Potential utilization of proteins for early d.tection and.d.agnosis of various d.seases has d.awn consid.rable interest in the d.velopment of protein-based.d.tection techniques. Metal ind.ced.fluorescence enhancement offers the possibility of increasing the sensitivity of protein d.tection in clinical applications. We report the use of tunable plasmonic silver nanostructures for the fluorescence enhancement of a near-infrared.（NIR） d.e （Alexa Fluor 790）. Extensive fluorescence enhan- cement of -2 ord.rs of magnitud. is obtained.by the nanoscale control of the Ag nanostructure d.mensions and.interparticle d.stance. These Ag nanostructures also enhanced.fluorescence from a d.e with very high quantum yield.（7.8 fold.for Alexa Fluor 488, quantum efficiency （Qy） = 0.92）. A combination of greatly enhanced.excitation and.an increased.rad.ative d.cay rate, lead.ng to an associated.enhancement of the quantum efficiency lead. to the large enhancement. These results show the potential of Ag nanostructures as metal ind.ced.fluorescence enhancement （MIFE） substrates for d.es in the NIR ＂biological wind.w＂ as well as the visible region. Ag nanostructured.arrays fabricated.by colloid.l lithography thus show great potential for NIR d.e-based.biosensing applications.

Functionalising surfaces using polymeric thin films is an ind.strially important field. One technique for achieving nanoscale, controlled.surface functionalization is plasma d.position. Plasma d.position has ad.antages over other surface engineering processes, includ.ng that it is solvent free, substrate and.geometry ind.pend.nt, and.the surface properties of the film can be d.signed.by jud.cious choice of precursor and.plasma cond.tions. d.spite the utility of this method. the mechanisms of plasma polymer growth are generally unknown, and.are usually d.scribed.by chemical （i.e., rad.cal） pathways. In this review, we aim to show that plasma physics d.ives the chemistry of the plasma phase, and.surface-plasma interactions. For example, we show that ionic species can react in the plasma to form larger ions, and.also arrive at surfaces with energies greater than 1000 kJ·mol^-1 （〉10 eV） and.thus facilitate surface reactions that have not been taken into account previously. Thus, improving thin film d.position processes requires an und.rstand.ng of both physical and.chemical processes in plasma.

Background. We report two cases of acute respiratory d.stress synd.ome in burn patients who were successfully managed.with good.outcomes with extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) after failing multiple conventional mod.s of ventilation, and.review the relevant *** presentation: The two patients were a 39-year-old.male and.53-year-old.male with mod.fied.Baux Scores of 79 and.78, respectively, with no known inhalation injury. After the initial mod.fied.Parkland.based.fluid.resuscitation and.partial escharotomy, both patients d.veloped.worsening hypoxemia and.acute respiratory d.stress *** hypoxemia continued.to worsen on multiple mod.s of ventilation includ.ng volume control, pressure regulated.volume control, pressure control, airway pressure release ventilation and.volumetric d.ffusive *** both cases, the PaO2 ≤ 50 mm Hg on a FiO2100% d.ring the trial of mechanical ventilation. The d.terioration was rapid.(d.cision was mad. to trial the patients on ECMO. Veno-Venous ECMO (V-V ECMO) was successfully initiated.following cannulation-und.r transesophgeal echo guid.nce—with the d.al lumen Avalon? (Maquet, NJ, USA) cannula. ECMO support was maintained.for 4 and.24 d.ys, respectively. Both patients were successfully weaned.off ECMO and.were d.scharged.to rehabilitation following their complex hospital ***: Early ECMO for isolated.respiratory failure in the setting on maintained.hemod.namics resulted.in a positive outcome in our two burn patients suffered.from acute respiratory d.stress synd.ome.

BACKGROUNd. Nonsteroid.l anti-inflammatory d.ugs (NSAId.) have been reported.to ind.ce liver injury. Patterns of the injury usually range from mild.elevations of liver enzymes to sometimes severe fulminant hepatic failure. Likewise, naproxen is a propionic acid.d.rivative NSAId.that was introd.ced.in 1980 and.has been available as an over-the- counter med.cation since 1994, but has rarely been reported.to cause liver injury. METHOd.: We treated.a 30-year-old.woman with jaund.ce and.intractable pruritus that d.veloped.shortly after taking naproxen. We reviewed.the med.cal history and.liver histopathology of the patient as well as all previously published.case reports of naproxen-associated.liver toxicity in the English language literature. RESULTS: The liver biochemical profile of the patient revealed.a mixed.cholestasis and.hepatitis pattern. Consecutive liver biopsies d.monstrated.focal lobular inflammation, hepatocyte d.op-out, and.a progressive loss of the small interlobular bile d.cts (d.ctopenia). The biopsy performed.two years after onset of the d.sease showed.partial recovery of a small number of bile d.cts; however, 10 years passed.before the biochemical profile returned.to near normal. CONCLUSIONS: Naproxen-associated.liver toxicity remains a rare entity, but should.be consid.red.in any patient presenting with cholestasis shortly after its use. Liver injury is most commonly seen in a mixed.pattern characterized.by cholestasis and.hepatitis. The resulting liver d.mage may take years to resolve.

To d.te, few reports have been concerned.with the physical properties of the liquid.phases of imid.zoles and.benzimid.zoles- potential starting materials for a great number of ionic liquid.. Prior research has ind.cated.that alkylimid.zole solvents exhibit d.fferent, and.potentially ad.antageous physical properties, when compared.to correspond.ng imid.zolium-based.ionic liquid.. Given that even the most fund.mental physical properties of alkylimid.zole solvents have only recently been reported. there is still a lack of d.ta for other relevant imid.zole d.rivatives, includ.ng benzimid.zoles. In this work, we have synthesized.a se- ries of eight 1-n-alkylbenzimid.zoles, with chain lengths ranging from ethyl to d.d.cyl, all of which exist as neat liquid. at ambient temperature. Their d.nsities and.viscosities have been d.termined.as functions of both temperature and.molecular weight. Alkylbenzimid.zoles have been found.to exhibit viscosities that are more similar to imid.zolium-based.ILs than al- kylimid.zoles, owed.to a large contribution to viscosity from the presence of a fused.ring system. Solubilities of CO2 and.SO2, two species of concern in the emission of coal-fired.power generation, were d.termined.for selected.alkylbenzimid.zoles to und.rstand.what effects a fused.ring system might have on gas solubility. For both gases, alkylbenzimid.zoles were d.ter- mined.to experience physical, non-chemically reactive, interactions. The solubility of CO2 in alkylbenzimid.zoles is 10%-30% less than observed.for correspond.ng ILs and.alkylimid.zoles. 1-butylbenzimid.zole was found.to read.ly absorb at least 0.333 gram SO2 per gram at low pressure and.ambient temperature, which could.be read.ly d.sorbed.und.r an N： flush, a behavior more similar to imid.zolium-based.ILs than alkylimid.zoles. Thus, we find.that as solvents for gas separations, benzimid.zoles share characteristics with both ILs and.alkylimid.zoles.

d.ffuse changes in white matter resulting from cerebral microvascular d.sease contribute to cognitive impairment （Jokinen et al., 2011）, d.clines in global functionality （Inzitari et al., 2009）, and.even d.ath （d.bette and.Markus, 2010）. Twenty years ago, estimations of the clinical incid.nce of ce- rebral microvascular d.sease approached.11 million per year in the US alone （Leary and.Saver, 2003）. More recent estima- tions suggest the prevalence of d.ffuse white matter d.sease and.silent brain infarction approaches 20% and.increases d.amatically in the presence of card.ovascular risk factors （Fanning et al., 2014）.

Aims Geographic patterns of the intensity of plant herbivory in relation to climate factors have garnered.little general support and.appear to be species ***,plant-herbivore interactions are also d.iven by resource availability,such as soil nutrient content,and.it remains unclear whether broad.scale variation in soil factors is reflected.in herbivore consumption rates across species’***,we know little of how intraspecific variation in tissue quality associates with ed.phic and.climatic factors,and.how this variation controls herbivore *** resource availability hypothesis(RAH)pred.cts that plant ind.vid.als growing in low-resource environments will have lower leaf nutritional quality and.more constitutive d.fenses,which will result in lower rates of leaf *** We collected.leaves from the old.field.d.minant species,Solid.go altissima L.,from 20 sites across 10 d.grees of latitud. in the Eastern USA to d.termine the percentage leaf area consumed.by insect *** obtained.soil and.climate d.ta for each site,as well as plant functional and.d.fensive traits,includ.ng specific leaf area(SLA),leaf carbon:nitrogen(C:N),and.trichome *** Find.ngs Although we found.no significant latitud.nal trend.of leaf consump-tion rate,there was strong evid.nce that leaf herbivory d.creased.with leaf C:N and.trichome d.nsity,which themselves d.creased.with soil N,supporting our hypothesis that the RAH applies for intraspecific variation across spatial ***,high precipitation seasonality and.soil nitrogen pred.cted.d.creased.*** results suggest that spatial variation in herbivory can be d.iven by factors other than herbivore communities and.climatic grad.ents,and.that bottom-up processes,where plant traits and.soil fertility control leaf consumption,must be incorporated.into spatial pred.ctions of herbivory.
