Niche differentiation among facultative filter feeders: Insights from invasive Ponto-Caspian mysids

The degree of dietary specialization has a fundamental impact on the ecological function and interactions of suspension *** niche differentiation by food particle size is common among obligate suspension feeders,its role is not evident in facultative *** this study,we aimed at providing new insights on the matter by focusing on sympatric mysid *** mysids use different mechanisms for raptorial and filter-feeding,they represent a more adequate model system than for example,the more extensively studied *** made morpholog-ical measurements on the 4 coexisting invasive Ponto-Caspian mysid species to determine the areas and mesh sizes of their *** also quantified their clearance rates on the microalga Cryptomonas *** a laboratory experiment to reveal how morphological differences manifest in their overall filtering *** found relatively small but consistent differences in the primary filter area among the species,indicating that morphological constraints due to the enclosed position of the setae might limit the possibility for *** primary filter mesh sizes were small in all 4 species(0.69-2.73μm)with moderate but consistent intraspecific differences,suggesting that the benefit of being able to capture small particles might outweigh the pressure for *** observed clearance rates were in accordance with the morphological characteristics of the species,highlighting that auxiliary filters(present in one of the species,Limnomysis benedeni)are needed to increase filtering capacity *** study confirmed that food particle size can contribute to the niche differentiation of facultative filter feeders,but also indicated that they can tolerate a higher overlap than obligate *** observed differences were related to the habitat preferences and predatory potentials of the species,suggesting that complementarity among the different niche axes might further facilitate theircoexistence.

Methionine(Met) is an essential and first limiting amino acid in the poultry diet that plays a significant role in chicken embryonic development and growth. The present study examined the effect of in ovo injection of DL-Met and L-Met sources and genotypes on chicken embryonic-intestinal development and health. fertilized eggs of the two genotypes, TETRA-SL layer hybrid(TSL)—commercial layer hybrid and Hungarian Partridge colored hen breed(HPC)—a native genotype, were randomly distributed into four treatments for each genotype. The treatment groups include the following: 1) control non-injected eggs(NoIn); 2) saline-injected(SaIn); 3) DL-Met injected(DLM); and 4) L-Met injected(LM). The in ovo injection was carried out on 17.5 d of embryonic development; after hatching, eight chicks per group were sacrificed, and the jejunum was extracted for analysis. The results showed that both DLM and LM groups had enhanced intestinal development as evidenced by increased villus width, villus height, and villus area(P ficantly reduced crypt depth, glutathione(GSH) content, glutathione S-transferase 3 alpha(GST3), occludin(OCLN) gene expression and increased villus height to crypt depth ratio in the TSL genotype than the LM group(P factor 1(IGf1) gene, tricellulin(MD2), occludin(OCLN),superoxide dismutase 1(SOD1), and GST3 genes than the TSL genotype(P findings showed that in ovo injection of Met enhanced intestinal development, and function, with genotypes responding differently under normal conditions. Genotypes also influenced the expression of intestinal antioxidants, tight junction, and growth-related genes.

Peeling off the surface: Pt-decoration of WSe 2 nanoflakes results in exceptional photoelectrochemical HER activity

Photoelectrochemical(PEC)hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)was studied on exfoliated,pristine and Pt-decorated tungsten diselenide(p-WSe_(2))nanoflake samples,using a previously developed microdroplet PEC microscopy *** WSe 2 nanoflakes had well-defined thicknesses as measured by atomic force microscopy,and the Pt nanoparticles(NPs)were deposited by a variable num-ber of atomic layer deposition(ALD)*** exceptionally high photocurrent density of 49.6 mA cm^(−2)(under 220 mW cm^(−2) irradiation)and internal-photon-to-electron-conversion efficiency(∼90%at 550 nm)were demonstrated on these Pt-decorated WSe_(2)(WSe_(2)-Pt)*** Pt NP loading and thickness of WSe_(2) nanoflakes(in the 24–235 nm range)were used to fine-tune their PEC activity for *** found similar charge transfer and surface recombination kinetics of pristine and WSe_(2)-Pt specimens(as assessed by intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy),which indicated significant differences in their bulk properties.X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies were performed to identify defect states and quantify the density of states around the valence band of WSe_(2).The elevated temperature of the ALD process and the evolving Pt NP phase conspired to passivate the sub-surface(i.e.,bulk)defects in the WSe_(2) nanoflakes,resulting in their vastly improved PEC performance.

Sorghum[Sorghum bicolor(L.)Moench]can benefit from accelerated breeding and release of improved varieties through doubled haploid *** technology has been used in speeding up the breeding of other major cereals such as wheat,maize and rice,for which generally widely applied optimised protocols exist.A reproducible protocol for the crop,that can overcome genotype dependency and other species-specific challenges such as phenolic exudation is however *** study aimed at sorghum doubled haploids production thereby contributing to the development of an improved *** the 28 hybrid genotypes,both f1 registered-and experimental hybrids involved,this study successfully produced haploids from five genotypes and subsequently,four confirmed doubled-haploid lines on W14mf medium or its modification with 1.0 gl^(-1)L-proline,1.0 gl^(-1)L-asparagine and 1.0 gl^(-1)KH_(2)PO_(4).Medium 190-2Cu was used for regeneration and rooting,which occurred successfully,if the calli were transferred on to it less than 7 days after induction,and temperature was maintained at 25°C under light *** dependency was not wholly overcome;however,sorghum’s high tillering ability and abiotic stress tolerance were observed to contribute to attainment of haploid *** diploids producing seeds at rates of upto 80.5%were obtained,therefore eliminating the need for colchicine duplication.

Efficient in vivo delivery of anti-inflammatory proteins to modulate the microenvironment of an injured spinal cord and promote neuroprotection and functional recovery is a great ***-modified messenger RNA(mRNA)has become a promising new modality that can be utilized for the safe and efficient delivery of therapeutic ***,we used lipid nanoparticle(LNP)-encapsulated human interleukin-10(hIL-10)-encoding nucleoside-modified mRNA to induce neuroprotection and functional recovery following rat spinal cord contusion *** administration of hIL-10 mRNA-LNP to rats led to a remarkable reduction of the microglia/macrophage reaction in the injured spinal segment and induced significant functional recovery compared to ***,hIL-10 mRNA treatment induced increased expression in tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 and ciliary neurotrophic factor levels in the affected spinal segment indicating a time-delayed secondary effect of IL-105 d after *** results suggest that treatment with nucleoside-modified mRNAs encoding neuroprotective factors is an effective strategy for spinal cord injury repair.

Cuckoo parasitism on two closely-related Acrocephalus warblers in distant areas:a case of parallel coevolution?

Common Cuckoos(Cuculus canorus) parasitize nests of small passerines.e Cuckoo chicks cause the death of their nest-mates when evicting eggs or nestlings from the nests;consequently,hosts su er from a high loss of *** adaptations against parasitism,e.g.,by egg discrimination behavior,and cuckoo counter-adaptations to hosts,e.g.,by mimetic eggs,are often regarded as a result of the arms race between the two interacting *** Hungary Great Reed Warblers(Acrocephalus arundinaceus) are the main hosts of cuckoos,su ering from heavy parasitism(ca.40-65%).e Oriental Reed Warbler(***),formerly a subspecies of the Great Reed Warbler(***),is also a highly parasitized host in Japan(25-40%).We compared main characteristics of Cuckoo parasitism in these two distant areas from the Western and Eastern Palearctic by comparing cuckoo egg *** measured color characteristics of host and parasitic eggs by *** modeling revealed lower chromatic distances between Cuckoo and host eggs in Hungary than in Japan,but high variation both in host and Cuckoo eggs may cause matching problems in ***(brightness) di erence between host and Cuckoo eggs were lower in Japan than in Hungary,and it proved to be the most important factor a ecting egg *** rejected Cuckoo eggs at similar frequencies(37% and 35% in Hungary and Japan,respectively).Host adaptation,i.e.,egg rejection behavior,seems to be preceding Cuckoo counter-adaptations to hosts in *** suggest that the Cuckoo-Great/Oriental Reed Warbler relationships developed in alternative ways in Japan and Hungary,and they represent di erent stages of their arms race.

Evolution of disease phenotype in adult and pediatric onset Crohn's disease in a population-based cohort

AIM:To investigate the evolution of disease phenotypein adult and pediatric onset Crohn's disease(CD) populations,diagnosed between 1977 and ***:Data of 506 incident CD patients were analyzed(age at diagnosis:28.5 years,interquartile range:22-38 years).Both in-and outpatient records were collected prospectively with a complete clinical follow-up and comprehensively reviewed in the population-based Veszprem province database,which included incident patients diagnosed between January 1,1977 and December 31,2008 in adult and pediatric onset CD *** phenotype according to the Montreal classification and long-term disease course was analysed according to the age at onset in time-dependent univariate and multivariate ***:Among this population-based cohort,seventy-four(12.8%) pediatric-onset CD patients were identified(diagnosed ≤ 17 years of age).There was no significant difference in the distribution of disease behavior between pediatric(B1:62%,B2:15%,B3:23%) and adult-onset CD patients(B1:56%,B2:21%,B3:23%) at diagnosis,or during ***,the probability of developing complicated disease behaviour was 49.7% and 61.3% in the pediatric and 55.1% and 62.4% in the adult onset patients after 5-and 10-years of ***,time to change in disease behaviour from non stricturing,non penetrating(B1) to complicated,stricturing or penetrating(B2/B3) disease was not significantly different between pediatric and adult onset CD in a Kaplan-Meier *** year of diagnosis(P = 0.04),ileal location(P for steroids(P f,or progression to,complicated disease behavior at diagnosis and during follow-up.A change in disease location was observed in 8.9% of patients and it was associated with smoking status(P = 0.01),but not with age at ***:Long-term evolution of disease behavior was not different in pediatric-a

AIM:To analyze the difference in disease course and need for surgery in patients with Crohn’s disease(CD).METHODS:Data of 506 patients with incident CD were analyzed(age at diagnosis:31.5±13.8 years).Both hospital and outpatient records were collected prospectively with a complete clinical follow-up and comprehensively reviewed in the population-based Veszprem province database,which includes incident CD patients diagnosed between January 1,1977 and December 31,***-up data were collected until December 31,*** patients included had at least 1year of follow-up *** with indeterminate colitis at diagnosis were excluded from the ***:Overall,73 patients(14.4%)required resective surgery within 1 year of *** exposure and need for biological therapy were lower in patients with early limited surgery(Pfollow-up in patients with and without early surgery differed significantly after matching on propensity scores(Pfor reoperation was also lower in patients with early limited resective surgery(P=0.038,HR=0.42)in a Kaplan-Meier and multivariate Cox regression(P=0.04)***,this advantage was not observed after matching on propensity scores(PLogrank=0.656,PBreslow=0.498).CONCLUSION:Long-term surgery rates and overall exposure to steroids and biological agents were lower in patients with early limited resective surgery,but reoperation rates did not differ.
