There are many situations in w.ich the ability of animals to d.stinguish betw.en tw. similar looking objects can have significant selective consequences. For example, the objects that require d.scrimination may be ed.ble versus d.fend.d.prey, pred.tors versus non-pred.tors, or mates of varying quality. w.rking from the premise that there are situations in w.ich d.scrimi- nation may be more or less successful, w. hypothesized.that ind.vid.als find.it more d.fficult to d.stinguish betw.en stimuli w.en they encounter them sequentially rather than simultaneously. Our stud. has w.d. biological and.psychological implications from the perspective of signal perception, signal evolution, and.d.scrimination, and.could.apply to any system w.ere ind.vid.als are making relative jud.ments or choices betw.en tw. or more stimuli or signals. w.ile this is a general principle that might seem intuitive, it has not been experimentally tested.in this context, and.is often not consid.red.in the d.sign of mod.ls or experiments, or in the interpretation of a w.d. range of stud.es. Our stud. is d.fferent from previous stud.es in psychology in that a） the level of similarity of stimuli are grad.ally varied.to obtain selection grad.ents, and.b） w. d.scuss the implications of our stud. for specific areas in ecology, such as the level of perfection of mimicry in pred.tor-prey systems. Our experiments provid. evid.nce that it is ind.ed.more d.fficult to d.stinguish betw.en stimuli - and.to learn to d.stinguish betw.en stimuli - w.en they are encountered.sequentially rather than simultaneously, even if the intervening time interval is short .

The recently d.veloped.elastic-viscoplastic self-consistent mod.l w.th various self-consistent schemes w.s applied.to stud. the effect of basal texture on the mechanical behavior of magnesium alloy AZ31b sheet. The influence of the basal texture w.s investigated.using various initial textures generated.by artificially tilting the measured.texture of the reference AZ31b sheet around.in a transverse d.rection. The material parameters for the various mod.ls w.re fitted.to experimental uniaxial tension and.compression along the rolling d.rection and.w.re then used.to stud. the effects of the basal texture on the yield.stress, R value, ultimate stress and.uniform strain und.r uniaxial tension. The effect of the basal texture on sheet metal forming w.s further assessed.by calculating the limit strain und.r in-plane plane strain tension. An assessment of the pred.ctive capability of polycrystal plasticity mod.ls w.s mad. based.on comparisons of pred.ctions and.experimental observations. Among the available self-consistent approaches, the Affine self-consistent scheme resulted.in the best overall performance.

This paper outlines a d.agnostic approach to quantify the maintainability of a Commercial off-the-Shelf （COTS）-based.system by analyzing the complexity of the d.ployment of the system components. Interpretive Structural Mod.ling （ISM） is used.to d.monstrate how.ISM supports in id.ntifying and.und.rstand.ng interd.pend.ncies among COTS components and.how.they affect the complexity of the maintenance of the COTS based.System （CbS）. Through ISM analysis w. have d.termined.w.ich components in the CbS contribute most significantly to the complexity of the system. w.th the ISM, architects, system integrators, and.system maintainers can isolate the COTS prod.cts that cause the most complexity, and.therefore cause the most effort to maintain, and.take precautions to only change those prod.cts w.en necessary or d.ring major maintenance efforts. The analysis also clearly show. the components that can be easily replaced.or upgrad.d.w.th very little impact on the rest of the system.

based.on d.ta from 10-year field.experiments on resid.e/fertilizer management in the d.yland.farming region of northern China, Century mod.l w.s used.to simulate the site-specific ecosystem d.namics through ad.ustment of the mod.l＇s parameters, and.the applicability of the mod.l to propose soil organic carbon （SOC） management temporally and.spatially, in cases such as of tillage/resid.e/fertilization management options, w.s id.ntified.v/a scenario *** betw.en simulations and.actual measurements w.re in close agreement w.en appropriate applications of stover,manure and.inorganic fertilizer w.re combined. Simulations of extreme C/N ratios w.th ad.ed.organic materials tend.d.to und.restimate the measured.effects. Scenarios of changed.tillage method., resid.e practices and.fertilization options show.d.potential to maintain and.enhance SOC in the long run, w.ile increasing inorganic N slow.d.d.w. the SOC turnover rate but d.d.not create a net C sink w.thout any organic C input. The Century mod.l simulation show.d.a good.relationship betw.en annual C inputs to the soil and.the rate of C sequestration in the top 20 cm layer and.provid.d.quantitative estimations of changes in parameters crucial for sustainable land.use and.management. Conservation tillage practices for sustainable land.use should.be integrated.w.th resid.e management and.appreciable organic and.inorganic fertilizer application, ad.pted.accord.ng to the local resid.e resource, soil fertility and.prod.ction cond.tions. At least 50% resid.e return into the soil w.s need.d.annually for maintenance of SOC balance, and.manure amend.ent w.s important for enhancement of SOC in small crop-livestock systems in w.ich crop resid.e land.application w.s limited.

The GC-Ion Trap MS is recently one of the most efficient instrumental analysis recommend.d.for und.rstand.ng the chemistry of these organic compound., not only in w.ter but even in the food.chain and.other environmental med.a (air and.soil). Results of the experiment cond.cted.on w.ter samples from Kuguri and.Yatsutani sampling stations show.d.consid.rably higher levels of organic enrichment (COd.10 mg/L and.11 mg/L respectively). Total concentrations of Pb (0.072 mg/L and.0.093 mg/L) and.Cd.(0.004 mg/Land.0.011 mg/L) on the other hand. invariably exceed.d.the maximum allow.ble concentrations for human health and.the living environment (Pb=0.005 mg/L; Cd.0.001 mg/L respectively). And.the toxicity levels for these contaminants at LC_50 show.d.critical impact on rainbow.trout (hypersensitive species) at 0.14 mg/L for Pb and.0.007 mg/L for Cd.in 96 hours respectively. Although these major contaminants includ.ng phenol and.3-, 4-cresol, show.d.relatively higher toxicity impact in the experimental med.a, it w.uld.remain contentious to justify any associated.potential d.ngers w.thout regular routine w.ter monitoring, at least for a period.of one year. Nevertheless, the d.ta could.serve as a benchmark through w.ich other phenomena can easily be investigated.

Low.gold.and.silver leaching kinetics has been commonly observed.in trad.tional gold.silver cyanid.tion process, especially in heap leaching and.in situ leaching operations. The d.fferent mineralogy of gold.and.silver in the ores is suspected.to be the main reason, e.g., the occurrence of low.solubility acanthite (Ag2S) typically results in low.overall silver extraction. d.e to the low.solubility of oxygen in cyanid. solution, the reactivity and.availability of oxid.nt is believed.to be the critical limitation for gold.and.silver d.ssolution. The use of ferricyanid. as the auxiliary oxid.nt for gold.and.silver cyanid.tion has been examined. The rotating d.sc test results prove the assistant effect of ferricyanid. on increasing the d.ssolution rate of gold.and.silver. The potential use of ferricyanid. in gold.silver cyanid.tion process is proposed.based.on the leaching results of actual ores.
