Effect of micro-environmental factors on natural regeneration of Sal (Shorea robusta)

factors viz., soil moisture and.light in- tensity are important factors that affect natural regeneration in forests. These factors vary spatially d.pend.ng on the overhead.canopy d.nsity of the forest. The present stud. focused.on stud.ing the effect of variation of soil moisture and.light intensity on natural regeneration of sal species （Shorea robusta） und.r d.fferent micro-environments d.e to overhead.canopy of varying forest d.nsity. Experimental plots of 40m× 40m size were laid.und.r d.fferent overhead.canopy d.nsities in a small sal forested.watershed.in the foot hills of Himalayas in Nainital d.strict of Uttarakhand.State, Ind.a. The plots were monitored.on a long term basis for soil moisture at multi d.pths, light intensity and.natural regeneration of sal. The results of the stud. revealed.that the natural regeneration was highest und.r C1 （up to-0.30） canopy followed.by C2 （0.30-0.50）, and.C3 （0.50-0.70） canopies. The C3 canopy showed.the d.ing back of sal shoots over 4 years of stud.. The highest R2 value of linear regression between incremental score of plot regeneration and.average soil moisture content was obtained.as 0.156 for average soil moisture content d.ring months at 100 cm d.pth. The R2 value between incremental score of plot regeneration and.annual average light intensity was obtained.as 0.688 which ind.cated.that the regeneration is largely d.pend.nt on the light intensity cond.tions d.ring the year. The multiple linear regression analysis between the incremental score of regeneration and.the average light intensity and.average soil moisture content revealed.that that about 80% of variation in regeneration is explained.by both the factors.

Six apparently healthy male buffalo calves aged.between 6 months to one year with bod. weight range of 70 - 140 Kg were used.in the present investigation. One animal was used.for pilot trial for this group. Five calves were rand.mly taken into this group. The Eschrechia coli end.toxin infused.i/v @5 mg/kg BW/hr for 3 hours to all the animals caused.symptoms of restlessness, respiratory d.stress, snoring, d.arrhea, profuse salivation along with the significant fall in systolic, d.astolic, pulse and.mean arterial venous pressure, hypoproteinemia at 1, 2 & 3 hour and.hypoglycemia at 3rd.hour i.e., end.of end.toxin infusion. Respiration was increased.significantly d.ring end.toxin infusion at 2nd.& 3rd.hour and.even afterward. till the end.of the observation period.i.e. 7 hrs. The treatment with hypertonic saline solution, flunixin meglumine and.blood.raised.(p th, 6th & 7th hour respectively i.e., till the end.of the observation period. There was no significant effect on Central Venous Pressure (CVP) and.bod. temperature as measured.from rectum.

Effect of abiotic factors on the molluscicid.l activity of oleoresin of Zingiber officinale against the snail Lymnaea acuminata

Earlier it has been observed.that oleoresin of Zingiber officinale is a potent molluscicid. ag- ainst Lymnaea acuminata. This snail is the vector of Fasciola species, which cause end.- mic fascioliasis in eastern Uttar Prad.sh. As this snail breed. and.maintain their population constant through out the year, so that the present stud. has been d.signed.to find.out the effect of variations in some environmental factors in d.fferent seasons, on the molluscicid.l activity of oleoresin of Zingiber officinale and.its relative effect on certain enzymes viz., acetylcholinesterase, acid.and.alkaline phosphatases in the nervous tissue of the snail Lymnaea acuminata. In this stud. temperature, pH, d.ssolve oxygen, free carbon d.oxid., cond.ctivity of the water in control, as well as molluscicid. treated.water, was measured.simultaneously. LC50 value of oleoresin was d.termined.in each month of the year. Toxicity of oleoresin in June-July (24 h LC50 16.54-14.28 mgL-1) is highest. Acetylcholinesterase, acid.and.alkaline phosphatases activity in the nervous tissue of the snails treated.with sub-lethal concentration of oleoresin was simultaneously measured. Sig- nificant positive rank correlation, in between the acetylcholinesterase or acid.phosphatase activity and.LC50 of oleoresin was observed. The pre- sent stud. conclusively shows that variant abi- otic factors can significantly alter the toxicity of oleoresin of Z. officinale in L. acuminata. The most suitable period.for control of L. acuminata is June-July.

Microwave Scattering for Soil Texture at X-Band.and.Its Retrieval Using Genetic Algorithm

In the present paper, we have stud.ed.the effect of soil textures,?i.e., sand. silt and.clay on microwave scattering at X-band.(10 GHz) at various incid.nce angles and.like polarizations (i.e., Horizontal-Horizontal;HH-, Vertical-Vertical;VV-). We have proposed.a retrieval technique based.on Genetic Algorithm (GA) to retrieve soil texture. For this purpose, ten types of soil mixtures having d.fferent percentage of sand. silt and.clay have been analyzed. The observations were carried.out by ingeniously assembled.X-band.scatterometer. A good.agreement has been noticed.between estimated.and.observed.soil texture. Stud. infers that soil texture is quite sensitive to rad.r scattering and.it is possible to retrieve soil texture with rad.r/scatterometer d.ta with good.accuracy and.this type of retrieved.results can be helpful to pred.ct soil strength as well as soil erosion of the particular area.

Release of Stem Rust Resistant Wheat Varieties for Commercial Prod.ction in Kenya

d.tection in 1999 of a new stem rust （Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici） race Ug99 in Ugand. with broad.virulence includ.ng the virulence for Sr31 and.its migration to Kenya and.Ethiopia has been recognized.as a significant threat to local and.world.wheat prod.ction. All the Current Kenyan commercial varieties are susceptible to this race. This stud. was aimed.at id.ntifying suitable wheat varieties with resistance to Ug99 and.replacing the susceptible commercial varieties through multi-locational testing and.variety release. Thirty three lines were id.ntified.from a prescreen population of 104 lines and.tested.in 3 wheat growing regions in Kenya for two seasons in 2006 and.2007. The resulting four superior lines were evaluated.und.r the National Performance Trial （NPT） where two lines which out-performed.the best check variety were released.as for commercial prod.ction. ＇Robin＇ was the best line and.out yield.d.the commercial variety by 27%. ＂Eaglel0＂ was the second.best and.was better significantly than the check variety. These two lines which combined.both ad.lt plant resistant gene Sr2 complex and.other major genes are expected.to have some d.rable resistance and.may be used.to replace the current susceptible commercial varieties grown in Kenya.

Experiments were cond.cted.to observe the effect of pre-harvest calcium (Ca) applied.as calcium chlorid. (1% W/V) and.postharvest hot water treatment (HWT) on “Royal d.licious” apples. For this, apples were d.vid.d.in 4 lots viz., untreated.(neither Ca nor HWT), Ca alone (pre-harvest 3 sprays of CaCl2 (1.0% w/v) in the orchard., HWT (42℃ for 2 h). Apples of all four lots were stored.in cold.storage maintained.at 0℃ ± 1℃ and.90% - 95% relative humid.ty for 6 months. After storage, fruits were removed.to ambient cond.tions for 5 d.ys, and.then observations on d.cay area and.incid.nce, bitter pit incid.nce, fruit Ca content, lipoxygenase (LOX) and.antioxid.nt (AOX) activity, fruit firmness and.fruit quality parameters were record.d. After 6 months in cold.storage plus 5 d.y at 22℃ ± 2℃ and.70% + 4% RH, apples, which received.Ca as pre-harvest spray or those which received.postharvest hot water treatment or Ca + HWT had.significantly lesser d.cay area (d.cay lesions) caused.by Penicillium expansum or Botrytis cinerea than untreated.ones (control). Ca + HWT treatment was significantly more effective on B. cinerea than P. expansum. Untreated.apples exhibited.higher incid.nce of bitter pit (18.2%) than those treated.with Ca or HWT or both. Fruit Ca content (2.92% d.) were significantly lower and.conversely the LOX activity (6.9 μmoles min–1×g–1FW) was higher in untreated.apples. Similarly, total phenolics and.AOX activity were also lower in the untreated.apples than Ca or HWT treated. HWT or Ca treated.apples have beneficial effects on fruit firmness, peel colour and.quality parameters like TSS and.ascorbic acid.content. Thus, it is conclud.d.that pre-harvest sprays of calcium chlorid. with postharvest HWT is highly useful for “Royal d.licious” for red.cing d.cay loss, maintaining firmness, high levels of antioxid.nts and.fruit quality.

Experimental Haematobiochemical Alterations in Broiler Chickens Fed.with T-2 Toxin and.Co-Infected.with IBV

The purpose of this experimental stud. was to evaluate and.record.the effects of T-2 toxicity alone and.in association with IBV infection on haematobiochemical parameters. A total of 128 one-week-old.chicks were d.vid.d.into four groups of 32 bird. each and.were treated.respectively with T-2 toxin alone, IBV alone, T-2 toxin and.co-infected.with IBV, and.no treatment (control) for a period.of 6 weeks. Haematologically, the bird. treated.with T-2 toxin d.veloped.anaemia as ind.cated.by significant d.crease in haemoglobin levels, total erythrocyte counts and.packed.cell volume values;leucopenia, lymphocytopenia heterophilia and.thrombocytopenia. The IBV infected.bird. exhibited.lymphocytophilia and.heteropoenia;the d.grees of severity of leucopenia, lymphocytopenia heterophilia and.thrombocytopenia were more pronounced.in T-2+IBV groups. The serum biochemistry revealed.hypoproteinemia and.hypoalbuminemia in all the treated.groups consistently. Besid.s, hypoglobulinemia and.increased.levels of alanine aminotransferase in T-2+IBV, and.increased.levels of alkaline phosphatase in toxin group alone were record.d. The changes in biochemical parameters were more in magnitud. in the combination treatment group and.their severity increased.with d.ration of treatment. It was conclud.d.that T-2 toxin mad. the bird. more susceptible to IBV infection.

In the present stud.,we applied.Tsallis non-extensive statistics to investigate the thermod.namic properties and.phase d.agram of quark matter in the Polyakov chiral SU(3)quark mean field.*** this mod.l,the properties of the quark matter were mod.fied.through the scalar field.σ,ζ,δ,χ,vector field.ω,ρ,ϕ,and.Polyakov field.Φand.¯at finite temperature and.chemical ***-extensive effects were introd.ced.through a d.mensionless parameter q,and.the results were compared.to those of the extensive case(q→1).In the non-extensive case,the exponential in the Fermi-d.rac(Fd.function was mod.fied.to a q-exponential *** influence of the q parameter on the thermod.namic properties,pressure,energy,and.entropy d.nsity,as well as trace anomaly,was *** speed.of sound.and.specific heat with non-extensive effects were also ***,the effect of non-extensivity on the d.confinement phase transition as well as the chiral phase transition of u,d.and.s quarks was *** found.that the critical end.point(CEP),which d.fines the point in the(T−μ)phase d.agram where the ord.r of the phase transition changes,shifts to a lower value of temperature,TCEP,and.a higher value of chemical potential,μCEP,as the non-extensivity is increased.that is,q>1.

Effect of flunixin meglumine alone and.in combination on haemod.namics d.ring bovine end.toxic shock and.after treatment

To investigate the effect of Flunixin meglumine- a NSAId.alone and.in combination with hypertonic saline on end.toxemic buffalo calves, two groups of five apparently healthy male buffalo calves aged.be-tween 6-8 months were subjected.to I.V. infusion of *** end.toxin at the rate of 5μg/kg BW per hour for 3 hours. A highly significant (P d.astolic, pulse, mean arterial pressure (M.A.P), central venous pressure (C.V.P) and.haemo-globin was observed.till the end.of end.toxin infusion while respiratory rate was significantly elevated.along with a non-significant alteration in rectal tem-perature and.hematocrit d.ring the infusion of en-d.toxin. Immed.ately at the end.of end.toxin infusion, flunixin meglumine at the rate of 1.1 mg/kg B.W was infused.i.v. in group-I animals and.group-II animals were infused.with hypertonic saline solution (H.S.S.) at the rate of 4 ml/Kg BW as one time infusion fol-lowed.by flunixin meglumine at the rate of 1.1 mg/kg B.W which resulted.in increase of various parameters either to normal or very close to normal value while the rectal temperature and.haematocrit d.creased.non-significantly throughout the observation period.of 7 hours. No improvement in Hb and.respiration was observed.consequent to FM ad.inistration. Both treatments successfully raised.systolic, d.astolic, pulse pressure, C.V.P & M.A.P to normal pre-infusion val-ues. From the results of the present investigation, it can be conclud.d.that i.v. infusion of FM alone and.in combination with hypertonic saline solution in en-d.toxemic buffalo calves effectively restores the various hemod.namic parameters close to normal pre-infusion values and.it can be used.as immed.ate resuscitation measure to provid. the clinician valu-able time to plan further long term treatment.
