Context/objectives: The COVId-19 pandemic has disrupted all programs, potentially impacting access to health services for children under 5 years old. The Far North of Cameroon is one of the northern regions with a prevalence of malnourished children ranging from 5% to 10%. due to the barrier measures implemented to combat the pandemic, many parents are reluctant to take their children to healthcare facilities. Some of these children were benefiting from the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) program prior to the COVId-19 outbreak. The main objective of this research is to assess the impact of COVId-19 on access to health services for children under 5 in the Mayo Tsanaga (MT) and Logone & Chari (LC) departments. The implementation of barrier measures could significantly increase the risk of malnutrition among children under 5 years old. Method: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted in the MT and LC departments, employing both retrospective and prospective approaches. data was collected through questionnaire, interview guide and a review of existing data prior to the pandemic (dHIS 2). Kobo Collect software was used for data collection, and R software was used for analysis. Results: Children who benefitted from the ACC program during the COVId-19 period were found to have a lower prevalence of malnutrition compared to those who did not benefit (OR: 0.09, CI {0.0 - 0.44}). Conclusion: COVId-19 has led to a decrease in the utilization of health facilities in both departments of the study, resulting in an increase in health issues such as malnutrition among children under 5 years old. Various policies have been implemented to improve attendance at health facilities.

Analysis of the determinants of Floods in Numan Town, Nigeria

This study aimed at investigating the causes of floods in Numan Town with particular reference to the 2012 floods. Three residential areas： Gangare, Gwadda Mallam and Green Village were selected for the study. Hydrological, SRTM （shuttle radar topography mission） digital elevation model, secondary and primary data were utilized. A total of 180 questionnaires were administered to the residents in equal proportion using systematic random sampling. ArcGIS 10.0 and Excel were used for the analysis. The study revealed that the major causes of flood in the area include discharge of water from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon and Kiri dam in Adamawa State. Others include heavy rainfall, topography, and lack of adherence to development control provisions which resulted in construction of residential areas on flood plains. Many of the residents do not have legal title to their plots and this constitutes a very serious constraint to provision of drainages and solid waste disposal services. To ameliorate the devastating effects of floods, the study recommends relocation of residents of flood prone areas, provision of solid waste management services, and construction of more drainages. In addition, the town planning authorities and community leaders should collaborate to ensure that houses are built in flood plains.

The Role of Private Water Vending in Nigeian Peri-Urban Informal Settlements: Implication for Policy Makers

This paper presents a study of water vending in 3 informal settlements of Yola North in Adamawa State of Nigeria. These settlements represent the fast growing urban areas often dwelling in unplanned and unsecured tenure. Access to safe water supply has great influence on the health, economic productivity and quality of life of the people. But meeting this need is one of the major challenges facing the urban communities of Nigeria today. A field survey was conducted in the area with 100 observations of households in each of the three informal settlements. These settlements are Sabongari -University village, Vinikilang and Wuro Jabbe. The survey solicited for response concerning household water source, water per capita use and household size. Findings revealed that about 92% of respondent in Sabongari-University village, 66% in Vinikilang and 87% in Wuro Jabbe depend on vended water from borehole, hand dug well as well as surface water sources which are delivered by hand pushed trucks. Owing to the absence of piped water networks in the study area, households are forced to rely on available water sources which are precursor to water borne diseases. It is advocated that the public agencies should evolve special programs for regularizing informal settlements, meaning the legalization of land tenure, layout corrections and service upgrading if service is to meet the poor informal dwellers.

本文研究了政府扶持、研发,信息通讯技术和技术购买对马里共和国中小型企业产品和过程创新的影响。基于世界银行企业调查数据,通过Tobit回归发现:政府支持对产品和流程创新都具有积极影响,而研发,信息和通信技术,技术采购中介政府支持对中小企业创新的影响,且这些中介取决于创新维度是产品创新还是过程创新。本文建议政府官员如果要支持马里中小企业的创新活动,则应继续关注风险投资。本文还使首席执行官知道风险承担最终将如何积极影响其小型公司的创新产出。

Bilateral Chronic Subdural Hematoma after Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy in a Child: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Hydrocephalus had been managed by ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) or endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) since several years. But these two different technics had some complications that must be managed promptly to avoid eventual fatal evolution. Chronic subdural hematomas after ETV is among these complications and is a very rarely situation observed in our department. This rare event associated with malaria in a child is considered to have a high mortality. Here we report a rare case of bilateral chronic subdural hematoma occurring in a 4-month-old boy after ETV and we discuss the likely pathogenesis and the difficulties of management.

Complementing Water Supply through Rainwater Harvesting in Some Selected Villages of Sahel Savannah Ecological Zone in Borno State Northeastern Nigeria

One of the greatest environmental challenges that confront rural communities in Nigeria especially in Borno state is scarcity of water supply. Rainwater harvesting can reduce over dependence on centralized piped water supply and checkmate climate change. This study in two rural communities determined the water per capita use, examined water sources and then estimated the amount of rainwater that can be harvested by households in these villages. The villages are Kukurpu and Yelwa Bam in Hawul local government area of Borno state Nigeria. The choice of the villages is justified on the basis of their location in the semi-arid region of the Sahel ecological zone with lesser rainfall compared to other parts in the region. Lack of adequate access to water supply is precursor to water related diseases and challenge to sustainable development. This study used scheduled interview with households and 100 household were surveyed using simple random sampling. In each of the village, 50 observations were made Results revealed that 87% of the households rely water from hand dug wells, ephemeral streams and boreholes equipped with manual hand pumps that are susceptible to drought and frequent breakdown. Borno state where the villages are located had a mean annual rainfall of 860 mm from 1980 to 2009;however, the annual rainwater harvesting potential was put at 51.21 m3. Although over 80% are aware of rainwater harvesting practices only 2% of households harvest rainwater due to the seasonality of rain-fall coupled with inadequate water storage facilities. There is therefore the need to embark on massive rainwater harvesting with corresponding water reservoir as a way to reduce the effects of the five months dry spell experienced in the region.

Intraorbital Mature Teratoma in Infant

Intraorbital mature teratoma is a rare congenital tumor of slow evolution that can compromise vision. Objectives: We describe the clinical and therapeutic aspects of a mature teratoma in childhood with a literature review. Clinical Case: It was a 12-year-old who had a progressive straight monocular exophthalmia with blindness. CT without and with contrast injection showed a double component intracolonic invasive tumor with partial contrast acquisition after injection. This tumor respected the bone walls of the orbit. The treatment was surgical by conjunctival dissection of the tumor and enucleation. This allowed the tumor to be fully excised under an operating microscope. The operating procedures were simple. Anatomopathology confirmed the nature of the tumor by visualizing the presence of a squamous epithelium by the high-magnification (X20) method of hematoxylin and eosin. Conclusion: Mature intraorbital teratoma is an embryonic tumor with early diagnosis the finding in an older child remains rare. Complete surgical excision allows healing.

Traumatic Spinal Cord Injuries in Gold Miners in Mali: Preliminary Study on 76 Cases

Introduction: Gold panning is the research and artisanal exploitation of gold in the auriferous areas (rivers or others). Traumatisms arising from these activities are due to severe spinal cord injury and generally affect young people in full activity. They constitute a real social handicap in Mali and even in Africa. The aim of our study is to share our expertise in the management of these vertebro-medullary traumasin these miners who currently escape to all controls in Mali. Material and Methods: From 2013 to 2016, 76 Traumatic Spine Cord Injuries (TSCI) were treated in the department of Neurosurgery of “Hôpital du Mali”. There were 73 males (96.05%) versus 03 Females (3.95%), aged between 21 - 43 years old. Results: All of our patients were admitted with deficit differing from paraparesis to tetraplegia. According to Frankel scale, we found 59 patients with complete deficits (A grade, 77.63%), and incomplete deficits in 17 cases (12 grade B, 04 grade C, 01 grade d). The X-ray standard radiographies were done in 24 cases (31.58%) from which 02 patients had been operated with these data. CT scan centered on the injured spinal segment was performed in 74 cases (97.37%). The lumbar spine was affected in 39 cases, followed by thoracolumbar junction in 19 cases and thoracic spine in 16 cases. The cervical spine was only interested in two cases. Fractures dislocations are the most frequently lesions encountered in our series. The surgical approach was performed in 74 patients and 02 patients received conservative treatment. Conclusion: Traumatic Spinal Cord Injuries (TSCI) among miners are a real disaster in Mali and continue to plague thousands of families or increase the number of disabled people in our society. It is the only work, where the person concerned is making of his own grave. And according to witnesses, several miners remained at the bottom of the wells.
