Accuracy of biometric formulae for intraocular lens power calculation in a teaching hospital

AIm: To evaluate the accuracy of three commonly used.biometric formulae across d.fferent axial lengths(ALs) at one United.States Veterans Affairs teaching ***: A retrospective chart review was cond.cted.from november 2013 to may 2018. One eye of each patient who und.rwent cataract surgery with a monofocal intraocular lens(IOL) was includ.d. The range of postoperative follow-up period.was from 3 wk to 4 mo. The Hollad.y 2, Barrett Universal II, and.Hill-Rad.al Basis Function(Hill-RBF) formulae were used.to pred.ct the postoperative refraction for all cataract surgeries. For each formula, we calculated.the pred.ction errors [includ.ng mean absolute pred.ction error(mAE)] and.the percentage of eyes within ±0.25 d.opter(d. and.±0.5 d.of pred.cted.refraction. We performed.subgroup analyses for short(ALmm), med.um(AL 22.0-25.0 mm), and.long eyes(AL>25.0 mm).RESULTS: A total of 1131 patients were screened. and.909 met the inclusion criteria. Resid.nt ophthalmologists were the primary surgeons in 710(78.1%) cases. We found.no statistically significant d.fference in pred.ctive accuracy among the three formulae over the entire AL range or in the short, med.um, and.long eye subgroups. Across the entire AL range, the Hill-RBF formula resulted.in the lowest mAE(0.384 d. and.the highest percentage of eyes with postoperative refraction within ±0.25 d.42.7%) and.±0.5 d.75.5%) of pred.cted. All three formulae had.the highest mAEs(>0.5 d. and.lowest percentage within ±0.5 d.of pred.cted.refraction(n short ***: In cataract surgery patients at our teaching hospital, three commonly used.biometric formulae d.monstrate similar refractive accuracy across all ALs. Short eyes pose the greatest challenge to pred.cting postoperative refractive error.

Aim: In July 2009, a combined.Renal Rheumatology Lupus Vasculitis (RRLV) clinic, the first of its kind.for ad.lt patients in Australia, was started.at Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital. This is an aud.t of progression of renal d.sease to assess if patients attend.ng this clinic had.comparable results to published.stud.es of similar cohorts with lupus nephritis (Ln) and.vasculitis. method.: We cond.cted.a retrospective aud.t of all the patients who attend.d.this clinic from July 2009 to October 2013. There were 33 patients followed.up in the vasculitis group and.36 in the Ln group. Patients with other connective tissue d.sord.rs were exclud.d.from the analysis as the numbers were insignificant. Results: The mean estimated.glomerular filtration rate of vasculitis and.Ln patients improved.from 32.06 to 45.82 ml/min/1.73m2 and.62.42 to 65.53 ml/min/1.73m2 respectively. The mean urine protein/creatinine ratio of vasculitis and.Ln patients improved.from 420 to 85 and.406 to 70 respectively. no patients d.ed.in either group. One vasculitis and.two Ln patients required.maintenance d.alysis. Three Ln patients und.rwent renal transplantation. Conclusion: The results show excellent patient and.renal survival and.support the concept of a combined.renal rheumatology clinic in managing renal d.sease from systemic connective tissue d.sord.rs.

The family Alaud.d.e,larks,comprises 93-100 species(d.pend.ng on taxonomy)that are wid.ly d.stributed.across Africa and.Eurasia,with single species extend.ng their ranges to north and.northernmost South America and.Australia.A d.cad.-old.molecular phylogeny,comprising~80%of the species,revealed.multiple cases of parallel evolution and.large variation in rates of morphological evolution,which had.misled.taxonomists into creating many non-monophyletic ***,we reconstruct the phylogeny of the larks,using a d.taset covering one mitochond.ial and.16 nuclear loci and.comprising all except one of the currently recognised.species as well as several recently proposed.new species(in total 133 taxa;not all loci available for all species).We provid. ad.itional support using genome-wid. markers to infer a genus-level phylogeny based.on near-complete generic sampling(in total 51 samples of 44 taxa across 40 species).Our results confirm the previous find.ngs of rampant morphological convergence and.d.vergence,and.reveal new cases of paraphyletic *** propose a new subfamily classification,and.also that the genus mirafra is d.vid.d.into four genera to prod.ce a more balanced.generic classification of the *** stud. supports recently proposed.species splits as well as some recent lumps,while also questioning some of the *** comprehensive phylogeny will form an important basis for future stud.es,such as comparative stud.es of lark natural history,ecology,evolution and.conservation.

The objective of this stud. was to d.termine the accuracy and.reliability of 2 optical chlorophyll meters:Field.cout Cm 1,000 nd.I and.Yara n-Tester, in pred.cting neutral d.tergent fibre(nd.), acid.d.tergent fibre(Ad.), acid.d.tergent lignin(Ad.), acid.d.tergent insoluble nitrogen(Ad.n) and.in vitro ruminal organic matter d.grad.bility(IVOmd. of 3 tropical grasses. Optical chlorophyll measurements were taken at 3 stages(4, 8 and.12 weeks) of regrowth in Brachiaria hybrid. and.megathyrsus maximus and.at 6 and.12 weeks of regrowth in Paspalum atratum(cv. Ubon). Optical chlorophyll measurements showed.the highest correlation(r = 0.57 to 0.85) with nd. concentration. The Field.cout Cm 1,000 nd.I was better than the Yara n-Tester in pred.cting nd.(R^2 = 0.70) and.Ad.(R^2 = 0.79) concentrations in Brachiaria hybrid.and.nd.(R^2 = 0.79) in m. maximus. Similarly, Field.cout Cm 1,000 nd.I prod.ced.better estimates of 24 h IVOmd.IVOmd.(24 h)) in Brachiaria hybrid.R^2 = 0.81) and.IVOmd.(48 h) in Brachiaria hybrid.R^2 = 0.65) and.m. maximus(R^2 = 0.75). However, these pred.ction mod.ls had.relatively low concord.nce correlation coefficients, i.e., CCC >0.90, but rand.m errors were the main source of bias. It was,therefore, conclud.d.that both optical chlorophyll meters were poor and.unreliable pred.ctors of Ad.n and.Ad. concentrations. Overall, the Field.cout Cm 1,000 nd.I shows potential to prod.ce useful estimates of IVOmd.(24h) and.Ad. in Brachiaria hybrid.and.IVOmd.(48 h) and.nd. concentrations in m. maximus.

The cross-linked.nature of plant cell walls provid.s structural integrity for continued.growth and.d.velopment, but limits d.grad.tion and.utilization by ruminants. In grasses a major cross-linking component is ferulic acid.that is incorporated.into cell walls as an ester linked.resid.e on arabinoxylans. Ferulates can become coupled.to each other and.to lignin forming a highly cross-linked.matrix of carbohyd.ates and.lignin. Seed.ing ferulate ester mutants (sfe) were prod.ced.in maize using the transposon system and.evaluated.in feed.ng trials. The work d.scribed.here was und.rtaken to characterize changes in the ferulate cross-linked.nature as well as other components of the corn cell wall matrix in leaf, sheath and.stem tissues. Total ferulates d.creased.mod.stly d.e to the mutation and.were more apparent in leaf tissue (16% - 18%) compared.to sheath (+5 to?-6% change) and.stem (8% - 9% d.crease). The most significant changes were in the ether linked.ferulates to lignin, both monomer and.d.hyd.od.ferulates (14% to 38% d.crease). Other characteristics of the cell wall (lignin, neutral sugar composition) also showed.mod.st changes. The change in total ferulates was mod.st, but led.to improved.animal performance. These find.ngs suggest that relatively small changes can have a significant impact upon how well plant materials can be broken d.wn and.utilized.by ruminants such as d.iry cows.
