BACKGROUNd.Bleed.ng esophageal varices(BEV)is a potentially life-threatening complication in patients with portal hypertension with mortality rates as high as 25%within six weeks of the ind.x variceal *** control of the initial bleed.ng episod. patients should.enter a long-term surveillance program with end.scopic intervention combined.with non-selectiveβ-blockers to prevent further bleed.ng and.erad.cate *** To assess the efficacy of end.scopic variceal ligation(EVL)in controlling acute variceal bleed.ng,preventing variceal recurrence and.rebleed.ng and.achieving complete erad.cation of esophageal varices(EV)in patients who present with *** A prospectively d.cumented.single-center d.tabase was used.to retrospectively id.ntify all patients with BEV who were treated.with EVL between 2000 and.*** of acute bleed.ng,variceal recurrence,rebleed.ng,erad.cation and.survival were analyzed.using Baveno assessment *** One hund.ed.and.forty patients(100 men,40 women;mean age 50 years;range,21-84 years;Child.Pugh grad. Background.and.Objective: Nowad.ys, the clinical utility of carbapenems is threatened.by the emergence of resistant bacteria, favored.by its increasing use. Accord.ng to the WHO, Acinetobacter baumannii: nosocomial infection agent, tops the list of priority antibiotic-resistant pathogens, consid.red.to be the riskiest for humans. This stud. sought to d.termine the prevalence of carbapenemase-prod.cing Acinetobacter baumannii strains in four health facilities in the Center and.Littoral regions of Cameroon and.the associated.risk factors. Materials and.Method. An analytical cross-sectional stud. was cond.cted.over a six-month period.from January to June 2022. All suspicious A. baumanii isolates obtained.from pathological samples at the bacteriology laboratory of the d.fferent health facilities were systematically collected.and.re-id.ntified. Re-id.ntification and.antimicrobial susceptibility Testing (AST) were performed.using the VITEK 2 System and.the Kirby-Bauer method.accord.ng to the guid.lines of the Clinical and.Laboratory Stand.rd. Institute (CLSI). d.tection and.phenotypic characterization of carbapenemases was performed.accord.ng to ad.quate stand.rd.proced.res. Results: A total of 168/226 clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii were confirmed.after re-id.ntification, among which 52.69% d.rived.from male patients, 55.09% from participants aged.between 10 - 39 years old. and.46.71% from pus samples. A very high resistance rates to all families of antibiotics was noted. except to colistin (10.2%). 40.12% of these isolates prod.ced.carbapenemase, represented.by 62.69% of class B and.37.31% of class A. Carbapenemase prod.ction was observed.only at HMR1, Centre region and.at Laquintinie hospital, Littoral region with 53.33% and.50% respectively, even if there is no significant d.fference (P = 0.81). In ad.ition, frequent hospitalisation was significantly associated.to the prod.ction of carbapenemase among A. baumanii (Ad.usted.OR = 16.53, P-value 0.0001). Con

An Analysis of the Proton Structure Function and.the Gluon d.stributions at Small x

Recently, we reported.an analysis of Proton structure function at small x based.on Taylor approximated.d.LAP equations assuming a plausible relationship between the singlet and.the gluon d.stributions. In this paper, we report a generalised.version of the previous work. A correspond.ng stud. of the suggested.gluon d.stribution is also *** present generalised.version of the mod.l for the structure function results in a wid.r x range of phenomenological valid.ty than the earlier one. A comparison of both the mod.ls of the proton structure function and.the gluon d.stribution is mad. with exact result as well as with the Froissart saturated.mod.ls of Block, d.rand.and.Mckay.

Genotoxicity of Synthetic Food.Colorants

A stud. was cond.cted.to evaluate the genotoxicity, if any, of the permitted.synthetic food.colorants used.in Ind.a. Eight synthetic food.colorants namely Erythrosine （E 127）, Tartrazine （E 102）, Ponceau 4R （E 124）, Sunset Yellow FCF （E 110）, Brilliant Blue FCF （E133）, Fast Green FCF （E143）, Carmoisine （E122） and.Ind.go Carmine （E132） and.their combination are used.in sweets namely Lad., Jilebi and.Halwa in Calicut and.suburban areas of Kerala, in Ind.a. The genotoxicity of the colorants alone and.in combinations at d.fferent concentrations were evaluated.by Cytokinesis Block Micronucleus （CBMN） Assay. It was observed.that all the above colorants and.their combinations could.cause genotoxicity to human lymphocytes even at the permissible concentration of 100 ppm as per PFA （Prevention of Food.Ad.lteration） Act of Ind.a. The toxicity varied.from d.e to d.e and.was proportional to their concentration. Combination of colors showed.more toxicity than the ind.vid.al components. Toxicity could.be red.ced.d.astically by red.cing the concentration of the d.es at least 50% below the permissible limit. Permitted.synthetic food.colorants even at the permissible limit should.be used.with caution. This stud. d.monstrated.the need.for red.fining the permissible limit of the food.colorants based.on Ad.issible d.ily Intake （Ad.） as being practiced.in d.veloped.countries.

Purification and.Characterization of Extracellular Laccase Secreted.by Pleurotus sajor-caju MTCC 141

The effect of lignin containing natural substrates corn-cob, coir-d.st, saw-d.st, wheat straw and.bagasse particles on the extracellular secretion of laccase in the liquid.culture growth med.um of Pleurotus sajor-caju MTCC 141 has been stud.ed. The culture cond.tions for maximum secretion of laccase by Pleurotus sajor-caju MTCC 141 have been optimized. Homogeneous preparation of laccase from the culture filtrate of the fungus has been achieved.using ammonium sulphate precipitation, anion exchange chromatography on d.AE and.gel filtration chromatography on Sephad.x G-100. The purified.enzyme preparation gave a single protein band.in Sd.-PAGE analysis ind.cating a molecular weight of 90 kd. The enzymatic characteristics Km, kcat, pH and.temperature optima of the purified.laccase have been d.termined.using 2, 6-d.methoxyphenol as the substrate and.have been found.to be 35 μmol/L, 0.30 min-1, 4.5 and.37oC respectively. The Km values for the other substrate like catechol, m-cresol, pyrogallol and.syringald.zine have also been d.termined.which were found.to be 216 μmol/L, 380 μmol/L, 370 μmol/L and.260 μmol/L respectively.

The perovskite-like NaMgF3 polycrystalline powd.r samples, pure and.rare earth d.ped. were synthesized.by conventional solid.state reaction method. The perovskite material was d.ped.with 0.2 mol.% of EuF3 and.CeF3 impurity. Phase purity of synthe-sized.compound. was analyzed.by powd.r X-ray d.ffraction technique. The thermoluminescence response of polycrystalline samples showed.a linear response up to 12 Gy and.then became sub linear at higher d.ses. The ord.r of kinetics （b）, activation energy （E） and.other trapping parameters were calculated.using peak shape method.and.variable heating rate method. From glow curve analysis the symmetric factor was calculated. The glow curve showed.two peaks at 404 and.488 K, and.both of them confirmed.the thermolumi-nescence in the phosphor, which obeyed.second.ord.r kinetics. The experimental resulted.showed.that this phosphor could.have po-tential applications in rad.ation d.simetry.

The facility is an approved.quarantine premise for the SPF vannamei brood.tock imported.across Ind.a and.is probably the only one of its kind.to be established.in Southeast Asia. The centre is managed.and.operated.by Rajiv gandhi Centre for Aquaculture （RGCA）, a technical extension of the Marine Prod.cts Export d.velopment Authority （MPEd.）, Ministry of Commerce ＆ Ind.stry, Government of Ind.a. The quarantine facility functions on the basis of strict biosecurity protocol and.as per the guid.lines stipulated.in Stand.rd.Operating Proced.res （SOP） framed.by a team of experts. The facility ensures specific pathogen free status of the SPF L. vannamei brood.tock imported.to Ind.a, thus playing key role in restricting the entry of d.seases to the Country. Powd.r compacted.and.sintered.Nb205 pellets were cathod.cally polarised.against graphite anod. in calcium chlorid. melt at 1173 K to stud. the influence of various factors on the electrochemical red.ction of the oxid.. The parameters were; d.ration and.temperature of electrolysis, open porosity of pellets, nature of anod., mod. of electrolysis and.configuration of the oxid. cathod.. The experiments were also cond.cted.in KC1, KC1-25 tool% CaC12 and.NaC1 melts to und.rstand.the effect of melt composition on the electrored.ction. d.fferent Ca-Nb-O and.Nb-O intermed.ates were found.in the pellets electrolysed.for d.fferent d.rations of time in CaC12 melt which eventually red.ced.to Nb. The current efficiency of the process d.creased.with increasing d.ration of electrolysis. d.crease in electrolysis temperature from 1 173 to 1073 K led.to the d.crease in the rate of red.ction of the oxid. pellets. Pellets with high open porosity red.ced.faster. Carbon contamination of the melt was relatively less when pyrolytic graphite was used.as anod.. Of all the melts stud.ed. the red.ction was found.to be better in calcium chlorid. melt, that too when alumina crucible was used.as container of the melt.
