Maintenance of an abrupt boundary between needle-leaved and broad-leaved forests in a wetland near coast

There is an abrupt boundary between two well-developed wetland forests, a stand consisting of a broad-leaved, nitrogen-fixer Alnusjaponica and a stand of the needle-leaved Picea glehnii Masters, in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. To clarify maintenance mechanisms, we studied the forest profile, water level, groundwater and precipitation chemistry, seedling establishment patterns in relation to microhabitats, and seed migration. The profile of groundwater level insufficiently explained the abrupt boundary formation, while the groundwater chemistry differed significantly between the two forests ; i.e., EC, Na^＋, K^＋, Mg^2＋, Ca^2＋ and Cl^- were higher in P. glehnii forest and pH was lower. Precipitation in P. glehnii forest contained richer Na＋, Ca^2＋ and Cl^-, indicating that the differences in surface-water chemistry were mostly derived from precipitation. Solar radiation was less than 2.2 MJ.m^-2.d^-1 on P. glehnii forest in late June, while that was patchily distributed in *** forest with a range from 1.0 to 3.7 MJ＇m^-2＇d^-1. Moss cover on the soil surface, most of which were made of Sphagnum spp., was 60% in P. glehnii forest, but was 10% in A. japonica forest. Surface water chemistry represented by pH was considered to determine the development of Sphagnum moss. About 70% of P. glehnii seedlings 〈 1.3 m in height established on moss cover. Seed-sowing experiments suggested that seed germination and seedling survival for both species were significantly higher in P. glehnii forest. Therefore, the regeneration of P. glehnii in A. japonica forest was negligible, owing to the paucity of favorable microhabitats and low seedling establishment. A. japonica regenerated only by resprouting, and the seedlings were few in both forests. In addition, A. japonica seed migration into the P. glehnii forests was greatly restricted, and low solar radiation in the P. glehnii forest contributed to low seedling survival. BACKGROUNd The selection of endoscopic treatments for superficial non-ampullary duodenal epithelial tumors(SNAdETs)is *** To compare the efficacy and safety of endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR)and endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESd)for *** We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients with SNAdETs from a database of endoscopic treatment for SNAdETs,which included eight hospitals in Fukuoka,Japan,between April 2001 and October 2017.A total of 142 patients with SNAdETs treated with EMR or ESd were *** score matching was performed to adjust for the differences in the patient characteristics between the two *** analyzed the treatment outcomes,including the rates of en bloc/complete resection,procedure time,adverse event rate,hospital stay,and local or metastatic *** Twenty-eight pairs of patients were *** characteristics of patients between the two groups were similar after *** EMR group had a significantly shorter procedure time and hospital stay than those of the ESd group[median procedure time(interquartile range):6(3-10.75)min vs 87.5(68.5-136.5)min,Pd vs 11(8.25-14.75)d,P=0.006].Other outcomes were not significantly different between the two groups(en bloc resection rate:82.1%vs 92.9%,P=0.42;complete resection rate:71.4%vs 89.3%,P=0.18;and adverse event rate:3.6%vs 17.9%,P=0.19,local recurrence rate:3.6%vs 0%,P=1;metastatic recurrence rate:0%in both).Only one patient in the ESd group underwent emergency surgery owing to intraoperative *** EMR has significantly shorter procedure time and hospital stay than ESd,and provides acceptable curability and safety compared to ***,EMR for SNAdETs is associated with lower medical costs.

Continued diagnostic difficulties in Preoperatively differentiating Lipiodized Oil and Residual Metallic Material: A Case Report

Retained foreign objects in the abdomen and pelvis are serious clinical problems yet the imaging required can present difficulties. Prolonged retention of lipiodized oil used for hysterosalpingography over years is very rare. However, lipiodized oil had previously been misdiagnosed as residual metallic material. We are reporting a case in which the latest computed tomography (CT) equipment seemed inadequate for obtaining a clear pre-operative diagnosis. Here, we describe the case of a 33-year-old Japanese female whose pelvis had contained retained lipiodized oil that had been suspected as residual metallic material. The preoperative diagnosis was very difficult and included three-dimensional computed tomography (3d-CT) of unclear results despite expectations of resolution. By laparoscopic surgery, we removed a cyst of approximately 2 cm containing a yellowish oily fluid. Postoperatively, we demonstrated that the fluid was lipiodized oil. A postoperative experiment to attempt distinguishing lipiodized oil from metal through gemstone spectral CT imaging did not offer clarity either. distinguishing between retained lipiodized oil and metallic material in the abdominal cavity may still present unexpected difficulties even with the latest medical equipments.
