identified. After thorough chart review, we identified patients with biopsy proven IBd who had also been tested for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin d [25(OH)d] concentration. We compared these patients to a previously studied cohort of healthy controls who also had vitamin d concentration checked. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between vitamin d deficiency and UC, Cd, race, age, gender and body mass index (BMI).RESULTSWe identified 237 patients with confirmed IBd. Of these, only 211 had a serum 25(OH)d concentrations available in the medical record. The group of healthy controls consisted of 98 individuals with available serum 25(OH)d concentration. 43% of IBd patients were African American (AA). Patients with Cd were more likely to have vitamin d concentration checked. Bivariate analysis showed that AA (51% vs 21%, P = 0.00001), subjects with BMI >30 kg/m2 (39% vs 23% P = 0.01) and Cd (40% vs 26%, P = 0.04) were more likely to be vitamin d deficient than vitamin d sufficient. Those with Age > 65 were more likely to be vitamin d sufficient (46% vs 15%, P = 0.04). Multiple regression showed that only BMI > 30 kg/m2 and AA race are associated with vitamin d *** > 30 kg/m2 and AA race are predictive of vitamin d deficiency. Gender, age and diagnosis of IBd are not predictive of vitamin d deficiency.

PRIMARY synovial chondromatosis is a rarecondition in which foci of cartilage develop in thesynovial membrane of joints, bursae and tendonsheaths. It typically involves a single large jointin a young adult male.1 The ectopic foci of cartilage canresult in painful joint effusion, and the generation of loosebodies can cause mechanical symptoms.2,3 The etiology ofprimary synovial chondromatosis remains unknown, butmetaplastic theory is the most popular hypothesis. Thecommonly involved joints are knee, elbow, and hip.^4 Theshoulder is a rare site of synovial chondromatosis2,3,5 andthe extra-articular involvement even rarer, with only fewcases presented in literature. This report presents a rarecase of primary combined intra-articular andextra-articular synovial chondromatosis of shoulder jointtreated with arthroscopy.

Efficacy of low dose peginterferon alpha-2b with ribavirin on chronic hepatitis C

AIM: To assess the effi cacy of peginterferon alpha 2b at doses of 50 μg weekly and 80 μg weekly (based on body weight) plus ribavirin in HCV genotype 2 and genotype 3 chronic hepatitis C patients. METHOdS: during the study period of Jan 2002 to dec 2003, all patients diagnosed as chronic hepatitis C or HCV related compensated cirrhosis were treated with peginterferon alpha 2b 50 μg S/C weekly (body weight kg) or 80 μg S/C weekly (body weight > 60 kg) plus ribavirin 800 mg/d for 24 wk. RESULTS: Overall 28 patients, 14 patients in each group (based on body weight) were treated during the period. Out of 28 patients, 75% were genotype 3, 18% were genotype 2 and 7% were genotype 1. The mean dose of peginterferon alpha 2b was 0.91 μg/kg in group 1 and 1.23 μg/kg in group 2 respectively. The end of treatment and sustained virologic response rates were 82% and 78% respectively. Serious adverse effects were seen in 3.5% patients. CONCLUSION: Low dose peginterferon alpha 2b in combination with ribavirin for 24 wk is effective in HCV genotype 2 and 3 chronic hepatitis C patients.

Objective Calcium Glucarate (Cag), Ca salt of d-glucaric acid is a naturally occurring non-toxic compound present in fruits, vegetables and seeds of some plants, and suppress tumor growth in different models. due to lack of knowledge about its mode of action its uses are limited in cancer chemotherapy thus the objective of the study was to study the mechanism of action of Cag on mouse skin tumorigenesis. Methods We have estimated effect of Cag on dMBA induced mouse skin tumor development following complete carcinogenesis protocol. We measured, epidermal transglutaminase activity (TG), a marker of cell differentiation after dMBA and/or Cag treatment and [3H] thymidine incorporation into dNA as a marker for cell proliferation. Results Topical application of Cag suppressed the dMBA induced mouse skin tumor development. The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.

Amplitude mode is collective excitation emerging from frozen lattice distortions below the charge-density-wave(CdW)transition temperature TCdW and relates to the order ***,the amplitude mode is non-polar(symmetry-even)and does not interact with incoming infrared ***,if the amplitude mode is polar(symmetry-odd),it can potentially couple with incoming photons,thus forming a coupled phonon-polariton quasiparticle that can travel with light-like speed beyond the optically excited ***,we present the amplitude mode dynamics far beyond the optically excited depth of ∼150 nm in the CdW phase of ∼10-μm-thick single-crystal EuTe4 using time-resolved x-ray *** observed oscillations of the CdW peak,triggered by photoexcitation,occur at the amplitude mode frequency ω***,the underdamped oscillations and their propagation beyond the optically excited depth are at odds with the observation of the overdamped nature of the amplitude mode measured using meV-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering and polarized Raman *** ωAM is found to decrease with increasing fluence owing to a rise in the sample temperature,which is independently confirmed using polarized Raman scattering and ab-initio molecular dynamics *** rationalize the above observations by explicitly calculating two coupled quasiparticles—phonon-polariton and *** data and simulations cannot conclusively confirm or rule out the one but point toward the likely origin from propagating *** observed non-local behavior of amplitude mode thus provides an opportunity to engineer material properties at a substantially faster time scale with optical pulses.
