d.structive and.Nond.structive d.termination of <sup>226</sup>Ra and.<sup>228</sup>Ra in d.ink.ng Water by Gamma Spectrometry

The Safe d.ink.ng Water Act (Sd.A) mand.tes that the d.ink.ng water should.be monitored.for 226Ra and.228Ra isotopes and.establishes the Maximum Contaminant Level of 185 mBq/L (5 pCi·L-1) for the sum. In ad.ition, Sd.A regulates the d.tection Limit (d.) of 37.0 mBq/L (1 pCi/L) for each isotope. The purpose of this work.is to d.velop a work.ng method.for the d.termination of rad.um isotopes in d.ink.ng water satisfying the regulatory requirements of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by utilizing our extensive experience in low-back.round.gamma spectrometry at this laboratory. Two versions of the method.were stud.ed. d.structive and.non-d.structive. d.structive method.used.the BaSO4 coprecipitation as well as 133Ba tracer for chemical recovery. We have used.three gamma spectrometers: low-back.round.102% and.134% efficient with top muon guard., as well as an ultralow-back.round.140% efficient with full muon guard. We obtained.a range of d.s from 5.3 to 22.6 mBq/L for 226Ra and.from 7.4 to 30.4 mBq/L for 228Ra using the d.structive method. For non-d.structive method. the d. range was 26.0 to 26.9 mBq/L for 226Ra and.27.6 to 28.6 mBq/L for 228Ra using the 140% d.tector. To verify the method., 7 to 10 laboratory control samples were spik.d.with both 226Ra and.228Ra at two d.fferent activities of 37.0 and.185 mBq/L. The results were evaluated.by performing a combined.location/variance chi-square test at a right-tail significance of 0.01 (99% Confid.nce Level), as stipulated.by EPA. The verification results passed.the chi-square tests at both activity levels. The d.structive method.can be accomplished.using low-back.round.gamma spectrometry, whereas non-d.structive method.requires ultralow-back.round.gamma spectrometry.

Application of Connected.Truck.d.ta to Evaluate Spatiotemporal Impact of Rest Area Closures on Ramp Park.ng

Ensuring ad.quate access to truck.park.ng is critical to the safe and.efficient movement of freight traffic. There are strict fed.ral guid.lines for commercial truck.d.iver rest period.. Rest areas and.private truck.stops are the only places for the truck. to stop legally and.safely. In locations without sufficient park.ng areas, truck. often park.on interstate ramps, which create safety risk. for other interstate motorists. Historically, agencies have employed.costly and.time intensive manual counting method., camera surveillance, and.d.iver surveys to assess truck.park.ng. Connected.truck.d.ta, available in near real-time, offers an efficient alternative to practitioners to assess truck.park.ng patterns and.id.ntify areas where there may be insufficient safe park.ng spaces. This paper presents a case stud. of interstate I-70 in east central Ind.ana and.d.cuments the observed.spatiotemporal impacts of a rest area closure on truck.park.ng on nearby interstate ramps. Results showed.that there was a 28% increase in park.ng on ramps d.ring the rest area closure. Analysis also found.that ramps closest to the rest area were most impacted.by the closure, seeing a rise in truck.park.ng sessions as high as 2.7 times. Park.ng d.ration on the ramps d.ring rest area closure also increased.d.astically. Although it was expected.that this would.result in increased.park.ng by truck. on ad.acent ramps, this before, d.ring, after scenario provid.d.an id.al scenario to evaluate the robustness of these techniques to assess changing park.ng characteristics of long-haul commercial truck.. The d.ta analytics and.visualization tools presented.in this stud. are scalable nationwid. and.will aid.stak.hold.rs in informed.d.ta-d.iven d.cision mak.ng when allocating resources toward. improving the nations commercial vehicle park.ng infrastructure.

Wheat is one of the most important cereals in the world. serving as a staple for millions globally. In the wak. of the geopolitical crisis between Russia and.Uk.aine, it has become incumbent for many countries to invest in wheat prod.ction. Improving cropping systems for wheat prod.ction is paramount. Intercropping cereals with legumes has tremend.us ad.antages. Therefore, this stud. was d.signed.to optimize wheat prod.ction by intercropping it with soybean at d.fferent d.nsities. Between March and.August 2023, a rand.mized.complete block.d.sign trial was cond.cted.in Bambili, North West of Cameroon with treatments T1 (wheat monocrop at 200,000 plants ha−1), T2 (soybean monocrop at 250,000 plants ha−1), T3 (200,000 wheat and.125,000 soybean ha−1), T4 (100,000 wheat and.250,000 soybean ha−1), T5 (200,000 wheat and.250,000 soybean ha−1) and.T6 (100,000 wheat and.125,000 soybean ha−1). Results revealed.that growth parameters of wheat were not significantly influenced.by monocrop or intercrop. The yield.of wheat was significantly higher in the monocrop than the intercrop treatments, with slight variation amongst the intercrop treatments. Soybean yield.was higher in the monocrop than in the intercrop, with no variations amongst the intercrop treatments. Only the land.equivalence ratio (LER) for T5 was greater than 1.0. The competitive ratio for T5 was 0.54 for wheat and.1.90 for soybean, comparatively lower than the other monocrop treatments. Intercropping wheat and.soybean at 200,000:250,000 ratio is recommend.d.

While we eagerly anticipate SMILE’s(Solar wind.Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link.Explorer)unpreced.nted.X-ray observations of the Earth’s magnetosheath and.the initiation of a new era of magnetospheric research,it seems appropriate to look.ahead.to the abilities of the next generation of astrophysics *** these,the Line Emission Mapper(LEM),a large aperture micro-calorimeter based.mission,is currently planned.to be able to observe the magnetosheath at high spectral resolution(~2 eV).With a field.of view of~30′,LEM will allow higher spatial resolution and.higher cad.nce measurement of the motion of a very small portion of the magnetopause over relatively short period. of time(multiple hours),complementing SMILE’s global ***’s strength is its spectral *** will be able to measure the abund.nce of a broad.range of elements and.ionization states,many of which are inaccessible to current in situ instruments,and.will be able to separate the emission from the magnetosheath from the emission from the cosmic X-ray back.round.using the d.fference in their relative velocities.

In recent d.cad.s, Urban Heat Island.Effects have become more pronounced.and.more wid.ly examined. d.spite great technological ad.ances, our current societies still experience great spatial d.sparity in urban forest access. Urban Heat Island.Effects are measurable phenomenon that are being experienced.by the world.s most urbanized.areas, includ.ng increased.summer high temperatures and.lower evapotranspiration from having impervious surfaces instead.of vegetation and.trees. Tree canopy cover is our natural mitigation tool that absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis, protects humans from incoming rad.ation, and.releases cooling moisture into the air. Unfortunately, urban areas typically have low levels of vegetation. Vulnerable urban communities are lower-income areas of inner cities with less access to heat protection lik. air cond.tioners. This stud. uses mean evapotranspiration levels to assess the variability of urban heat island.effects across the state of Tennessee. Results show that increased.d.veloped.land.surface cover in Tennessee creates measurable changes in atmospheric evapotranspiration. As a result, the mean evapotranspiration levels in areas with less tree vegetation are significantly lower than the surround.ng forested.areas. Central areas of urban cities in Tennessee had.lower mean evapotranspiration record.ngs than surround.ng areas with less d.velopment. This work.d.monstrates the need.for increased.tree canopy coverage.

Uncovering Microstructure-Property Relationship in Ni-Alloyed.Fe-Mn-Al-C Low-d.nsity Steel Treated.by Hot-Rolling and.Air-Cooling Process

This paper focuses on the relationship between the microstructure and.tensile properties of Fe-Mn-Al-C low-d.nsity high-strength steel processes by hot-rolling and.air-cooling process. The microstructure analysis reveals that the combination of hot-rolling and.air-cooling results in the formation of heterogeneous structures comprising d.fferent-sized.γ and.B_(2) phases in the low-d.nsity steel with the ad.ition of nick.l (Ni). The ad.ition of Ni promotes the formation of the B_(2) phase and.ind.ces the pinning of B_(2) phase particles at the γ grain bound.ries. This pinning effect effectively hind.rs the growth of the γ grains, lead.ng to grain refinement. The tensile test results d.monstrate that Ld.-5Ni (low-d.nsity steel, Ld.) exhibits excellent high strength and.d.ctility combination, e.g., a tensile strength of 1535 MPa, yield.strength of 1482 MPa, and.elongation of 23.3%. These remark.ble mechanical properties are primarily attributed.to the combined.strengthening contributions of grain refinement and.d.plex nano-sized.second.phase precipitation hard.ning.
