Bacterial colonization of orthopedic implants is one of the leading causes of failure and clinical complexities for load-bearing metallic implants. Topical or systemic administration of antibiotics may not offer the most efficient defense against colonization, especially in the case of secondary infection, leading to surgical removal of implants and in some cases even limbs. In this study, laser powder bed fusion was implemented to fabricate Ti3Al2V alloy by a 1:1 weight mixture of CpTi and Ti6Al4V powders. Ti-Tantalum(Ta)–Copper(Cu) alloys were further analyzed by the addition of Ta and Cu into the Ti3Al2V custom alloy. The biological,mechanical, and tribo-biocorrosion properties of Ti3Al2V alloy were evaluated. A 10 wt.% Ta(10Ta) and 3 wt.% Cu(3Cu) were added to the Ti3Al2V alloy to enhance biocompatibility and impart inherent bacterial resistance. Additively manufactured implants were investigated for resistance against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus strains of bacteria for up to 48 h. A 3 wt.% Cu addition to Ti3Al2V displayed improved antibacterial efficacy, i.e.78%–86% with respect to CpTi. Mechanical properties for Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy were evaluated, demonstrating excellent fatigue resistance, exceptional shear strength, and improved tribological and tribo-biocorrosion characteristics when compared to Ti6Al4V. In vivo studies using a rat distal femur model revealed improved early-stage osseointegration for alloys with10 wt.% Ta addition compared to CpTi and Ti6Al4V. The 3 wt.% Cu-added compositions displayed biocompatibility and no adverse infammatory response in vivo. Our results establish the Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy’s synergistic effect on improving both in vivo biocompatibility and microbial resistance for the next generation of load-bearing metallic implants.

Tight focusing with very small f-numbers is necessary to achieve the highest at-focus ***,tight focusing imposes strong demands on precise target positioning in-focus to achieve the highest on-target irradiance We describe several near-infrared,visible,ultraviolet and soft and hard X-ray diagnostics employed in a~10^(22)W/cm^(2)laser±plasma *** used nearly 10 J total energy femtosecond laser pulses focused into an approximately1.3-μm focal spot on 5±20μm thick stainless-steel *** discuss the applicability of these diagnostics to determine the best in-focus target position with approximately 5μm accuracy(i.e.,around half of the short Rayleigh length)and show that several diagnostics(in particular,3ωreflection and on-axis hard X-rays)can ensure this *** demonstrated target positioning within several micrometers from the focus,ensuring over 80%of the ideal peak laser intensity *** approach is relatively fast(it requires 10±20 laser shots)and does not rely on the coincidence of low-power and high-power focal planes.

Powdery mildew is one of the major diseases of peach(Prunus persica),caused by the ascomycete Podosphaera ***,it is controlled through calendar-based fungicide treatments starting at petal fall,but an alternative is to develop resistant peach *** studies mapped a resistance gene(Vr3)in interspecific populations between almond(‘Texas’)and peach(‘Earlygold’).To obtain molecular markers highly linked to Vr3 and to reduce the number of candidate genes,we fine-mapped Vr3 to a genomic region of 270 kb with 27 annotated *** find evidence supporting one of these positional candidate genes as being responsible of Vr3,we analyzed the polymorphisms of the resequences of both parents and used near-isogenic lines(NILs)for expression analysis of the positional candidate genes in symptomatic or asymptomatic *** differentially expressed between resistant and susceptible individuals were annotated as a disease Resistance Protein RGA2(Prupe2G111700)or an Eceriferum 1 protein involved in epicuticular wax biosynthesis(Prupe2G112800).Only Prupe2G111700 contained a variant predicted to have a disruptive effect on the encoded protein,and was overexpressed in both heterozygous and homozygous individuals containing the Vr3 almond allele,compared with susceptible *** information was also useful to identify and validate molecular markers tightly linked and flanking *** addition,the NILs used in this work will facilitate the introgression of this gene into peach elite materials,alone or pyramided with other known resistance genes such as peach powdery mildew resistance gene Vr2.

Interactions between hydrokinetic turbines and near scale and far scale bed sediment particles are considered a critical area of assessment; however, a limited number of research studies have been published to address this issue. The current paper explores the influence of the blockage ratio on the morphology evolution downstream from a hydrokinetic turbine. A modeling framework is derived to predict the significant transport induced by a turbine installed on the erodible fluvial sandy bed surface,such as the Eulerian multi-phase model for the sediment and the Blade Element Momentum Theory(BEMT) for the turbine, using the open source platform OpenFOAM. Two configurations of different blockage ratios are considered. The configurations show differences in the bed morphology and the sediment transport. It has been shown for both configurations that the scour capabilities are enhanced below the turbine due to the acceleration of the flow and increasing local shear stress on the sediment.

Conversion-reaction induced charge storage mechanisms of transition metal sulphides have received considerable interest in designing high-capacity electrodes for electrochemical energy storage ***,their low conductivity and structural degradation during cycling limit their applications as energy storage devices.A combination of different nickel sulphide phases tailored with carbon nanostructures is suggested to address these ***,a facile,two-step approach is demonstrated for fabricating a hybrid electrode,consisting of trinickel disulphide(Ni_(3)S_(2))formed on a metallic Ni nanoparticle supported by vertical carbon nanotubes(VCN)backbone in the form Ni_(3)S_(2)/Ni@***_(3)S_(2)/Ni@VCN electrodes were tested as anode for lithium-ion batteries,and the electrode featured outstanding lithiumstorage capabilities with a high reversible capacity(1113 m Ah g^(-1) after 100 cycles at 100 m A g^(-1)),excellent long-term cycling stability(770 m Ah g^(-1) after 500 cycles at 200 m A g^(-1)),and good rate *** resulting electrode performance is one of the best Li-ion storage capabilities in the Ni_(3)S_(2)-type anode materials described.A unique “broccoli-like”structure of polycrystalline Ni_(3)S_(2)capped on conductive VCN backbone helps the interface storage process and boosts lithium storage performance.
