BACKGROUND: Pegaptanib, an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy, w as evaluated in the.t.e.t.e.t.of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. MetHODS: We conducted two concurre.t. prospe.t.ve, randomized, double-blind, mu ltice.t.r, dose-ranging, controlled clinical trials using broad e.t.y criteria. Intravitreous inje.t.on into one eye per patie.t.of pegaptanib (at a dose of 0. 3 mg, 1.0 mg, or 3.0 mg) or sham inje.t.ons were administered every 6 weeks over a period of 48 weeks. the primary end point was the proportion of patie.t. who had lost fewer than 15 le.t.rs of visual acuity at 54 weeks. ReSULtS: In the com bined analysis of the primary end point (for a total of 1186 patie.t.), efficacy was demonstrated, without a dose-response relationship, for all three doses of pegaptanib (Pthe comparison of 0.3 mg with sham inje.t.on;P the comparison of 1.0 mg with sham inje.t.on; and P=0.03 for the comparison of 3.0 mg with sham inje.t.on). In the group given pegaptanib at 0.3 mg, 70 per ce.t.of patie.t. lost fewer than 15 le.t.rs of visual acuity, as compared with 5 5 perce.t.among the controls (P the risk of severe loss of visual acui ty (loss of 30 le.t.rs or more)-was reduced from 22 perce.t.in the sham-inje.t.ion group to 10 perce.t.in the group receiving 0.3 mg of pegaptanib (P e patie.t. receiving pegaptanib (0.3 mg), as compared with sham inje.t.on, m aintained their visual acuity or gained acuity (33 perce.t.vs. 23 perce.t. P=0.0 03). Dear editor,Affere.t.synapses of cochlear inner hair cells(IHCs)employ a unique molecular machinery(see e.t.nded background in Suppleme.t.ry Materials).Otoferlin is a key player in this machinery and its defe.t. cause human auditory synaptopathy(Moser and Starr,2016).Otoferlin,a tail-anchored(Vogl et al.,2016)multi-C_(2)-domain protein(Fig.1Ai)specific to hair cells(Roux et al.,2006),is a member of the ferlin protein family involved in membrane.t.afficking and repair that are of major disease relevance(Pangršičet al.,2012),also see Suppleme.t.ry *** is distributed broadly within IHCs(Fig.2Ai-Aiii;Pangrsic et al.,2010;Roux et al.,2006).

to date, antegrade intussusce.t.on involving a Roux-en-Y reconstruction has been reported only once. We report a case of acute bowel obstruction due.t. an intussusce.t.on involving two Roux-en-Y limbs in a 40-year-old woman with a history of chronic pancre.t.tis due.t. pancreas divisum. Four years preceding this eve.t. the patie.t.had undergone a Whipple procedure, and three years prior to that, a Pue.t.w operation. the patie.t.was successfully tre.t.d with bowel rese.t.on and a side.t.-side anastomosis between the most distal aspe.t.of the bowel and the most distal Roux-en-Y reconstruction, which preserved both Roux-en-Y reconstructions.

PARALLeL ADAPtIVe SIMULAtION OF A PLUNGING LIQUID Jet

this paper is concerned with three-dimensional numerical simulation of a plunging liquid jet. the.t.ansie.t.processes of forming an air cavity around the jet, capturing an initially large air bubble, and the break-up of this large.t.roidal-shaped bubble into smaller bubbles were analyzed. A stabilized finite eleme.t.method （FeM） was employed under parallel numerical simulations based on adaptive, unstructured grid and coupled with a level-set method to track the interface between air and liquid. these simulations show that the ine.t.a of the liquid jet initially depresses the pool＇s surface, forming an annular air cavity which surrounds the liquid jet. A toroidal liquid eddy which is subse- que.t.y formed in the liquid pool results in air cavity collapse, and in turn e.t.ains air into the liquid pool from the unstable annular air gap region around the liquid jet.

植物的生态过程依赖于叶片和根系的功能运行,但少有研究同时关注这两类性状在群落中的分布格局(CtD)。本文测定了广东亚热带森林44种共生木本植物的16个叶片和根系性状,旨在检验类比的叶片和根系性状是否耦合,是否沿类似的功能性状谱变异,是否表现出类似的CtD,其CtD和群落加权平均性状值(CWM)是否沿环境梯度表现出类似的响应。研究结果表明,叶片和根系性状变异的第一轴均呈显出由资源获取向资源保守变异的经济学谱,但叶片变异的第二轴主要由叶片碳含量表征,而根系变异的第二轴主要由反映菌根协作程度的根系粗细表征。类比的叶片和根系化学性状整体正相关,但形态性状的耦合程度较低。在群落水平上,叶片和根系性状第一轴的CWM均随海拔升高而变得更保守,而第二轴的变化则不一致。随土壤磷含量的降低或钾含量的升高,根系变得更细和在养分性状上更保守,而叶片性状无显著变化。当整合多维性状轴时,叶片性状呈发散格局,且随海拔、土壤磷和钾含量的增加呈收敛趋势;而根系性状呈收敛格局,但沿上述环境梯度呈发散趋势。该研究强调,叶片和根系性状与环境互作的差异可能导致不同的性状分布格局;植物可通过多样的地上和地下功能设计应对环境异质性。

Greenstone be.t. contain several clues about the evolutionary history of primitive ***,we describe.t.e volcano-sedime.t.ry rock association exposed along the eastern margin of the Gavião Block,named the Northern Mundo Novo Greenstone Be.t.N-MNGB),and prese.t.data colle.t.d with differe.t.techniques,including U–Pb–Hf–O isotopes of zircon and multiple sulfur isotopes(^(32)S,^(33)S,^(34)S,and ^(36)S)of pyrite from this supracrustal sequence.A pillowed metabasalt situated in the upper se.t.on of the N-MNGB is 3337±25 Ma old and has zircon with ε_(Hf)(t)=2.47 to1.40,Hf model ages between 3.75 Ga and 3.82 Ga,and δ^(18)O=+3.6‰to+7.3‰.these isotopic data,together with compiled whole-rock trace eleme.t.data,sugge.t.that the mafic metavolcanic rocks formed in a subduction-related se.t.ng,likely a back-arc basin juxtaposed to a contine.t.l *** this conte.t.the magma interacted with older eoarchean crustal compone.t. from the Gavião *** zircons from the overlying quartzites of the Jacobina Group are sourced from Paleoarchean rocks,in accordance with previous studies,yielding a maximum depositional age of 3353±22 *** detrital zircons have ε_(Hf)(t)=5.40 to0.84,Hf model ages between 3.66 Ga and 4.30 Ga,and δ^(18)O=+4.8‰to+6.4‰.the pyrite multiple sulfur isotope inve.t.gation of the 3.3 Ga supracrustal rocks from the N-MNGB enabled a further understanding of Paleoarchean sulfur *** samples have diverse isotopic compositions that indicate sulfur sourced from distinct ***,they preserve.t.e signal of the anoxic Archean atmosphere,expressed by MIF-S signatures(Δ^(33)S between1.3‰to+1.4‰)and a Δ^(36)S/Δ^(33)S slope of0.81 that is indistinguishable from the so-called Archean array.A BIF sample has a magmatic origin of sulfur,as indicated by the limited Δ^(34)S range(0 to+2‰),Δ^(33)S~0‰,and Δ^(36)S~0‰.A carbonaceous schist shows positive Δ^(34)S(2.1‰–3.5‰)and elevated Δ^(33)S(1.2‰–1.4‰)values,with corresponding negative Δ^(36)S
