Clonal Transgenerational Effects Transmit for Multiple Generations in a Floating Plant

Environmental conditions of a parent plant can influence the performance of their clonal offspring,and such clonal transgenerational effects may help offspring adapt to different ***,it is still unclear how many vegetative generations clonal transgenerational effects can transmit for and whether it depends on the environmental conditions of the *** grew the ancestor ramets of the floating clonal plant Spirodela polyrhiza under a high and a low nutrient level and obtained the so-called 1^(st)-generation offspring ramets of two types(from these two environments).Then we grew the 1^(st)-generation offspring ramets of each type under the high and the low nutrient level and obtained the so-called 2^(nd)-generation offspring ramets of four *** repeated this procedure for another five times and analyzed clonal transgenerational effects on growth,morphology and biomass allocation of the 1^(st)-to the 6^(th)-generation offspring *** found positive,negative or neutral(no)transgenerational effects of the ancestor nutrient condition on the offspring of ***,depending on the number of vegetative generations,the nutrient condition of the offspring environment and the traits *** observed significant clonal transgenerational effects on the 6^(th)-generation offspring;such effects occurred for all three types of traits(growth,morphology and allocation),but varied depending on the nutrient condition of the offspring environment and the traits *** results suggest that clonal transgenerational effects can transmit for multiple vegetative generations and such impacts can vary depending on the environmental conditions of offspring.

Comparison of Stretta procedure and toupet fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease-related extra-esophageal symptoms

AIM: To compare the outcomes between the Stretta procedure and laparoscopic toupet fundoplication(LTF) in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)-related extra-esophageal ***: From January 2011 to February 2012, a total of 98 patients diagnosed with GERD-related extra-esophageal symptoms who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. All patients who either underwent the Stretta procedure or LTF treatment have now completed the 3-year follow-up. Primary outcome measures, including frequency and severity of extra-esophageal symptoms, proton pump inhibitor(PPI) use, satisfaction, and postoperative complications, were assessed. The results of the Stretta procedure and LTF therapy were analyzed and ***: There were 47 patients in the Stretta group and 51 patients in the LTF group. Ninety patients were available at the 3-year follow-up. The total of the frequency and severity scores for every symptom improved in both groups(P 0.05). However, the score for globus hysterics was different between the Stretta group and the LTF group(4.9 ± 2.24 vs 3.2 ± 2.63, P < 0.05). After the Stretta procedure and LTF treatment, 29 and 33 patients in each group achieved PPI therapy independence(61.7% vs 64.7%, P = 0.835). The patients in the LTF group were more satisfied with their quality of life than those in the Stretta procedure group(P < 0.05). Most complications resolved without intervention within two weeks; however, two patients in the LTF group still suffered from severe dysphagia 2 wk after the operation, and it improved after bougie dilation treatment in both ***: The Stretta procedure and LTF were both safe and effective for the control of GERD-related extra-esophageal symptoms and the reduction of PPI use.

Combined modeling of cell aggregation and adhesion mediated by receptor–ligand interactions under shear flow

Blood cell aggregation and adhesion to endothelial cells under shear flow are crucial to many biological processes such as thrombi formation, inflammatory cascade, and tumor metastasis, in which these cellular interactions are mainly mediated by the underlying receptor-ligand bindings. While theoretical modeling of aggregation dynamics and adhesion kinetics of interacting cells have been well studied separately, how to couple these two processes remains unclear. Here we develop a combined model that couples cellular aggregation dynamics and adhesion kinetics under shear flow. The impacts of shear rate （or shear stress） and molecular binding affinity were elucidated. This study provides a unified model where the action of a fluid flow drives cell aggregation and adhesion under the modulations of the mechanical shear flow and receptor-ligand interaction kinetics. It offers an insight into understanding the relevant biological processes and functions.

Synthesis and Immunosuppressive Activity of New Amino Alcohols Derivatives(II)

A series of new amino alcohols derivatives was synthesized with 6-bromo-2-tetralone as starting material, 6-substituted-2-tetralone as intermediate and Ullmann reaction, Suzuki reaction and spiro-hydantoin hydrolysis as key steps. The structures of key intermediate and target compounds were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR and MS. Bioactivity researches show that the target compounds have certain inhibition effects on mice peripheral blood lymphocytes.

Effects of Aeration on Root Physiology and Nitrogen Metabolism in Rice

In order to clarify the effects of aeration on root nitrogen metabolism in rice seedlings,rice cultivars Guodao 6 （indica） and Xiushui 09 （japonica） were investigated for root growth,the activities of glutamine synthetase （GS）,glutamic acid-pyruvic acid transaminase （GPT） and glutamic acid oxaloacetate transaminase （GOT）,the nitrate （NO 3-N） concertration,the contents of free amino acids and soluble sugar in root under hydroponics with continuous aeration *** results showed that rice seedlings grown in oxygenation solutions had higher root dry matter,longer root length,stronger root activity and larger root absorption area compared with the *** addition,the contents of soluble sugar,root vigor and the activities of GS,GOT and GPT in the aeration solutions were higher than those in the *** results also indicated that the activities of enzymes involved in root nitrogen metabolism of Xiushui 09 were enhanced by aeration,however,there was no significant influence on root nitrogen metabolism of Guodao 6,which suggested that effect of oxygenation on rice root nitrogen metabolism might be genotype-specific.

Four-dimensional (4D) printing is an emerging and highly innovative additive manufacturing process by which to fabricate pre-designed,self-assembly structures with the ability to transform over ***,one of the critical challenges of 4D printing is the lack of advanced 4D printing systems that not only meet all the essential requirements of shape change but also possess smart,dynamic capabilities to spatiotemporally and instantly control the shape-transformation ***,we present a facile 4D printing platform which incorporates nanomaterials into the conventional stimuli-responsive polymer,allowing the 4D printed object to achieve a dynamic and remote controlled,on-time and position shape transformation.A proof-of-concept 4D printed brain model was created using near-infrared light (NIR) responsive nanocomposite to evaluate the capacity for controllable 4D transformation,and the feasibility of photothermal stimulation for modulating neural stem cell *** novel 4D printing strategy can not only be used to create dynamic 3D patterned biological structures that can spatiotemporally control their shapes or behaviors of transformation under a human benign stimulus (NIR),but can also provide a potential method for building complex self-morphing objects for widespread applications.

Recent changes in the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection among children and adults in high- or low-incidence regions of gastric cancer in China

Background The prevalence of Helicobacterpylori （H. pylon） infection varies by geographic locations. Studies indicate that the infection rate of H. pylori was previously high in China but that rates had been declining worldwide over recent decades. The aims of our study were：（1） to determine the current prevalence of H. pylori infection among children and adults residing in areas with high （Muping County, Shandong） and low （Yanqing County, Beijing） incidences of gastric cancer in China, and （2） to compare the prevalence for 2006 with the prevalence for the early 1990s. Methods Using Warthin-Starry silver staining of gastric mucosal biopsy specimens and H. pylori stool antigen tests （HpSA）, we tested a total of 2065 asymptomatic children aged 8-15 years and adults aged 40-79 years in the above two regions from May to July 2006. We evaluated 520 children and 526 adults from Muping, and 516 children and 503 adults from Yanqing. Subjects were selected randomly and H. pylori status was determined by HpSA in children and either HpSA or histology of gastric biopsies in adults. Data obtained in the early 1990s in the same two areas of China were also collected and studied. Results For children, the prevalence of H. pylori infection was significantly higher in Muping （37.69%） than it was in Yanqing （25.58%, P〈0.001）. In both regions, the prevalence of H. pyloriincreased with age but was not related to gender A significant difference was observed between 8-9-years old and 10-11-years old （P 〈0.05）, but not between other adjoining age groups （P 〉0.05）. From 1991 to 2006 H. pylori prevalence among 8-10-year-old children decreased in Muping （60.00% vs 32.07%, P 〈0.001）, but not Yanqing （24.06% vs 19.10%, P 〉0.05）. In the adult group, H. pylori prevalence was 50.95% in Muping, which was significantly higher than the 41.35% positive rate in Yanqing （P 〈0.01）. Neutrophil extracellular traps(NETs)have been considered a significant unfavorable factor for wound healing in diabetes,but the mechanisms remain *** therapeutic application of small extracellular vesicles(sEVs)derived from mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)has received considerable attention for their *** preconditioning is reported to enhance the therapeutic potential of MSC-derived sEVs in regenerative ***,the aim of this study is to illustrate the detailed mechanism of NETs in impairment of diabetic wound healing and develop a promising NET-targeting treatment based on hypoxic pretreated MSC-derived sEVs(Hypo-sEVs).Excessive NETs were found in diabetic wounds and in high glucose(HG)-induced *** research showed that high concentration of NETs impaired the function of fibroblasts through activating endoplasmic reticulum(ER)***-sEVs efficiently promoted diabetic wound healing and reduced the excessive NET formation by transferring *** analysis and RNA interference experiment revealed that miR-17-5p in Hypo-sEVs obstructed the NET formation by targeting TLR4/ROS/MAPK ***,miR-17-5p overexpression decreased NET formation and overcame NET-induced impairment in fibroblasts,similar to the effects of ***,we identify a previously unrecognized NET-related mechanism in diabetic wounds and provide a promising NET-targeting strategy for wound treatment.
