Perspective on the use of synthetic biology in rudimentary food fermentations

Rudimentary food fermentation can be defined as a spontaneous process of conversion of food components through enzy-matic action.A great variety of fermented foods are produced using spontaneous approaches;however,cocoa and coffee represent the most important agricultural commodities on international *** a manner to increase the efficiency of these processes,starter cultures have been developed and applied under field *** selection process begins with the recovery of microbial strains from spontaneous fermentation through phenotypic and metabolic ***,mutation-based breeding is used to develop and improve well-adapted starter *** advances in synthetic biology,especially in the last decade,the development of robust cellular fabrications with high fermentative capacity has become easier-largely due to the development of genomic approaches,such as next-generation sequencing techniques,CRISPR-Cas system and bioinformatics *** review brings prospects on the use of synthetic biology to design new robust strains for use in cocoa and coffee fermentations,but which can be extended to other rudimentary *** addition,metabolic traits and target genes(e.g.,UvrA,RecA,GPd1,and GPP2)are proposed as a starting point for the improvement of cocoa and coffee ***,the regulatory and safety requirements for these food crops are *** review aims to stimulate research on the process of fermentation and the associated synthetic biology tools to produce fermented food efficiently and sustainably.

Studies on fertilization management of species native to the Amazon for energy plantations contribute to the diversity of species use and reduce biological risk due to the excessive use of clones or hybrids of *** study evaluates the effect of precipitation seasonality and phosphorus and potassium fertilization on gas exchange in a Tachigali vulgaris *** levels of P(zero,65.2,130.4 kg ha^(-1))and three of K(zero,100.0,200.0 kg ha^(-1))were applied in a 3×3 factorial randomized block *** exchange measurements were conducted in April and November *** low rainfall,high irradiance period,photo synthetic rates were up to four times higher than in the high rainfall period,reaching 20.3μmol m^(-2)s^(-1)in the treatment with 130.4 g kg^(-1)of P and 100.0 g kg^(-1)of *** analysis and principal component analysis reduced the initial eight gas exchange variables to two and three principal components in periods of high and low rainfall,*** multivariate method used in this study readily identified variations in the variables as a function of rainfall,with high reliability in explaining the data set.

We present a new tracksite with multiple dinosaur tracks from the lowermost Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Cape Espichel (Sesimbra, Portugal). The tracks are localized on three beds on the top carbonate beds of the Areia do Mastro Formation. Those bioclastic, nodular limestones were deposited in a very shallow subtidal-intertidal, restricted lagoon environment. The track surfaces are very dinoturbated, with a substantial number of tracks. Several tracks assign to sauropods, ornithopods and theropods dinosaurs were recorded. due to heavy bioturbation and the preservation conditions, it is not possible to define trackways;some preliminary work done on the tracks could disclose some behaviours of their producers. Several species of carnivore and herbivore dinosaurs crossed that large area at different times. Herbivores may have used the lagoon margin as passage between feeding spots, while carnivores frequented the area to hunt in groups or individually.

The disposal of mining tailings has increasingly focused on the use of dry *** structures offer more security since they use filtered and compacted *** of the construction method and the heights achieved,the material that compounds the structure can be subjected to different stress paths along the failure *** theoretical framework considered in the design of these structures generally is the critical state soil mechanics(CSSM).However,the data in the literature concerning the uniqueness of critical state line(CSL)is still controversial as the soil is subjected to different stress *** respect to tailings,this question is even more *** paper studies two tailings with different gradings due to the beneficial processes over extension and compression paths.A series of drained and undrained triaxial tests was conducted over a range of initial densities and stress *** the q-p'plane,different critical stress ratio(M)values were obtained for compression and extension stress ***,the critical state friction angle is very similar with a slightly higher critical state friction angle for extension *** stress path dependent CSLs were obtained in the n-lnp0 plane with the extension tests below the CSL defined in *** the fines content,the studied tailings presented very similar M and critical state friction angle ***,the fines content af-fects the volumetric behavior of the studied tailings and the CSLs on the n-lnp0 plane shift downwards with the increasing fines content for compression and extension *** relation to dilatancy analysis,the fines content did not present an evident influence on the dilatancy of the ***,different values of mean stress ratio N were obtained between compression and extension tests and can corroborate the existence of non-unique CSLs for these materials.

Machines that mimic humans have inspired scientists for *** soft robotic hands are a good example of such an endeavor,featuring intrinsic material compliance and continuous motion to deal with uncertainty and adapt to unstructured *** research led to impactful achievements in functional designs,modeling,fabrication,and control of soft ***,the full realization of life-like movements is still challenging to achieve,often based on trial-and-error considerations from design to fabrication,consuming time and *** this study,a soft robotic hand is proposed,composed of soft actuator cores and an exoskeleton,featuring a multimaterial design aided by finite element analysis(FEA)to define the hand geometry and promote finger’s *** actuators are fabricated using molding,and the exoskeleton is 3d-printed in a single *** oN-oFF controller keeps the set fingers’inner pressures related to specific bending angles,even in the presence of *** FEA numerical results were validated by experimental tests,as well as the ability of the hand to grasp objects with different shapes,weights,and *** integrated solution will make soft robotic hands more available to people,at a reduced cost,avoiding the time-consuming design-fabrication trial-and-error processes.

Power Curve Modelling for Wind Turbine Using Artificial Intelligence Tools and Pre-established Inference Criteria

We propose a new way to develop non-parametric models of power curves using artificial intelligence *** parametric model and eight non-parametric models are developed to emulate the behavior described by the power curve of the wind farms.A comparison between the power curve models based on artificial neural networks(ANNs)and those based on fuzzy logic are also *** of the power curve models based on ANNs and fuzzy inference systems(FISs)are used as well as two new FISs with the proposed new *** initial pre-training is proposed,resulting from the characteristics derived from the expert inference followed by a transformation of a fuzzy Mamdani system into a fuzzy Sugeno *** the presented values by the error indicators are comparable,the results show that the new pre-trained FIS models have better precision compared with the ANN and FIS *** comparative study is conducted in two wind farms located in northeastern *** proposed method is a relevant alternative to improve power curve approximation based on an FIS.

Quantifying relationships between rooting traits and water uptake under drought in Mediterranean barley and durum wheat

In Mediterranean regions drought is the major factor limiting spring barley and durum wheat grain yields. This study aimed to compare spring barley and durum wheat root and shoot responses to drought and quantify relationships between root traits and water uptake under terminal *** spring barley（Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Rum） and two durum wheat Mediterranean cultivars（Triticum turgidum L. var durum cvs Hourani and Karim） were examined in soil‐column experiments under well watered and drought conditions. Root system architecture traits, water uptake, and plant growth were measured. Barley aerial biomass and grain yields were higher than for durum wheat cultivars in well watered conditions. drought decreased grain yield more for barley（47%） than durum wheat（30%, Hourani）. Root‐to‐shoot dry matter ratio increased for durum wheat under drought but not for barley, and root weight increased for wheat in response todrought but decreased for barley. The critical root length density（RLd） and root volume density（RVd） for 90% available water capture for wheat were similar to（cv. Hourani） or lower than（cv. Karim） for barley depending on wheat cultivar. For both species, RVd accounted for a slightly higher proportion of phenotypic variation in water uptake under drought than RLd.

Automatic detection of CoVId-19 Infection Using Chest X-Ray Images Through Transfer Learning

The new coronavirus(CoVId-19),declared by the World Health organization as a pandemic,has infected more than 1 million people and killed more than 50 *** infection caused by CoVId-19 can develop into pneumonia,which can be detected by a chest X-ray exam and should be treated *** this work,we propose an automatic detection method for CoVId-19 infection based on chest X-ray *** datasets constructed for this study are composed of194 X-ray images of patients diagnosed with coronavirus and 194 X-ray images of healthy *** few images of patients with CoVId-19 are publicly available,we apply the concept of transfer learning for this *** use different architectures of convolutional neural networks(CNNs)trained on Image Net,and adapt them to behave as feature extractors for the X-ray ***,the CNNs are combined with consolidated machine learning methods,such as k-Nearest Neighbor,Bayes,Random Forest,multilayer perceptron(MLP),and support vector machine(SVM).The results show that,for one of the datasets,the extractor-classifier pair with the best performance is the Mobile Net architecture with the SVM classifier using a linear kernel,which achieves an accuracy and an F1-score of 98.5%.For the other dataset,the best pair is dense Net201 with MLP,achieving an accuracy and an F1-score of 95.6%.Thus,the proposed approach demonstrates efficiency in detecting CoVId-19 in X-ray images.
