Volatiles induced by the larvae of the Asian corn borer （Ostrinia furnacalis） in maize plants affect behavior of conspecific larvae and female adults

Effects of maize （Zea mays L.） volatiles induced by larvae of the Asian corn borer, Ostriniafurnacalis （Guenee）, on the orientation behaviors of Asian corn borer larvae and oviposition of the females were investigated. Nineteen volatile chemicals, with terpenes being the major components, were identified from maize plants attacked by third instar Asian corn borer larvae. Coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection （GC-EAD） analyses revealed some electroantennographic differences between female and male Asian corn borer antennae in response to larvae-induced maize volatiles; female responded to （E）-2-hexenal, nonanal, （Z）-3-hexen-l-ol and three unknown compounds while the male only responded to （E）-2-hexenal, nonanal and one unknown compound. In laboratory orientation bioassays, Asian corn borer neonate larvae were attracted to extracts collected from Asian corn borer-damaged plants as well as to synthetic farnesene, but were repelled by （Z）-3-hexen- 1 -ol. In laboratory oviposition bioassays, gravid females laid fewer eggs on plants damaged by larvae than on mechanically damaged plants or undamaged plants. Adult Asian corn borer females deposited fewer eggs on wax paper treated with （E）-2-hexenal or （Z）-3-hexen-l-ol than on wax paper treated with hexane （control）. The results suggest that Asian corn borer can affect the behaviors of conspecific larvae and adults by changing host plant volatiles.

Stylet penetration behaviors of the cotton aphid Aphis gossypfi on transgenic Bt cotton

Stylet penetration behaviors of cotton aphids Aphis gossypii Glover on a transgenic cotton line ＂GK-12＂ expressing Bt toxic protein of Cry 1A （Bt cotton） and a non- Bt conventional cotton line ＂Simian-3＂（CK cotton） were recorded with the direct current electrical penetration graph （DC-EPG） technique. Cotton aphids reared on Bt cotton （abbreviated as Bt-aphids） and its parental non-Bt control line （CK-aphids） for more than 20 generations each, were used for recordings on two cotton lines. Among 47 selected parameters reflecting the activities of aphid stylets within plant tissues, there were eight parameters of CK-aphids showing significant differences between the performances of CK- aphids on Bt cotton and CK cotton, while for Bt-aphids, all the parameters were statistically equal between the performances on the two cotton lines. All parameters with significant differences indicated that CK-aphids could penetrate into Bt cotton more easily, but the phloem saps of Bt cotton were not as good as those of regular cotton for CK-aphids. Based on the present results, we concluded that there were some factors in Bt cotton affecting penetration behaviors of CK-aphids, but it just took several generations for CK-aphids to completely adapt Bt cotton, and Bt-aphids could feed on two cotton lines without difficulty.

Impacts of transgenic Bt cotton on the stylet penetration behaviors of Bemisia tabaci biotype B Evidence from laboratory experiments

Stylet penetration behaviors of Bemisia tabaci biotype B on two transgenic cotton lines ＂GK12＂ and ＂GK19＂ expressing Bt toxic protein CrylA （Bt cotton） and a non-Bt conventional cotton line ＂Simian-3＂（CK cotton） were recorded with the direct current electrical penetration graph （DC-EPG） technique. Our results suggested that EPG waveform patterns, types and characteristics [non-probe （NP）, pathway （C）, potential drops （pd） and phloem phase （E（pd））] ofBemisia tabaci biotype B were very similar on the three cotton lines. There were no obvious differences of pathway variables among whiteflies on the three cotton lines. Some phloem variables related to E（pd）l differed. Duration of 1st E（pd）l and mean duration of E（pd）l on both GK12 and GK19 were significantly shorter than that on CK cotton （P 〈 0.05）. Fewer whiteflies on GK have long E（pd）l. Other phloem variables including total duration of E（pd） summed, mean E（pd） duration and percentage of whiteflies reaching the phloem phase were similar among the three cotton lines.

Subcellular mitochondria serve as sensors for energy metabolism and redox balance, and the dynamic regulation of functional and dysfunctional mitochondria plays a crucial role in determining cells' fate. Selective removal of dysfunctional mitochondria at the subcellular level can provide chondrocytes with energy to prevent degeneration, thereby treating osteoarthritis. Herein, to achieve an ideal subcellular therapy, cartilage affinity peptide (WYRGRL)-decorated liposomes loaded with mitophagy activator (urolithin A) were integrated into hyaluronic acid methacrylate hydrogel microspheres through microfluidic technology, named HM@WY-Lip/UA, that could efficiently target chondrocytes and selectively remove subcellular dysfunctional mitochondria. As a result, this system demonstrated an advantage in mitochondria function restoration, reactive oxygen species scavenging, cell survival rescue, and chondrocyte homeostasis maintenance through increasing mitophagy. In a rat post-traumatic osteoarthritis model, the intra-articular injection of HM@WY-Lip/UA ameliorated cartilage matrix degradation, osteophyte formation, and subchondral bone sclerosis at 8 weeks. Overall, this study indicated that HM@WY-Lip/UA provided a protective effect on cartilage degeneration in an efficacious and clinically relevant manner, and a mitochondrial-oriented strategy has great potential in the subcellular therapy of osteoarthritis.

Segregation of Mg-6Gd alloy under natural convection:From macro solute distribution to micro dendrite growth

Segregation is a serious defect in alloy ingots which severely deteriorates materials *** segregation defect in Mg-6Gd alloy is studied by coupling macro thermal-solutal-convection transport and micro dendrite *** macroscopic fluid dynamics and mass transfer equations are resolved to forecast the segregation behavior under conditions of continuous temperature variation during the solidification *** numerical model is validated by testing double-diffusive natural convection in a closed square cavity.A phase field model is then applied to simulate the micro dendrite growth,using macro undercooling and liquid flow velocity as boundary *** show that the multiscale segregation behavior,including macro solute distribution and micro dendritic morphology,is strongly dependent on the temperature condition and the liquid convection,which provides guidance for reducing and eliminating the segregation defect.

It is difficult to achieve selective separation and enrichment of different rare earths from high abundance yttrium ores efficiently only dependent on their discrepancy in thermodynamic *** present work suggests a new strategy based on non-equilibrium kinetic separation of Er and Tm on the surface of freely rising oil droplets to control the separation order of *** is revealed that the mutual separation of Er/Tm is significantly promoted with the separation coefficient of 2.89 during the non-equilibrium extraction with the addition of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid(DTPA).The extraction sequence of Tm,Er and Y can be controlled as Tm>Y>Er,thus Y can be selectively enriched during the process of separation of Er and Tm,Such a sequence is subject to the controllable dissociation rates of RE(Ⅲ)-DTPA complexes and extraction abilities of P507 with the three RE(Ⅲ)*** dissociation rate is dependent on the stabilities of RE(Ⅲ)-DTPA complexes and follows the sequence ofY(Ⅲ)—DTPA Er>Y to Tm>Y>Er.

This study proposes an effective method to enhance the accuracy of the Differential Quadrature Method(DQM)for calculating the dynamic characteristics of functionally graded beams by improving the form of discrete node ***,based on the first-order shear deformation theory,the governing equation of free vibration of a functionally graded beam is transformed into the eigenvalue problem of ordinary differential equations with respect to beam axial displacement,transverse displacement,and cross-sectional rotation angle by considering the effects of shear deformation and rotational inertia of the beam ***,ignoring the shear deformation of the beam section and only considering the effect of the rotational inertia of the section,the governing equation of the beam is transformed into the eigenvalue problem of ordinary differential equations with respect to beam transverse *** on the differential quadrature method theory,the eigenvalue problem of ordinary differential equations is transformed into the eigenvalue problem of standard generalized algebraic ***,the first several natural frequencies of the beam can be *** feasibility and accuracy of the improved DQM are verified using the finite element method(FEM)and combined with the results of relevant literature.

Material and structure made by additive manufacturing(AM)have received much attention lately due to their flexibility and ability to customize complex *** study first implements multiple objective topology optimization simulations based on a projectile perforation model,and a new topologic projectile is *** two types of 316L stainless steel projectiles(the solid and the topology)are printed in a selective laser melt(SLM)machine to evaluate the penetration performance of the projectiles by the ballistic *** experiment results show that the dimensionless specific kinetic energy value of topologic projectiles is higher than that of solid projectiles,indicating the better penetration ability of the topologic ***,microscopic studies(scanning electron microscope and X-ray micro-CT)are performed on the remaining projectiles to investigate the failure mechanism of the internal structure of the topologic *** explicit dynamics simulation was also performed,and the failure locations of the residual topologic projectiles were in good agreement with the experimental results,which can better guide the design of new projectiles combining AM and topology optimization in the future.

Dear Editor,This letter concerns the parameter tuning problem for nonlinear satellite buffer networks with communication delays, aiming to optimize their stability properties under L_(1)-gain. We first model the satellite buffer networks by a nonlinear time-delay positive system and propose a novel characterization under which the nonlinear system is asymptotically stable with a prescribed L_(1)-induced performance.
