Use of a lyophilized bovine pericardium graft to repair tunical defect in patients with Peyronie＇s disease： experience in a clinical setting

Many different materials are available for grafting during surgery for Peyronie＇s disease （Pd）. To study the outcomes associated with the use of a lyophilized bovine pericardium graft （Peri-Guard） to repair tunical defects in patients with Pd, descriptive study of 43 patients with disabling penile curvature was performed. Curvature was measured before and after the intervention using a standardized procedure. Surgical technique was plaque excision and grafting of the tunical defect carried out by a single surgeon. A lyophilized bovine pericardium patch was used for grafting. We measured the change in penile curvature and length, the ability to perform successful sexual intercourse without further pharmacological or surgical treatment, and the satisfaction with treatment. Follow-up data were available for a total of 41 patients. Median age was 50 years （IQR 48-52）; mean follow-up time was 14 ± 6 months. Complete penile straightening was achieved in 33 patients （80.5%） and five patients （12.2%） had curvature under 20. Three months after surgery and stretching therapy, mean （s.d.） flaccid penile length increased from 11.2 ± 2.8 cm to 12.1 ± 2.9 cm （P = 0.062）. Seventy-five percentage of patients reported being able to achieve successful intercourse without further treatment. Eighty-five percentage of patients reported to be satisfied with the treatment. There was no evidence of tissue rejection or infection, and only four patients suffered an adverse event. Plaque excision and grafting of the tunical defect with lyophilized bovine pericardium seems to be a safe and effective treatment for patients with Pd.

Background： Sperm dNA fragmentation（sdF） has been proved to be an important parameter in order to predict in vitro the potential fertility of a semen sample. Colloid centrifugation could be a suitable technique to select those donkey sperm more resistant to dNA fragmentation after thawing. Previous studies have shown that to elucidate the latent damage of the dNA molecule, sdF should be assessed dynamically, where the rate of fragmentation between treatments indicates how resistant the dNA is to iatrogenic damage. The rate of fragmentation is calculated using the slope of a linear regression equation. However, it has not been studied if s dF dynamics fit this model. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of different after-thawing centrifugation protocols on sperm dNA fragmentation and elucidate the most accurate mathematical model（linear regression, exponential or polynomial） for dNA fragmentation over time in frozen-thawed donkey ***： After submitting post-thaw semen samples to no centrifugation（UdC）, sperm washing（SW） or single layer centrifugation（SLC） protocols, sd F values after 6 h of incubation were significantly lower in SLC samples than in SW or *** of determination（R-2） values were significantly higher for a second order polynomial model than for linear or exponential. The highest values for acceleration of fragmentation（aSdF） were obtained for SW, fol owed by SLC and ***： SLC after thawing seems to preserve longer dNA longevity in comparison to UdC and SW. Moreover,the fine-tuning of models has shown that sdF dynamics in frozen-thawed donkey semen fit a second order polynomial model, which implies that fragmentation rate is not constant and fragmentation acceleration must be taken into account to elucidate hidden damage in the dNA molecule.

Plant-pollinator in teractio ns have a fundame ntal in fluence on flower evolution. Flower color signals are frequently tuned to the visual capabilities of important pollinators such as either bees or birds, but far less is known about whether flower shape in fluences the choices of pollinators. We tested European honeybee Apis mellifera pref ere nces using novel achromatic (gray-scale) images of 12 insect-pollinated and 12 bird-pollinated native Australian flowers in Germany;thus, avoiding in flue nces of color, odor, or prior experie nee. In depende nt bees were tested with a number of parameterized images specifically desig ned to assess pref ere nces for size, shape, brightness, or the number of flower-like shapes prese nt in an image. We show that honeybees have a pref ere nee for visiti ng images of in sect-polli nated flowers and such a pref ere nee is most-likely mediated by holistic in formati on rather than by in dividual image parameters. Our results in dicate an giosperms have evolved flower shapes which in fluence the choice behavior of importa nt pollinators, and thus suggest spatial achromatic flower properties are an important part of visual signaling for plantpollinator in teractions.

Local Phase Portraits through the Newton diagram of a Vector Field

The Newton diagram and, in particular, the lowest-degree quasi-homogeneous terms of an analytic planar vector field allow us to determine the existence of characteristic orbits and separatrices of an isolated singular point. We give an easy algorithm for obtaining the local phase portrait near the origin of a bi-dimensional differential system and we provide several examples.

Maneuvering Angle Rigid Formations With Global Convergence Guarantees

AIM： To assess if the included vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） polymorphisms rs3025035, rs3025021 and rs2010963 are associated to proliferative retinopathy in a Mexican population with type 2 diabetes mellitus （T2dM）. METHOdS： A case-control study was conducted in adult individuals with T2dM associated to proliferative retinopathy or non-proliferative retinopathy from Oct. 2014 to Jun. 2015 from the Retina department of the Asociation to Prevent Blindness in Mexico. The selected patients were adults with a diagnosis of T2dM ≥5y. All subjects had a comprehensive ocular examination and the classification of the retinopathy severity was made considering the Early Treatment diabetic Retinopathy Study （ETdRS） standardization protocols. Genomic dNA was extracted from whole fresh blood. All samples were genotyped by qPCR for selected VEGF polymorphisms. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was calculated by comparing Chi-square values between the expected and the observed values for genotype ***： In total 142 individuals were enrolled, 71 individuals with T2dM and associated proliferative retinopathy and 71 individuals with non-proliferative retinopathy. One-sided Fisher’s exact test was performed for rs3025021 [OR （95% CI）=0.44（0.08-2.2）; P=0.25] and rs2010963 [OR （95% CI）=0.63（0.25-1.6）; P=0.23]. The minor allelic frequencies obtained were 26% for rs3025021, 10% for rs3025035 and 61% for rs2010963. The pairwise linkage disequilibrium between the three SNP was assessed, and was as follows： rs3025021 vs rs3025035： d’=1.0, r2=0.1043, P≤0.0001; rs3025021 vs rs2010963： d’=0.442, r2=0.0446, P=0.149; rs3025035 vs rs2010963： d’=0.505, r2=0.0214, P=***： This is the first analysis involving VEGF polymorphisms and proliferative diabetic retinopathy in a Mexican population. Evaluation of the effect of different wheats and xylanase supplementation on performance,nutrient and energy utilisation in broiler chicks

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance, nutrient utilisation and energy metabolism of broiler chicks fed 8 different wheat samples, supplemented or not with xylanase. Seven-hundred sixty eight male broilers(1-day-old) were distributed to 16 experimental treatments(6 replicates per treatment). The treatments were in a factorial arrangement with 8 different wheats and 2 levels of xylanase(0 or 16,000 BXU/kg). The predicted apparent metabolisable energy(AME) of the wheat samples ranged from 13.0 to 13.9 MJ/kg and all diets were formulated to contain the same amount of wheat. Body weight gain(BWG) and feed intake(FI) were measured at 21 d, as was jejunal digesta viscosity, and feed conversion ratio(FCR) calculated. On day 24, one representative bird per pen was selected to calculate whole body energetics. At 21 d, 3 chicks per replicate were randomly allocated to metabolism cages for energy and nutrient utilisation determinations, and were continued on the experimental diets until 24-d-old. No interactions were observed for any performance response variables, ileal nutrient utilisation or digesta viscosity. Xylanase improved BWG and reduced FCR and digesta viscosity(P d dry matter(dM) utilisation and xylanase increased ileal digestible energy(P = 0.04). Xylanase also improved(P dM and nitrogen retention. Apparent metabolisable energy and AME corrected for nitrogen(AMEn) were subject to an interaction whereby wheats 2 and 6, which returned the lowest AME and AMEn values, responded to xylanase supplementation and the remainder did not. Net energy for production and the efficiency of energy use for production were not influenced by xylanase, but were affected by wheat(P despite the significant differences between wheats with regards to their nutrient utilisation and energy metabolism in birds, xylanase removed this variance and resulted in more homogeneous performance.
