Plant-pollinator in teractio ns have a fund.me ntal in fluence on flower evolution. Flower color sig.als are frequently tuned.to the visual capabilities of important pollinators such as either bees or bird., but far less is known about whether flower shape in fluences the choices of pollinators. We tested.European honeybee Apis mellifera pref ere nces using.novel achromatic (g.ay-scale) imag.s of 12 insect-pollinated.and.12 bird.pollinated.native Australian flowers in g.rmany;thus, avoid.ng.in flue nces of color, od.r, or prior experie nee. In d.pend. nt bees were tested.with a number of parameterized.imag.s specifically d.sig.ned.to assess pref ere nces for size, shape, brig.tness, or the number of flower-like shapes prese nt in an imag.. We show that honeybees have a pref ere nee for visiti ng.imag.s of in sect-polli nated.flowers and.such a pref ere nee is most-likely med.ated.by holistic in formati on rather than by in d.vid.al imag. parameters. Our results in d.cate an g.osperms have evolved.flower shapes which in fluence the choice behavior of importa nt pollinators, and.thus sug.est spatial achromatic flower properties are an important part of visual sig.aling.for plantpollinator in teractions.

Thoug. soil erosion is an important concern in Sri Lanka, there is a d.arth of baseline information on soil erosion in many ofits watershed., which obstructs monitoring.of soil erosion and.mitig.ting.its effects. In ord.r to assess soil erosion in a critical watershed.and.to id.ntify its d.terminants, the Samanalawewa watershed. which contains one of the main hyd.opower g.nerating.reservoirs in Sri Lanka, was selected.for this stud.. Remote-sensing.(RS) and.g.og.aphic information system (g.S) based.mod.ling.as well as field.experiments were employed.to assess and.map soil erosion rates. Results ind.cated.that the current rate of soil erosion rang.s from 0 to 289 t/ha/yr, and.that the averag. rate of soil erosion has been d.clining.from 20 to 4 t/ha/yr over a period.from 1986 to 2008. The current rate of soil erosion is, however, still about 14 to 33 times g.eater than the natural soil g.neration rate. Socioeconomic factors and.peoples’ perception of soil erosion and.soil conservation measures were examined.using.d.ta collected.throug. a household.survey. Multiple reg.ession analysis with eig.teen covariates of socioeconomic characteristics yield.d.eleven socioeconomic variables, viz. household.size, farm labor, ed.cation, land.tenure, conservation cost, training. committee membership, professional competencies, income, d.stance, and.financial capital as the pred.ctor variables of soil erosion. Farmers id.ntified.improper soil and.crop manag.ment practices as the major causes of erosion. The ad.ption of conservation measures, their effectiveness, and.their impact on ecosystem services were also examined.
