Comparison of hig.-resolution ultrasound and MR-enterog.aphy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM:To compare the results of hig.-resolution ultrasound(HR-US) and mag.etic resonance enterog.aphy(MRE) examinations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS:The reports of 250 consecutive cases with known IBD,who had an MRE and HR-US examination,were retrospectively *** a patient-based approach we evaluated morpholog.cal disease features such as affected bowel wall,stenosis,abscess and *** comparison between the two modalities was based on the hypothesis,that any patholog.cal chang. described in any imag.ng.modality was a true finding.as no further standard of reference was available for complete ***:Two hundred and fifty examinations representing.207 different patients were *** modalities assessed similar bowel wall chang.s in 65% of the examinations,with more US finding. in 11% and more MRE finding. in 15%.When the reports were analyzed with reg.rd to "bowel wall inflammation",US reported more finding. in 2%,while MRE reported more finding. in 53%.Stenoses were assessed to be identical in 8%,while US found more in 3% and MRE in 29%(P g. in 2%(n = 4) while MRE detected more in 6%(n = 16).US detected more fistulas in 1%(n = 2),while MRE detected more in 13%(n = 32)(P g. by US was a difficult to assess anatomical reg.on(lesser pelvis,n = 72).CONCLUSION:US can miss clinically relevant patholog.cal chang.s in patients with IBD mostly due to difficulty in assessing.certain anatomical reg.ons.

AIM: To compare venous thromboembolism(VTE) in hospitalized ulcerative colitis(UC) patients who respond to medical manag.ment to patients requiring.colectomy. METHODS: Population-based surveillance from 1997 to 2009 was used to identify all adults admitted to hospital for a flare of UC and those patients who underwent colectomy. All medical charts were reviewed to confirm the diag.osis and extract clinically relevant information. UC patients were stratified by:(1) responsive to inpatient medical therapy(n = 382);(2) medically refractory requiring.emerg.nt colectomy(n = 309); and(3) elective colectomy(n = 329). The primary outcome was the development of VTE during.hospitalization or within 6 mo of discharg.. Heparin prophylaxis to prevent VTE was assessed. Log.stic reg.ession analysis determined the effect of disease course(i.e., responsive to medical therapy, medically refractory, and elective colectomy) on VTE after adjusting.for confounders including.ag., sex, smoking. disease activity, comorbidities, extent of disease, and IBD medications(i.e., corticosteroids, mesalamine, azathioprine, and infliximab). Point estimates were presented as odds ratios(OR) with 95%***: The prevalence of VTE among.patients with UC who responded to medical therapy was 1.3% and only 16% of these patients received heparinprophylaxis. In contrast, VTE was hig.er among.patients who underwent an emerg.nt(8.7%) and elective(4.9%) colectomy, despite g.eater than 90% of patients receiving.postoperative heparin prophylaxis. The most common site of VTE was intra-abdominal(45.8%) followed by lower extremity(19.6%). VTE was diag.osed after discharg. from hospital in 16.7% of cases. Elective(adjusted OR = 3.69; 95%CI: 1.30-10.44) and emerg.nt colectomy(adjusted OR = 5.28; 95%CI: 1.93-14.45) were sig.ificant risk factors for VTE as compared to medically responsive UC patients. The g.ne expression of adenosine receptors in the processes of contrast induced nephropathy in mouse kidney

Objective: Contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) is the third leading.cause of hospital acquired renal failure. The mechanism of CIN is not fully understood. The objectives of this study were to investig.te the expression chang.s of the four subtypes of adenosine receptors (A1AR, A2AAR, A2BAR, and A3AR) following.administration of contrast media in mice. Methods: C57BL/6J mice were randomized into treatment and control g.oups. Iodixanol (IDX) was administered to two treatment g.oups throug. retroorbital injection at two different dosag.s, 0.75 g./kg.and 2.75 g./kg. Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was g.ven to the control g.oup. Mice kidneys were harvested at day 3 and day 7 after Iodixanol administration. Kidney injuries and function were evaluated according.to Hematoxylin and eosin stain, Ki67 protein expression, and TUNEL assay of paraffin embedded kidney sections, and plasma creatinine assay. RNA and protein were extracted from the kidney specimens. A1AR, A2AAR, A2BAR, and A3AR RNA and protein level of the samples were assessed using.qRT-PCR and Western blotting. with g.PDH as an endog.nous control. Results: H&E staining.showed no sig.ificant histopatholog. injuries after Iodixanol administration. No evidence of kidney injury and functional impairment was found. However, there was an increased number of A1AR, A2AAR, A2BAR, and A3AR RNA transcripts detected in the kidney 3 days after Iodixanol injection. The RNA levels in all the four subtypes of adenosine receptors were increased 2-3 fold in the day 3 specimens and back to normal at day 7. Western blot demonstrated that A1AR, A2AAR, and A3AR expression increased 1.5 to 2 fold at day 3 and day 7 following.Iodixanol injection. A2BAR baseline expression was low in normal physiolog.cal conditions and no sig.ificant chang. was detected by Western blot. Conclusions: Iodixanol sig.ificantly increases adenosine receptors g.ne expression in mice. This sug.ests that adenosine receptors may play a role in the development of CI

Objectives of this study were to investig.te the effects of milk replacer (MR) acidification for free- access feeding.on pre- and post-weaning.performance, morbidity and mortality of calves. Calves were randomly assig.ed to free-access feeding.of acidified (ACID, n = 31) or non-acidified (NON, n = 31) MR, and weaned at 42 days. ACIDMR was prepared to pH 4.0 - 4.5 using.formic acid. Intakes were measured daily and weig.ts weekly. Samples of ACID and NON MR were analyzed for coliform and aerobic bacterial g.owth. After weaning. calves transitioned to a g.ain-fed veal diet, weig.ed every 2 weeks. At slaug.ter (approximately 6 months of ag.), lung. were evaluated for g.oss patholog.cal chang.s and dressed carcass weig.ts were obtained. g.neralized linear mixed models were constructed to examine the effects of MR acidification. Differences by treatment g.oup for pre- and post-weaning.morbidity and mortality were tested using.Pearson’s χ2 and Fisher’s exact tests. ACID calves consumed less MR than NON (10.6 vs. 11.7 L/d, P = 0.02). Acidification tended to promote earlier onset of starter ration consumption (32.0 vs. 39.5 d, hazard ratio = 1.5, P = 0.07), but did not affect averag. daily starter ration or water intakes across the pre-weaning.period. ACID and NON calves did not differ for BW at weaning. pre- or post-weaning.ADg.or dressed carcass weig.t. ACID MR had less coliform (P g.owth (P g.post-mortem inspection than NON calves (OR = 0.3, P = 0.07). These results indicate that under free-access feeding.conditions, acidification limited bacterial g.owth and MR intake, but there were no long.term impacts of acidification on calf performance or health. In conclusion, acidification to pH 4.0 - 4.5 will sig.ificantly reduce bacterial g.owth in milk fed to calves.

Preventive effect of Peperomia pellucida(L.) Kunth herbs on ovariectomyinduced osteoporotic rats

Osteoporosis is a metabolic skeletal disorder leading.to bone fracture which adversely impacts the quality of life. In the present, we aimed to investig.te the effect of Peperomia pellucida(L.) Kunth herb juice and ethanolic extract on ovariectomy(OVX)-induced osteoporotic rat model. Osteoporosis was induced by OVX with a double dorsolateral approach on female Wistar rats. Female Wistar rats underg.ing.sham surg.ries(sham-control g.oup) served as controls. The ovariectomized rats were divided into six g.oups based on administered treatments,(i) CMC Na 0.3%(OVX-control g.oup),(ii) standard drug.ethynil estradiol 4.5 μg.kg.,(iii) P. pellucida juice at dose of 50 mg.kg. and(iv) 100 mg.kg.(v) P. pellucida ethanolic extract at dose of 50 mg.kg. and(vi) 100 mg.kg. Treatments were started 1 week after the surg.ries and lasted for 6 weeks. Rats treated with 100 mg.kg.P. pellucida ethanol extract had sig.ificantly decreased serum ALP level and reduced excretion of urine calcium compared with the OVX-control g.oup(Pg.ificantly altered when compared with the sham-control g.oup(Pg.kg.ethanolic extract-treated g.oup showed improvement on three-dimensional imag. of the trabecular bone compared with the OVX-control g.oup. Trabecular cavity formation in 100 mg.kg.ethanolic extract-treated g.oup was minimal. Ethanolic extract of Peperomia pellucida(L.) Kunth herbs at a dose of 100 mg.kg.had preventive effect on OVX-induced osteoporotic rats.

Quantitative Variation in Water-Use Efficiency across Water Reg.mes and Its Relationship with Circadian, Veg.tative, Reproductive, and Leaf g.s-Exchang. Traits

Droug.t limits lig.t harvesting. resulting.in lower plant g.owth and reproduction. One trait important for plant droug.t response is water-use efficiency （WUE）. We investig.ted （1） how the joint g.netic architecture of WUE, reproductive characters, and veg.tative traits chang.d across droug.t and well-watered conditions, （2） whether traits with distinct developmental bases （e.g. leaf g.s exchang. versus reproduction） differed in the environmental sensitivity of their g.netic architecture, and （3） whether quantitative variation in circadian period was related to droug.t response in Brassica rapa. Overall, WUE increased in droug.t, primarily because stomatal conductance, and thus water loss, declined more than carbon fixation. g.notypes with the hig.est WUE in droug.t expressed the lowest WUE in well-watered conditions, and had the larg.st veg.tative and floral org.ns in both treatments. Thus, larg. chang.s in WUE enabled some g.notypes to approach veg.tative and reproductive trait optima across environments. The g.netic architecture differed for g.s-exchang. and veg.tative traits across droug.t and well-watered conditions, but not for floral traits. Correlations between circadian and leaf g.s-exchang. traits were sig.ificant but did not vary across treatments, indicating.that circadian period affects physiolog.cal function reg.rdless of water availability. These results sug.est that WUE is important for droug.t tolerance in Brassica rapa and that artificial selection for increased WUE in droug.t will not result in maladaptive expression of other traits that are correlated with WUE.

Induced Hall-Like Current by Acoustic Phonons in Semiconductor Fluorinated Carbon Nanotube

We show that Hall-like current can be induced by acoustic phonons in a nondeg.nerate, semiconductor fluorine-doped sing.e-walled carbon nanotube (FSWCNT) using.a tractable analytical approach in the hypersound reg.me ?(q is the modulus of the acoustic wavevector and is the electron mean free path). We observed a strong.dependence of the Hall-like current on the mag.etic field, H, the acoustic wave frequency, , the temperature, T, the overlapping.integ.al, , and the acoustic wavenumber, q. Qualitatively, the Hall-like current exists even if the relaxation time does not depend on the carrier energ. but has a strong.spatial dispersion, and g.ves different results compared to that obtained in bulk semiconductors. For and , the Hall-like current is in the absence of an electric field and in the presence of an electric field at 300 K. Similarly, the surface electric field due to the Hall-like current is in the absence of an external electric field. In the presence of an external electric field, and for at 300 K. q and can be used to tune the Hall-like current and of the FSWCNT. This offers the potential for room temperature application as an acoustic switch or transistor, as well as a material for ultrasound current source density imag.ng.(UCSDI) and AE hydrophone device in biomedical eng.neering.

Unique interstitial miRNA sig.ature drives fibrosis in a murine model of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease

AIM To delineate chang.s in miRNA expression localized to the peri-cystic local microenvironment(PLM) in an ortholog.us mouse model of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease(ADPKD)(mcwPkd1^(nl/nl)).METHODS We profiled miRNA expression in the whole kidney and laser captured microdissection(LCM) samples from PLM in mcwPkd1^(nl/nl)kidneys with Qiag.n miScript 384 HC miRNA PCR arrays. The three times points used are:(1) post-natal(PN) day 21, before the development of trichrome-positive areas;(2) PN28, the earliest sig. of trichrome staining. and(3) PN42 following.the development of prog.essive fibrosis. PN21 served as appropriate controls and as the reference time point for comparison of miRNA expression *** LCM samples revealed three temporally upreg.lated miRNAs [2 to 2.75-fold at PN28 and 2.5 to 4-fold(P ≤ 0.05) at PN42] and four temporally downreg.lated miRNAs [2 to 2.75 fold at PN28 and 2.75 to 5-fold(P ≤ 0.05) at PN42]. Expression of twenty-six miRNAs showed no chang. until PN42 [six decreased(2.25 to 3.5-fold)(P ≤ 0.05) and 20 increased(2 to 4-fold)(P ≤ 0.05)]. Many critical miRNA chang.s seen in the LCM samples from PLM were not seen in the contralateral whole *** Precise sampling.with LCM identifies miRNA chang.s that occur with the initiation and prog.ession of renal interstitial fibrosis(RIF). Identification of the targ.t proteins reg.lated by these miRNAs will provide new insig.t into the process of fibrosis and identify unique therapeutic targ.ts to prevent or slow the development and prog.ession of RIF in ADPKD.
