So there I sat, looking at this rice, with a brownish-red liquid splashed over it in the name of a sauce, and worst of all, the spongy chunks donot look or taste like any meat I have ever tasted. I jumped up with rage to complain to the fuwuyuan （waitress） that this was definitely not what I ordered. Well, the jumping up part I did, the complaint part, however, never happened. I stood at the counter mouth agape, like a fish that had just been pulled out of a perfectly wonderful lake. All languages that I have ever spoken in my life flashed through my head like neon signs, hut no Chinese phrases came to me that day.

Background: World over, there has being an improvement in birth spacing resulting in a reduction in the perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality rates. Objective: To appraise the factors influencing inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) among pregnant women receiving antenatal care at Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done among antenatal attendee, with at least one previous delivery, in Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki over a six month period using a structured questionnaire. Data obtained was analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 20. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 28.6 (95% CI 28.1 - 29.1) years. The majority (231, 70%) were multiparous. Most respondent (162, 49.1%) had their last delivery 6 - 12 months prior to conception. The significant determinants of IPI include: maternal age, marital status, place of residence, social class, baby’s sex, family income, use of contraceptive, parity and outcome of her last confinement. Contraceptive knowledge is high (300, 90.9%);more than 50% had the desire to use some form of contraceptive but majority (132, 40%) said they will never use contraceptive after delivery. Conclusions: Majority of the women had an IPI of 6 - 12 months. The major determinant of this includes having a live birth in last delivery, parity, marital status, and place of residence. The attitude to contraception is poor;effort needs to be directed into identifying the immediate and remote causes of this as this will help in proper education and counselling needed to increase contraceptive uptake.

Background:Stimulation of the immune system against disease and restoration of immune functions in immun-odeficiency disease state are essential for maintaining good ***:This study investigated the immunomodulatory effects of the leaf extract and fractions of Musanga cecropioides in immunocompetent and immunocompromised animal ***:Humoral immune stimulatory effect of the extract and its fractions at 200 mg·kg^(−1) and 400 mg·kg^(−1) against sheep red blood cells(SRBCs)antigen was determined in both immunocompetent and cyclophosphamide(80 mg·kg^(−1))induced immunosuppressed *** effect of the most active fraction on leucopoiesis was also determined following high dose cyclophosphamide(300 mg·kg^(−1))suppression of the immune *** at 2.5 mg·kg^(−1) was used as the reference drug throughout the ***:The extract dose dependently stimulated the humoral immune response to SRBC antigen in immuno-competent animals;however,its stimulatory effect was not significant(P>0.05).In the immunosuppressed model,the extract at 400 mg·kg^(−1) evoked significant(Ptrated by the EAF as shown by steep time recovery curve in high dose immunosuppressed *** EAF at 200 mg·kg^(−1) and 400 mg·kg^(−1) showed above 50%leucopoiesis just like the reference drug(2.5 mg·kg^(−1) levamisole),against 33.83%of leucopoiesis shown by the immune-suppressed control ***:*** boosted immune stimulation in immunocompetent animals and brought about fast rate of restoration of immune status in immunocompromised animals.

AIM: To investigate the reduction in hepatitis B virus(HBV) covalently closed-circular DNA(ccc DNA) with entecavir(ETV) or lamivudine(LAM). METHODS: This analysis included patients who had participated in the randomized Phase Ⅲ study ETV-022 comparing ETV vs LAM in nucleos(t)ide-naive, HBe Agpositive patients. Patients received ETV(0.5 mg daily) or LAM(100 mg daily) for a minimum of 52 wk. Patients were eligible to participate in this sub-study if they had paired biopsies at baseline and week 48 with evaluable measurements for hepatic HBV ccc DNA and total hepatic HBV DNA. The main objective was to compare changes in hepatic HBV ccc DNA and total hepatic HBV DNA at week 48 of ETV or LAM treatment, which was a secondary endpoint of study ETV-022. Additional post hoc analyses included linear regression analyses to assess associations of baseline levels and on-treatment changes of ccc DNA with other baseline factors [sex,age, serum HBV DNA, alanine aminotransferase(ALT), Knodell necroinflammatory score, Ishak fibrosis score, total hepatic HBV DNA, and HBV genotype], or ontreatment factors(changes from baseline at week 48 in serum HBV DNA, ALT, Knodell necroinflammatory score, Ishak fibrosis score, total hepatic HBV DNA, and HBe Ag loss at week 48).RESULTS: Overall, 305 patients(ETV = 159; LAM = 146) of ETV-022 had paired baseline and week 48 liver biopsies with evaluable measurements for hepatic HBV ccc DNA and total hepatic HBV DNA, and were included in this analysis. Baseline demographics and disease characteristics were comparable between the two arms. After 48 wk, ETV resulted in significantly greater reductions in hepatic HBV ccc DNA [-0.9 log10 copies/human genome equivalent(HGEq) vs-0.7 log10 copies/HGEq; P = 0.0033] and total hepatic DNA levels(-2.1 log10 copies/HGEq vs-1.6 log10 copies/HGEq; P < 0.0001) than LAM.
