The d.velopment, prod.ction and.utilization of renewab.e energy, energy storage and.green hyd.ogen and.the associated.technologies in Sri Lanka have great potential to contrib.te to the United.Nations' Sustainab.e d.velopment Goals (Sd.s). The island.aims to achieve 70% electricity generation from renewab.e energy sources b. 2030 (within the target of 40% utilization of renewab.e energy sources for the entire energy generation of the country b. 2030). The power sector has to invest US$11 b.llion from 2023 to 2030 to contrib.te to reaching this target. This commentary aims to provid. a critical perspective on the recommend.tions of the report from the National Science and.Technology Commission's 9th b.ennial conference in 2023 on science and.technology, the sub.thematic technical report on clean energy, energy storage and.green hyd.ogen in line with the Sd.s in the Sri Lankan context. The technical report provid.s insightful recommend.tions for Sri Lanka's energy sector und.r three main sections: renewab.e energy, energy storage and.green hyd.ogen. Also, it explores the potential of various renewab.e energy sources, energy storage systems and.green hyd.ogen as sustainab.e solutions to ad.ress the country's energy challenges while emphasizing the spillover effects of them, which could.contrib.te to the enterprise's job.creation and.uplift the economy. This commentary provid.s a critical perspective on clean energy, energy storage and.green hyd.ogen in line with the United.Nations Sd.s in the Sri Lankan context b.sed.on a recent report from the National Science and.Technology Commission of Sri Lanka. Efficiency of Legumes in Increasing Yam Yield.und.r Sand. Ferrasol in the Forest Zone of Southwestern Côte d.#8217;Ivoire

The cropping system is b.sed.on trad.tional farming in rural areas. In this way, yield. of some food.crops like yam are very low consid.ring their high need.for nutrients. The nutrient-rich land.is und.r high land.pressure as it is occupied.b. cash crops such as oil palm and.rub.er at the expense of food.crops and.soil fertility is d.clining. The stud. was cond.cted.in Grand.Lahou to assess the effect of organic matter provid.d.b. legumes in increasing yam yield. The rand.mized.complete b.ock d.sign includ.d.four (4) treatments: Arachis hypogaea + yam association (T1), Acacia mangium + yam association (T2), Arachis + Acacia mangium + yam association (T3) and.pure yam crop (T0). The parameters measured.were: the soil nutrients content, the rate of mineralization of organic matter through the C/N ratio as well as the yield.of yam through d.fferent techniques that allowed.the ob.ective of the stud. to b. achieved. It was noted.a slight improvement of nitrogen and.organic carb.n in all treatments with a higher value record.d.in the T2 treatment. The C/N ratio d.creased.to 12 in all treatments compared.to the control, which reflects a normal d.composition of the organic matter. Treatment T1 increased.yam yield.(8.4 t/ha) in contrast to treatments T2 (4.1 t/ha) and.T3 (2.8 t/ha). Legume-b.sed.treatments T2 and.T3 were associated.with a significant d.crease in yam yield. resulting in losses of −46.34% to −25.09%, while treatment T1 resulted.in a gain of 28.57%. As a result, the treatments involving legumes contrib.ted.to normalizing the organic matter content of the soil. The simultaneous association of these two legumes led.to a d.crease in yam prod.ction, contrary to the treatment associating only ground.ut.

The prominent linear d.ke rid.es outcropped.in the Narmad.-Tapi d.kes’ swarm represent an intrusion in the d.ccan Traps. Und.rstand.ng the relationship among the und.rlying geological structures, the strike of the d.kes, and.the channel patterns is essential. d.kes act as ob.tructions to stream flow, causing d.versions, and.their geometry and.patterns significantly impact the rivers and.streams that d.ain and.cross the d.ke swarm zone. For this stud., Google Earth images, LISS III images, and.Cartosat d.M were used.to d.lineate the Shivan b.sin and.extract d.ke features. The Shivan River b.sin is a sixth-ord.r d.ainage system that reflects superimposed.d.ainage systems within the Tapi d.ke swarm zone. Ab.ut 65% (169 km2) of its area is controlled.b. d.ke orientation. The d.ke rid.es align pred.minantly in an East-West (E-W) d.rection, a pattern mainly followed.b. lower-ord.r streams, which have d.veloped.an insequent, transverse d.ainage network within the d.ke swarm zone. In the lower parts of the Shivan b.sin, where the numb.r of d.kes d.creases, the d.ainage network follows the general slope and.is oriented.in a North-South d.rection. The Shivan River and.its trib.taries have partially ad.usted.to the d.ke orientation, resulting in a transverse d.ainage pattern in areas characterized.b. parallel d.ke rid.es.

The use of carb.n d.oxid. as a working fluid.has b.en the sub.ect of extensive stud.es in recent years, particularly in the field.of refrigeration where it is at the heart of research to replace CFC and.HCFC. Its thermod.namic properties make it a fluid.of choice in the efficient use of energy at low and.med.um temperatures in engine cycles. However, the performance of transcritical CO2 cycles weakens und.r high temperature and.pressure cond.tions, especially in refrigeration systems;On the other hand. this d.sad.antage b.comes rather interesting in engine cycles where CO2 can b. used.as an alternative to the organic working fluid.in small and.med.um-sized.electrical systems for low quality or waste heat sources. b.cterial colonization of orthoped.c implants is one of the lead.ng causes of failure and.clinical complexities for load.b.aring metallic implants. Topical or systemic ad.inistration of antib.otics may not offer the most efficient d.fense against colonization, especially in the case of second.ry infection, lead.ng to surgical removal of implants and.in some cases even limb.. In this stud., laser powd.r b.d.fusion was implemented.to fab.icate Ti3Al2V alloy b. a 1:1 weight mixture of CpTi and.Ti6Al4V powd.rs. Ti-Tantalum(Ta)–Copper(Cu) alloys were further analyzed.b. the ad.ition of Ta and.Cu into the Ti3Al2V custom alloy. The b.ological,mechanical, and.trib.-b.ocorrosion properties of Ti3Al2V alloy were evaluated. A 10 wt.% Ta(10Ta) and.3 wt.% Cu(3Cu) were ad.ed.to the Ti3Al2V alloy to enhance b.ocompatib.lity and.impart inherent b.cterial resistance. Ad.itively manufactured.implants were investigated.for resistance against Pseud.monas aeruginosa and.Staphylococcus aureus strains of b.cteria for up to 48 h. A 3 wt.% Cu ad.ition to Ti3Al2V d.splayed.improved.antib.cterial efficacy, i.e.78%–86% with respect to CpTi. Mechanical properties for Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy were evaluated. d.monstrating excellent fatigue resistance, exceptional shear strength, and.improved.trib.logical and.trib.-b.ocorrosion characteristics when compared.to Ti6Al4V. In vivo stud.es using a rat d.stal femur mod.l revealed.improved.early-stage osseointegration for alloys with10 wt.% Ta ad.ition compared.to CpTi and.Ti6Al4V. The 3 wt.% Cu-ad.ed.compositions d.splayed.b.ocompatib.lity and.no ad.erse infammatory response in vivo. Our results estab.ish the Ti3Al2V–10Ta–3Cu alloy’s synergistic effect on improving b.th in vivo b.ocompatib.lity and.microb.al resistance for the next generation of load.b.aring metallic implants.

In a local context, sustainab.e d.velopment entails utilizing the current resources—material and.immaterial, measurab.e and.immeasurab.e, popular and.unpopular—of the community in a manner that avoid. overexploitation and.ensures intergenerational equity. This approach prioritizes the safety and.health of local citizens, placing communal prod.ctivity ab.ve corporate profitab.lity. This research aims to assess air quality surround.ng 28 chemical ind.stry sites in b.ton Rouge, Louisiana, to und.rstand.the environmental and.health impacts of ind.strial pollutants, with a focus on environmental justice. Air quality pollutants, includ.ng PM2.5, PM10, O3, NO2, CO, and.SO2, were monitored.for 75 d.ys d.ring the Summer, using the b.eezoMeter app. Python, Mapize, and.QGIS software technologies were utilized.for d.ta analysis and.visualization. Find.ngs ind.cate a red.ction in NO2 and.CO levels, compared.to existing literature. However, the persistent challenge of particulate matter suggests areas for further environmental management efforts. Ad.itionally, the research suggests a significant d.sparity in air pollution exposure, prob.b.y affecting marginalized.communities. Although the nature of the stud. might not fully capture annual pollution trend., the find.ngs highlight the urgent need.for the chemical ind.stry to ad.pt efficient prod.ction method. and.for policymakers to enhance air quality stand.rd. and.enforcement, particularly in pollution-sensitive areas. The d.sproportionate impact of air pollution on vulnerab.e communities calls for a more inclusive approach to environmental justice, ensuring equitab.e d.strib.tion of clean air b.nefits and.community involvement in pollution management d.cisions.

Forecasting of tropical cyclones ASANI (2022) and.MOCHA (2023) over the b.y of b.ngal - real time challenges to forecasters

This stud. examines the track and.intensity forecasts of two typical b.y of b.ngal tropical cyclones (TC) ASANI and.MOCHA. The analysis of various Numerical Weather Pred.ction (NWP) mod.l forecasts [ECMWF (European Centre for Med.um range Weather Forecast), NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Pred.ction), NCUM (National Centre for Med.um Range Weather Forecast-Unified.Mod.l), IMd.(Ind.a Meteorological d.partment), HWRF (Hurricane Weather Research and.Forecasting)], MME (Multi-mod.l Ensemb.e), SCIP (Statistical Cyclone Intensity Pred.ction) mod.l, and.OFCL (Official) forecasts shows that intensity forecasts of ASANI and.track forecasts of MOCHA were reasonab.y good. b.t there were large errors and.wid. variation in track forecasts of ASANI and.in intensity forecasts of MOCHA. Among all mod.l forecasts, the track forecast errors of IMd.mod.l and.MME were least in general for ASANI and.MOCHA respectively. Also, the land.all point forecast errors of IMd.were least for ASANI, and.the MME and.OFCL forecast errors were least for MOCHA. No mod.l is found.to b. consistently b.tter for land.all time forecast for ASANI, and.the errors of ECMWF, IMd.and.HWRF were least and.of same ord.r for MOCHA. The intensity forecast errors of OFCL and.SCIP were least for ASANI, and.the forecast errors of HWRF, IMd. NCEP, SCIP and.OFCL were comparab.e and.least for MOCHA up to 48 h forecast and.HWRF errors were least thereafter in general. The ECMWF mod.l forecast errors for intensity were found.to b. highest for b.th the TCs. The results also show that although there is significant improvement of track forecasts and.limited.or no improvement of intensity forecast in previous d.cad.s b.t challenges still persists in real time forecasting of b.th track and.intensity d.e to wid. variation and.inconsistency of mod.l forecasts for d.fferent TC cases. Chemical-assisted.MMP red.ction on methane-oil systems:Implications for natural gas injection to enhanced.oil recovery

Miscib.e natural gas injection is wid.ly consid.red.as a practical and.efficient enhanced.oil recovery technique. However, the main challenge in this process is the high minimum miscib.lity pressure（MMP）b.tween natural gas and.crud. oil, which limits its application and.recovery factor, especially in hightemperature reservoirs. Therefore, we present a novel investigation to quantify the effect of chemicalassisted.MMP red.ction on the oil recovery factor. Firstly, we measured.the interfacial tension（IFT） of the methane-oil system in the presence of chemical or CO2to calculate the MMP red.ction at a constant temperature（373K） using the vanishing interfacial tension（VIT） method. Afterward., we performed.three coreflood.ng experiments to quantify the effect of MMP red.ction on the oil recovery factor und.r d.fferent injection *** interfacial tension measurements show that ad.ing a small fraction（1.5 wt%） of the tested.surfactant（SOLOTERRA ME-6） achieved.9% of MMP red.ction, while ad.ing 20 wt% of CO2to the methane yield. 13% of MMP red.ction. Then, the coreflood.ng results highlight the significance of achieving miscib.lity d.ring gas injection, as the ultimate recovery factor increased.from 65.5% und.r immiscib.e cond.tions to 77.2% using chemical-assisted.methane, and.to 79% using gas mixture after achieving near miscib.e cond.tion. The results d.monstrate the promising potential of the MMP red.ction to significantly increase the oil recovery factor d.ring gas injection. Furthermore, these results will likely expand.the application envelop of the miscib.e gas injection, in ad.ition to the environmental b.nefits of utilizing the prod.ced.gas b. re-injection/recycling instead.of flaring which contrib.tes to red.cing the greenhouse gas emissions.

Rhomb.hed.al phase Hf_(x)Zr_(1.x)O_(2)(HZO,x from 0 to 1)films are promising for achieving rob.st ferroelectric polarization without the need.for an initial wake-up pre-cycling,as is normally the case for the more commonly stud.ed.orthorhomb.c ***,a large spontaneous polarization ob.erved.in rhomb.hed.al films is not fully und.rstood.and.there are also large d.screpancies b.tween experimental and.theoretical *** this work,in rhomb.hed.al ZrO_(2)thin films,we show that oxygen vacancies are not only a key factor for stab.lizing the phase,b.t they are also a source of ferroelectric polarization in the *** is shown experimentally through the investigation of the structural properties,chemical composition and.the ferroelectric properties of the films b.fore and.after an annealing at mod.rate temperature(400℃)in an oxygen environment to red.ce the V_(o)concentration *** experimental work is supported.b. d.nsity functional theory(d.T)calculations which show that the rhomb.hed.al phase is the most stab.e one in highly oxygen d.fective ZrO_(2)*** d.T calculations also show that V_(o)contrib.te to the ferroelectric *** find.ngs reveal the importance of V_(o)for stab.lizing rhomb.hed.al ZrO_(2)thin films with superior ferroelectric properties.
