Enhancement of the benthic communities around an isolated island in the Antarctic Ocean

Insular marine biotas are often richer in faunal diversity than those from the open sea in the same geo- graphical region. The existence of particular island effects were tested under polar conditions by compar- ing infaunal benthic assemblages on Peter I Island with those of similar latitudes in the open ocean at the Bellingshausen Sea and also from the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Sampling was carried out aboard the R/V Hesperides during the expedition named BEnTART-2003 from 24 January to 3 March 2003. Benthic samples were collected at 18 stations ranging from 90 to 2 044 m depth, using an USnEL-type box corer （BC） dredge. Representatives of 32 higher taxa of invertebrates were found. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed various patterns in the data. First, significant differences in polychaete abundance were detected between the stations located in the open sea and the remaining sites （island plus mainland sites）. Bivalve abundances were also distinct between island and mainland sampling sites. Sediment columns taken from the island seafloor exhibited the highest rate of bioturbation by the infauna. These findings confirm the model that islands develop distinct assemblages characterized by the enhancement of the benthic commu- nities even in cold waters. Several abiotic factors were measured simultaneously at the seafloor and along the water column to investigate faunal distribution patterns. Significant correlations were found between the benthic assemblages and a combination of two environmental variables：＂island effect＂（measured as a categorical variable） and the redox state of sediments. Richer and more complex benthic assemblages were found in Peter I Island＇s sea bottom, whereas the more depauperate bottoms remained in the open sea.

Parosteal osteosarcoma (POS) is the most common form of surface osteosarcoma. Its symptoms are insidious and its duration prior to diagnosis is considerably longer than that of other types of osteosarcoma. We report a case of POS with a growing mass but no evidence of metastasis. This tumor, which was diagnosed as calcified hematoma with benign characteristics, was incompletely resected in our hospital 21 years before the diagnosis of recurrence. The patient underwent a wide en bloc resection in our hospital and was free of symptoms, with no signs of tumor recurrence or metastasis during a 53-month follow-up.

Local renin angiotensin system and sperm DnA fragmentation

The renin angiotensin system(RAS)appears to influence male fertility at multiple *** this work,we analyzed the relationship between the RAS and DnA *** male volunteers were divided into two groups(25 each):control(DnA fragmentation≤20%)and pathological(DnA fragmentation>20%)*** of five peptidases controlling RAS were measured fluorometrically:prolyl endopeptidase(which converts angiotensin[A]I and A II to A 1–7),neutral endopeptidase(nEP/CD10:A I to A 1–7),aminopeptidase n(APn/CD13:A III to A IV),aminopeptidase A(A II to A III)and aminopeptidase B(A III to A IV).Angiotensin-converting enzyme(A I to A II),APn/CD13 and nEP/CD10 were also assessed by semiquantitative cytometry and quantitative flow cytometry assays,as were the receptors of all RAS components:A II receptor type 1(AT1R),A II receptor type 2(AT2R),A IV receptor(AT4R or insulin-regulated aminopeptidase[IRAP]),(pro)renin receptor(PRR)and A 1–7 receptor or Mas receptor(MasR)none of the enzymes that regulate levels of RAS components,except for APn/CD13(decrease in fragmented cells),showed significant differences between both *** of RAS receptors revealed no significant differences in immunolabeling patterns between normozoospermic and fragmented *** of AT1R(94.3%normozoospermic vs 84.1%fragmented),AT4R(96.2%vs 95.3%)and MasR(97.4%vs 87.2%)was similar between the ***2R(87.4%normozoospermic vs 63.1%fragmented)and PRR(96.4%vs 48.2%)were higher in non-fragmented *** findings suggest that fragmented DnA spermatozoa have a lower capacity to respond to bioactive RAS peptides.

SVM-Algorithm for Supervision, Monitoring and Detection Vibration in Wind Turbines

With the implementation of supervised machine learning techniques, wind turbine maintenance has been transformed. A wind turbine’s electrical and mechanical components can be automatically identified, monitored, and detected to predict, detect, and anticipate their degeneration using this method of automatic and autonomous learning. Two different failure states are simulated due to bearing vibrations and compared with machine learning classifier and frequency analysis. A wind turbine can be monitored, monitored, and faulted efficiently by implementing SVM. With these technologies, downtime can be reduced, breakdowns can be anticipated, and aspects can be imported if they are offshore.

A Possible Hypoallergenic Cereal in Wheat Food Allergy and Baker’s Asthma

Background: Wheat is a potent allergen source and is one of the causes of baker’s asthma and food allergy. The best strategy for managing food hypersensitivity involves strict avoidance of the trigger. However, wheat is quite difficult to avoid. Several alternative strategies for the treatment of food allergy are under study. Spelt is a possible hypoallergenic crop that may be tried in patients with wheat allergy. Methods: We have evaluated the allergenic IgE hypersensitivity mediated by spelt in wheat allergic patients. Overall, 66 patients who suffered from baker’s asthma or food allergy (45 males and 21 females, mean age 28.6 ± 12.9 years) were included. We have also compared its reactivity with standard- ized extracts from wheat and with purified non-specific lipid transfer proteins from wheat (Tri a 14) and from peach (Pru p 3). Immunodetection with spelt and common bread wheat extracts (Triticum aestivum, cultivar Astral) was per- formed. Fresh wheat and spelt grain extracts were used both for oral and bronchial challenge and skin tests. Specific IgE detection to different cereals was performed using the Immuno CAP System (Phadia, Uppsala, Sweden). The bronchial challenge was positive with wheat Astral in 44 (67%) patients, all of them suffered from asthma. Thirteen (29.54%) of these 44 patients had negative the challenge with spelt. The oral challenge with wheat Astral was positive in 22 (33%) patients with wheat food allergy, and the same test was positive in only in 6 of them with spelt (27.3%). The diagnostic yield (sensitivity, specificity and predictive values) of routine tests in determining spelt allergy by specific positive challenge responses was determined. Prick tests for spelt versus positive challenge tests had a good sensitivity (94%, 86.5 - 99.4;95%CI) and specificity (86%, 84 - 90;95% CI) for the diagnosis of spelt allergy. The world status and population trends of the Great Bustard (Otis tarda):2010 update

The Great Bustard(Otis tarda) world population is estimated to be 44100–57000 individuals in 2010,of which about 57–70% occur in Spain,15–25% in European Russia,4–10% in China,Mongolia and south-eastern Russia,3–4% in Portugal,3% in Hungary,1–2% in Turkey,and smaller numbers in ten other *** reliability of current censuses and estimates may be described as high for a large fraction of the world population(67–75%),and low for the remain-ing 25–33%(including Russia,Mongolia,China,Turkey,Ukraine,Iran and Kazakhstan).In spite of continued declines reported for some countries(e.g.,Turkey,Iran,China) ,the present survey suggests that total numbers have not significantly decreased worldwide during the last decade,as opposed to the globally declining trend currently *** is due to a large fraction of the world total living in countries whose overall surveys are apparently stable(e.g.,Spain,Portugal),after a noticeable recovery during the last few decades once the hunting ban was *** 6–10% of the world total is apparently still decreasing,mostly due to agricultural intensification,other causes of habitat degradation,and locally,also illegal hunting and collision with power lines.A small fraction of the world population(3–4%),is clearly(Germany,Austria) or apparently(Hungary) increasing,due to management and conservation ***,19–22% of the world total has an uncertain status,due to inaccurate current or past censuses which prevent establishing reliable population *** recommend 1)keeping conservation efforts and the species’protection status worldwide,and 2)carrying out urgently nation-wide surveys in countries with low quality estimates,in order to confirm world numbers and trends.

Relationship of sperm plasma membrane andacrosomal integrities with sperm morphometry inBos taurus

To date,sperm morphometric studies have assessed whole sperm populations without considering sperm *** aim of this study was to evaluate the relati on ship of sperm membrane and acrosomal integrity with sperm morphometry in liquid semen samples collected from *** this end,sperm morphometry was performed on cryopreserved semen samples from 16 bulls by a combination of fluorescent dyes,including Hoechst 33343,carboxyfluorescein diacetate,and propidium *** allowed discrimination of different subpopulations on the basis of sperm membrane and acrosomal integrity and analysis of the morphometries of the sperm head,nucleus,and acrosome using a specific plug-in module created on *** integrity was related to sperm morphometry as the heads of spermatozoa with a damaged acrosome were significantly smaller than those with a normal acrosome(Pn the case of spermatozoa with an intact acrosome,those with a damaged plasma membrane had a larger sperm head and acrosome than spermatozoa with an intact plasma membrane(Pno significant differences in the sperm head size were observed between sperm subpopulations without an acrosome or in the nuclear sperm morphometry of the different *** was a positive correlation between the sperm motility values of the samples and the morphometric parameters for in tact *** correlations were particularly strong for the morphometric parameters of the sperm *** conclude that there are clear differences in the sperm morphometry depending on the status of the sperm membrane and acrosome and this should be considered when performing this kind of analysis.
