Using Clove Essential Oil to Increase the Nutritional Potential of Industrial Fresh Double Cream Cheese

The present study was a potential application of Clove Essential Oil (CEO) in industrial fresh double cream cheese in order to lengthen its conservation and to improve its antioxidant potential. In this work, CEO was extracted by hydro distillation, and then analyzed by GC-MS;24 components of clove essential oil were identified. Eugenol was the major component (57.66%). Its antimicrobial properties against E. coli, Salmonella enteritidis and Staphylococcus aureus, were evaluated by disc diffusion method and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). As for, the antioxidant activity of CEO was evaluated by DPPH assay method. An optimum content of CEO (0.37%) was calculated by mixing plan carried out by Expert design software and then added to studied cheese. The responses, fixed from the beginning, for this mixing plan were: minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), antioxidant activity (IC50), taste and odor intensity and global appreciation. The results found on the cheese supplemented with the optimum content of CEO showed antioxidant activity (IC50 = 0.146) was relatively important compared to conventional cheese (IC50 = 0.477). In fact, the incorporation of CEO in cheese may strongly improve its oxidative stability. Cheese antioxidant activity was not affected during the storage period for 13 days. Results showed also that the fresh double cream cheese could be stored at refrigerated temperature with good taste and odor during the period of 13 days due to antimicrobial properties given by CEO, that suggest lengthening its shelf life.

Covalent triazine frameworks(CTFs)have been recently employed for visible light-driven photocatalysis due to their unique optical and electronic ***,the usually highly hydrophobic nature of CTFs,which originates from their overall aromatic backbone,leads to limitations of CTFs for applications in aqueous *** this study,we aim to extend the range of the application media of CTFs and design hybrid material of a CTF and mesoporous silica(SBA-15)for efficient photocatalysis in aqueous medium.A thiophene-containing CTF was directly synthesized in mesopores of *** to the high surface area and the added hydrophilic properties by silica,the hybrid material demonstrated excellent adsorption of organic molecules in *** leads not only to high photocatalytic performance of the hybrid material for the degradation of organic dyes in water,but also for efficient photocatalysis in solvent-free and solid ***,the reusability,stability and easy recovery of the hybrid material offers promising metal-free heterogeneous photocatalyst for broader applications in different reaction media.

Linking changes in the soil microbial community to C and N dynamics during crop residue decomposition

Crop residues are among the main inputs that allow the organic carbon(C)and nutrients to be maintained in agricultural *** is an important management strategy that can improve soil fertility and enhance agricultural *** work aims to evaluate the extent of the changes that may occur in the soil heterotrophic microbial communities involved in organic matter decomposition and C and nitrogen(N)mineralization after the addition of crop *** microcosm experiments were performed at 28℃ for 90 days with the addition of three crop residues with contrasting biochemical qualities:pea(Pisum sativum L.),rapeseed(Brassica napus L.),and wheat(Triticum aestivum L.).Enzyme activities,C and N mineralization,and bacterial and fungal biomasses were monitored,along with the bacterial and fungal community composition,by the highthroughput sequencing of 16 S rRNA and ITS *** addition of crop residues caused decreases in β-glucosidase and arylamidase activities and simultaneous enhancement of the C mineralization and net N immobilization,which were linked to changes in the soil microbial *** addition of crop residues decreased the bacterial and fungal biomasses 90 days after treatment and there were shifts in bacterial and fungal diversity at the phyla,order,and genera *** specific orders and genera were dependent on crop residue *** example,Chloroflexales,Inquilinus,Rubricoccus,Clitocybe,and Verticillium were identified in soils with pea residues;whereas Thermoanaerobacterales,Thermacetogenum,and Hypoxylon were enriched in soils with rapeseed residues,and Halanaerobiales,Rubrobacter,and Volutella were only present in soils with wheat *** findings of this study suggest that soil C and N dynamics in the presence of the crop residues were driven by the selection of specific bacterial and fungal decomposers linked to the biochemical qualities of the crop *** crop residue decomposition processes showed specific bacteria

Erythema Nodosum Manifestation Post COVID-19 Vaccine: A Case Report

Erythema nodosum (EN) is a delayed hypersensitivity response that may be triggered by a range of conditions, including infections and vaccines. Rare cases of EN caused by COVID-19 were recently reported but none due to COVID-19 vaccines were documented. We report here a case of EN occurring after COVID-19 vaccination. Patient presented with painful nodular lesions of all 4 limbs, evolving for one month. These lesions appeared 48 h after the second dose of COVID-19 vaccination. The patient reported no recent infectious episodes. The physical examination found numerous, erythematous dermohypodermatitis knots with no palpable adenopathy. Some were regressive according to biligenesis shades. Biology and radiology findings eliminated other common causes of this dermatosis. The skin biopsy was done and suggested EN. The final diagnosis was post COVID-19 vaccine EN. Patient received a symptomatic treatment and had a slight improvement of the lesions 10 days after diagnosis. Physicians should be aware of the side effects of the vaccine including skin manifestations, especially since more people are bound to be vaccinated.

Synchronous carcinoma of head and neck: 2 cases report

Multiple primary cancers are becoming an increasingly frequent situation and are often the source of many diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties. We report the case of two patients diagnosed with head and neck synchronous carcinomas. The first case is a 33-yearold man with a history of a keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of the eye lid and who was operated 4 mo later from a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of thesubmandibular salivary gland. The second case is a 71-year-old woman who underwent a total parotidectomy for a mucoepidermod carcinoma of the left parotid gland and who consulted 2 mo later for epistaxis. The explorations concluded to a squamous cell carcinoma of the nasopharynx. The patient had a complementary radiotherapy. No local neither distant recurrence of the two tumors has been detected after a follow-up of 36 mo in the first case and 24 mo in the second one.

Complicated sinusitis in children:18 cases report

AIM: To precise the clinical characteristics of rhinosinusitis in pediatric population, their complications and therapeutic ***: All infants younger than 15 years adm-itted to the Ear, Nose and Throat Department of the Military Hospital of Tunis, Tunisia for a complicated rhinosinusitis between 2006 and 2013 were evaluated. Data related to patients and the disease were collected and analyzed: past medical history, complaints, clinical examination, radiologic findings, therapeutic management and evolution. RESULTS: Eighteen cases were identified with a mean age of 5.1 years(5 mo to 13 years)(SD ± 3.1). A male preponderance was noted in 72% of the cases. Rhinorrhea and fever were the most common presenting symptoms. Radiological explorations(computed tomography-scan ± magnetic resonance imaging) have been practiced for all of our patients. Orbital involvement was found in 77% of the cases associated with meningitis in 2 cases. Antibiotherapy was prescribed to all our patients. Surgical procedures were performed in 8 cases: endoscopic sinus surgery and/or external drainage of orbital abscess. After an average follow-up period of 2.5 years, 3 of our patients were lost. The ophthalmic sequelae noted in 3 cases(16%) were permanent and caused important functional and social problems. A favourable outcome has been noted in the rest of our patients. CONCLUSION: Rhinosinusitis can be extremely severe in children requiring urgent radiological imaging and aggressive treatment to avoid orbital and intracranial complications.

Infrathyroidian hydatid cyst: Diagnostic difficulties and therapeutic management, a case report

Hydatidosis is a cosmopolitan anthropozoonose common to humans and many mammals. The cervical localization is rare even in endemic countries. We report a case of cervical hydatidosis located in the infra-thyroidian region. The diagnosis was suspected on clinical and radiological examinations(Ultrasonography, computed tomography-scan). The surgical removal of the cyst was difficult because of the inflammatory tissue around the mass. The confirmation of the diagnosis was obtained by the histopathological examination. During the followup, a local recurrence of the disease was diagnosed after 9 mo treated successfully by surgery.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: Long term follow-up of 83 patients

AIM: To analyzes the clinical, paraclinical, therapeutical and evolutive features of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC).METHODS: All the patients treated for a nasopharyngeal carcinoma between 2000 and 2013 in the Ear-NoseThroat Department of the Military Hospital of Tunis, Tunisia were collected in this study. Eighty-three patients signed a written consent prior to study enrollment. The gender ratio(M/W) was 6.5 with a median age of 49 years(range 16-85). The median follow up time was 37 mo(18 to 108 mo). The evolution, during and after the end of therapy, was assessed on clinical biological and radiological exams. Different parameters were analyzed and compared to other series: complications of chemo and radiotherapy, recurrence of the disease, metastasis and overall survival ***: Of the 83 patients of our study, 15% had T1 tumors, 20% had T2, 23% had T3 and 41% had T4 disease. At the time of diagnosis, 14% of the patients had a cranial nerve deficit. Only 12 patients had exclusive radiotherapy and the remaining of our patients had concomitant radio chemotherapy. Iatrogenic complications were diagnosed in 53% of the cases: radioepithelitis(28%), radiodermatitis(9%), xerostomia(17%), osteoradionecrosis(3%), cerebral radionecrosis(1%) and a pancytopenia(17%). The follow-up period varied from 18 to 108 mo(average: 37 mo). During the first six months after treatment, a persistence of the disease was found in 11% of patients, while a recurrence of the cancer was diagnosed in 6% and distant metastasis developed in 14% of the patients. Fifteen patients needed remedial chemotherapy for a relapse or metastasis and five had palliative chemotherapy for very advanced cases. We report 3 cases of death during the follow-up. CONCLUSION: Despite its excellent radio-chemotherapy response, and general good prognosis, a careful follow-up of patients with NPC is necessary to detect and manage any iatrogenic complication, locoregional recurrence or metastasis of the disease.
