Prevalence and dietetic management of mild gastrointestinal disorders in milk-fed infants

AIM: To assess the prevalence of mild gastrointestinal disorders in milk-fed infants in paediatric practice, and to evaluate the effectiveness and satisfaction with dietetic ***: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was first carried out. A total of 285 paediatricians included 3487 children seen during a period of one week. In a second phase an observational, prospective and multicentre study was conducted and 2069 milk-fed infants with mild gastrointestinal disorders (colic, constipation, regurgitation and diarrhoea) were included. There was a baseline visit (start of treatment) and a final visit four weeks later. The effectiveness of the various Novalac formulas, as well as the satisfaction of the parents/tutors and paediatricians with the dietetic treatment were assessed at the final ***: The prevalence of mild gastrointestinal disorders was 27.8% of all paediatrician consultations (9.2%, 7.8%, 6.1% and 4.6% in relation to colic, constipation, regurgitation and diarrhoea, respectively). The several Novalac adapted milk formulas resolved 88.4% of the mild gastrointestinal disorders. depending on the type of disorder, differences in response rate were observed. The highest effectiveness was recorded with respect to diarrhoea (92.6%), followed by constipation (91.6%), colic (87.6%) and regurgitation (81%). Overall, 91% of the paediatricians and 88.8% of the parents/tutors were satisfied or very satisfied with the Novalac adapted milk ***: Mild gastrointestinal disorders show a high prevalence in paediatric practice. The Novalac adapted milk formulas have been shown to be effective in treating mild gastrointestinal disorders in milk-fed infants in the context of routine clinical practice.

Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes implication in central proliferation and neurogenesis

Type 2 diabetes （T2d） is an important risk factor for developing dementias, including Alzheimer＇s disease （Ad）. Hyperinsulin- emia and glucose intolerance, as features of T2d, might increase the neurodegeneration process, synaptic loss and brain atrophy, leading to cognitive impairment observed in Ad. Also, adult neurogenesis seems to be impaired in Ad models. Therefore, we have studied morphological alterations, cell proliferation and neurogenesis in the central nervous system （CNS） from a classical model of T2d, the db/db mouse, and in a prediabetes insulin-resistant model, obtained after long-term high fat diet （HFd） administration to C57B1/6 mice. db/db mice showed an age-dependent cortical and hippocampal atrophy, whereas in HFd mice cortex and hippocampus were preserved. Neurogen- esis and cell proliferation were increased in young db/db mice, when compared with control mice, whereas no differences were detected in the prediabetic model. We also detected significant correlations between metabolic parameters and central atrophy, altered proliferation and neurogenesis in the central nervous system. Altogether these data support that glycaemia control in elderly patients, could help to control central alterations and improve dementia prognosis.

Introduction: d-Aspartate is an endogenous amino acid involved in LH and testosterone release in humans. In this study we investigate the impact of nutritional supplementation of sodium d-aspartate on the improvement of sperm quality in sub-fertile patients and the rate of pregnancies that occurred with their partners. Materials and Methods: A group of 30 patients affected by oligo-asthenozoospermia and a group of 30 patients affected by asthenozoospermia were treated with a daily dose of sodium d-aspartate for 90 days. After which, the change in spermatozoa concentration and their motility and the pregnancies that occurred with their partners were recorded. Results: We found that the supplementation of d-aspartate significantly increased the concentration and the motility of spermatozoa. In oligo- asthenozoospermic patients the increase of sperm concentration was found to be 2.0-fold, P Conclusions:Treatment of sub-fertile patients with sodium d-aspartate improved the number and the motility of the spermatozoa and consequently improved the rate of pregnancies of their partners.

diet-Induced Alteration of the Murine Intestinal Microbiome Following Antibiotic Ablation

Mouse models of antibiotic-induced ablation of the intestinal microbiome have been used to study the microbiome in health and disease. The fecal microbiomes of mice treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics while being fed different laboratory chows were analyzed by Gram stain, quantitative flow cytometry, bacterial cell culture, next generation sequencing of the V3 regions of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene, microscopy, and sequence analysis of the tuf gene. Noncultivatable gram-positive cocci and cultivatable yeast were the microorganisms most readily detected in feces of antibiotic-treated mice fed a defined diet that utilizes casein as a protein source, maltodextrin 10 and sucrose as sources of carbohydrates, and lard as the major source of fat. High-throughput sequencing of the variable regions of the 16S rRNA gene and tuf gene sequencing identified the major bacterial phylotype as Lactococcus. The mouse chow was heavily laden with noncultivatable Lactococcus, which dominated the intestinal flora after consumption. The microbiome of antibiotic-treated mice fed a grain-based diet (mainly wheat, corn and alfalfa) consisted predominantly of a member of the Enterobacteriaceae identified as Escherichia coli, and yeast was not detected by culture or Gram stain. Appearance of intestinal yeast by culture and Gram stain was dependent on the specific chow, although yeast was not detected by culture or Gram stain in the chow. We conclude that bacteria found in food sources can influence qualitative and quantitative assessments of the fecal microbiome, at least in the context of antibiotic therapy, and potentially confound molecular studies that assess the effects of diet on the intestinal ecology. Not surprisingly, different food sources can influence the microbiome, particularly in the context of antibiotic-mediated ablation of the intestinal microbiome. Whether and how the food-derived dead bacteria alter intestinal physiology needs to be determined.

研究了12—42日龄大黄鱼(Pseudosciaena crocea R.)稚鱼蛋氨酸需要量。以白鱼粉、磷虾粉和乌贼粉作蛋白源,通过添加L-晶体氨基酸使饲料与大黄鱼卵的必需氨基酸组成一致(蛋氨酸除外),制成6种等氮(8.8%)等能(16.65 kJ/g)的微黏合饲料。L-蛋氨酸梯度依次为饲料的1.19%、1.62%、2.18%、2.65%、3.13%和3.66%,或饲料蛋白的2.17%、2.95%、3.95%、4.81%、5.70%和6.65%。以生物饵料(丰年虫无节幼体和桡足类)作对照组。每处理设3个重复,每桶(180 L)内随机放3500尾初始体重为(1.93±0.11)mg的12日龄大黄鱼稚鱼。实验为期30d。结果显示,稚鱼的成活率随饲料蛋氨酸水平的升高而升高,在2.18%蛋氨酸水平时达到最高,之后无显著变化。特定生长率(SGR)随饲料蛋氨酸水平的升高而升高,在2.18%蛋氨酸水平时达到最高,之后则呈下降趋势。对照组稚鱼的成活率和SGR最高,均显著高于蛋氨酸组(P<0.05)。各组间稚鱼体脂肪和灰分差异不显著,但体蛋白随饲料蛋氨酸水平的升高而升高,在2.65%蛋氨酸水平时达到最高,之后则稍微下降;对照组鱼体蛋白和各必需氨基酸含量均显著高于其他组(P<0.05)。经二次多项式模型分析,12—42日龄大黄鱼稚鱼的蛋氨酸需要量为饲料的2.58%或饲料蛋白的4.69%。

Anatomical features associated with venous congestion in dIEP flap using CT angiography with three-dimensional reconstruction

Aim: Computed tomography angiography (CTA) using three-dimensional (3d) virtual reconstruction has been increasingly used in planning deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (dIEP) breast reconstruction. Although the most common complication associated with this surgery is diffuse venous congestion, its origin remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the anatomical characteristics of the anterior abdominal wall vessels that could predict venous congestion, using CTA with 3d virtual reconstruction. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted and a total of 169 dIEP flaps were reviewed. An abdominal CTA with 3d virtual reconstruction was analyzed with regard to anatomical features of the abdominal wall vessels. Seven venous congestive cases were identified. For each case, 3 controls that had not exhibited any vascular complications were randomly selected. Results: The global venous congestion rate was 4.14%. No statistically significant differences were found between the groups' superficial inferior epigastric vein (SIEV) diameter (P = 0.915), number of branches of SIEV (P = 0.371), number of perforators per flap (P = 0.255), flap subcutaneous tissue thickness (P = 0.652), direct communications between SIEV-perforators (P = 0.418), and communications of both SIEVs across the abdominal midline (P = 0.371). Conclusion: The present study provided new information concerning the identification of the controversial anatomical features associated with venous congestion in dIEP flaps. CTA and 3d virtual reconstruction were useful tools for evaluating the abdominal wall anatomy and for planning dIEP breast surgery, but neither for predicting nor preventing the diffuse congestive phenomenon.
