Altitudinal variation in life-history features of a Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau lizard

Environmental changes along an altitudinal gradient can facilitate the differentiation of life-history features in ectothermic species,but little attention has been devoted to the reciprocal influence of altitude and alpine slope directionality on life-history variation.According to life-history theory,increased environmental stress causes a change in reproductive allocation from number to quality of offspring,as well as a stronger trade-off between size and number of offspring.To clarify the influence of environmental pressures on the life-history features of the Qinghai toad-headed lizard Phrynocephalus vlangalii along an altitudinal cline,we surveyed late pregnant females from 3 populations of low(2,600 m),middle(3,400 m),and high(3,600 m)elevations in the Dangjin Mountain of Gansu,China from July to October 2019,and compared their inter-population differences in maternal body size,reproductive characteristics,offspring growth,and locomotor performance.Because of lower temperatures,higher humidity,and lower light intensity caused by slope aspect and altitude,the middle-altitude region experienced stronger environmental stress than the high-and low-altitude regions.Our results showed that females were larger at middle-and high-altitude sites and smaller at the low-altitude site,following Bergmann’s rule.We also found that females from low-altitude population gave birth earlier than those from the middle and high altitudes.Our results showed a shift in the offspring size-number trade-off of P.vlangalii in response to colder and harsher environments,with lizards from the alpine steppe(i.***.the middle-and high-altitude habitats)producing fewer but larger offspring than those from the warm steppe(i.***.the low-altitude habitat).Low-altitude juveniles grew faster than high-altitude ones,but at the same rates as middle-altitude juveniles.This result demonstrates that the growth of P.vlangalii was associated with temperature and light intensity.Our findings contribute to enhancing our understanding of the altitudinal var

Thermal transport properties of low-dimensional nanomaterials are highly anisotropic and sensitive to the structural disorder,which can greatly limit their applications in heat dissipation.In this work,we unveil that the carbon honeycomb structures which have high in-plane thermal conductivity simultaneously possess high axial thermal conductivity.Based on non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations,we find that the intrinsic axial thermal conductivity of carbon honeycomb structure reaches 746 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1)at room temperature,comparable to that of good heat dissipation materials such as hexagonal boron nitride.By comparing the phonon transmission spectrum between carbon honeycombs and few layer graphene,the physical mechanism responsible for the high axial thermal conductivity of carbon honeycombs is discussed.More importantly,our simulation results further demonstrate that the high axial thermal conductivity of carbon honeycomb structure is robust to the structural disorder,which is a common issue during the mass production of the carbon honeycomb structure.Our study suggests that the carbon honeycomb structure has unique advantages to serve as the thermal management material for practical applications.

Farnesoid X receptor(FXR)is widely accepted as a promising target for various liver diseases;however,panels of ligands in drug development show limited clinical benefits,without a clear mechanism.Here,we reveal that acetylation initiates and orchestrates FXR nucleocytoplasmic shuttling and then enhances degradation by the cytosolic E3 ligase CHIP under conditions of liver injury,which represents the major culprit that limits the clinical benefits of FXR agonists against liver diseases.Upon inflammatory and apoptotic stimulation,enhanced FXR acetylation at K217,closed to the nuclear location signal,blocks its recognition by importin KPNA3,thereby preventing its nuclear import.Concomitantly,reduced phosphorylation at T442 within the nuclear export signals promotes its recognition by exportin CRM1,and thereby facilitating FXR export to the cytosol.Acetylation governs nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of FXR,resulting in enhanced cytosolic retention of FXR that is amenable to degradation by CHIP.SIRT1 activators reduce FXR acetylation and prevent its cytosolic degradation.More importantly,SIRT1 activators synergize with FXR agonists in combating acute and chronic liver injuries.In conclusion,these findings innovate a promising strategy to develop therapeutics against liver diseases by combining SIRT1 activators and FXR agonists.

The aggregation of inorganic particles with high mass ratio will form a heterogeneous electric field in the solid polymer electrolytes(SPEs),which is difficult to be compatible with lithium anode,leading to inadequate ionic conductivity.Herein,a facile spray drying method is adopted to increase the mass ratio of inorganic particles and solve the aggregation problems of fillers simultaneously.The polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide(LiTFSI)covers the surface of each Li_(6.4)La_(3)Zr_(1.4)Ta_(0.6)O_(12)(LLZTO)granules during the nebulization process,then forming flat solid electrolytes via layer-by-layer deposition.Characterized by the atomic force microscope,the obtained solid electrolytes achieve a homogenous dispersion of Young’s modulus and surface electric field.As a result,the as-prepared SPEs present high tensile strength of 7.1 MPa,high ionic conductivity of 1.86×10^(−4)S·cm^(−1)at room temperature,and wide electrochemical window up to 5.0 V,demonstrating increased mechanical strength and uniform lithium-ion migration channels for SPEs.Thanks to the as-prepared SPEs,the lithiumsymmetrical cells show a highly stable Li plating/stripping cycling for over 1,000 h at 0.1 mA·cm^(−2).The corresponding Li/LCoO_(2)batteries also present good rate capability and excellent cyclic performance with capacity retention of 80%after 100 cycles at room temperature.

A novel parameter estimation algorithm based on Compressed sensing(CS) for the Direct sequences spread spectrum(DSSS) signals in high dynamic environments is proposed. In this algorithm, Fractional Fourier transform(Fr FT) is first employed to estimate Doppler frequency rate, followed by the quadric phase term compensation. The compensation results are divided into several segments with equal length and coherent integration is carried out within each segment respectively. A convex optimization algorithm is applied to estimate the velocity and initial range of the target simultaneously based on the sparsity of target in the code phase domain. The proposed algorithm is capable of overcoming the limitation of Doppler frequency ambiguity and obtaining the accurate parameter estimates without correcting the code phase drift. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.

To understand the adaptive strategies of the overwintering adults of Steno- catantops splendens, the mechanism of maintenance and termination of the reproductive diapause, the variation in mortality between overwintering females and males, and the mating strategy of the males were investigated. The results indicated that the adult repro- ductive diapause in natural conditions was mainly regulated by photoperiod in the fall - long photoperiods promoted reproductive development and short photoperiods maintained reproductive diapause, and the sensitivity of the overwintering adults to photoperiod was over before the end of the winter. When transferred from natural conditions to controlled laboratory conditions on dates from September through February, pre-oviposition became increasingly shorter with increasingly deferred transfer dates regardless of photoperiod conditions. The adults treated with low temperature for 30 days in September through November had significantly shorter pre-oviposition, suggesting that low temperatures in winter had an important role in the termination of reproductive diapause. The female had a significantly lower supercooling point than the male, which was related to their lower mortality after winter. In addition, observations of wild populations of the species indicated that mating behavior prior to winter and the duration of pre-mating period were not affected by photoperiod; mating and sperm transfer were mostly completed by November. Compared with females only mating before winter, females mating in the spring had shorter life span, longer pre-oviposition, lower hatching rate and laid fewer egg pods while showing no significant difference with regard to ovipositional interval, per pod number of eggs and nymph dry weight.

Layered double hydroxide(LDH)with special layered structure has been proved to have excellent hole transport capacity and good stability.Herein,we report a high efficient composite photocatalyst of CoAlLDH and BiPO4prepared by hydrothermal and che mical adsorption(denoted as CoAl-LDH/BiPO_(4)).Phenol can be entirely degraded by 1%CoAl-LDH/BiPO_(4)under 30 min ultraviolet(UV)light irradiation,and the degradation rate constants k are 3 times and 39 times higher than that of pure BiPO_(4)and CoAl-LDH,respectively.The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be attributed to effective holes transfer from BiPO4to CoAl-LDH,which hinders the recombination of photo genera ted charge carriers.In addition,the combination of BiPO4and CoAl-LDH avoids the agglomeration of BiPO4and improves the stability of BiPO_(4).Active species capture experiments indicate that superoxide radicals(·O-_(2))are the main active species responsible for the degradation of phenol.This work provides technical approaches and research ideas for solving the photogenerated charge carrier recombination problem of photocatalyst.
