Satisfaction of the Service Provider with the Organization of the Timely Cervical Cancer Detection Program

Cervical cancer is a priority health problem in Mexico. The objective of this work was to know the degree of satisfaction of the service provider with the organization of the program of Timely Detection of Cervical Cancer, specifically in taking of the cervical cytology. The study design was observational, transversal and prospective conducted from January to May 2015 in Jurisdiction 1 of the Health Services of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, in 20 health centers. Participants were 87 service providers whose function is to take cervical cytology (Pap smears). A 32-question questionnaire was applied, with Likert scale with 5 levels of response: 1 (dissatisfied), 2 (little satisfied), 3 (indifferent), 4 (satisfied) and 5 (very satisfied). The score range was 32 points (minimum job satisfaction) up to 160 points (Maximum job satisfaction). We analyzed 2 dimensions: 1) intrinsic factors that have to do with motivation and professional recognition, and 2) extrinsic factors related to infrastructure, materials, remuneration and labor policies. Each factor consisted of four categories. Descriptive statistics and linear correlation of Pearson were applied for the analysis of data. Participants signed an informed consent letter. Of 4 categories, in the intrinsic dimension, the one with the highest percentage of satisfaction was “delegation of activities” with 28.8%. In the extrinsic dimension, the category with the highest percentage of satisfaction was “infrastructure and materials” with 49.4%;while satisfaction increase in intrinsic dimensions also does in extrinsic dimensions, such correlations are significant (p < 0.05), except between delegation of activities and remuneration (r = 0.074 and p = 0.497). The higher hierarchical level, the men, the bachelor academic level and older people showed the highest level of satisfaction.

Dermatoprotective Effect of Ocoxin Cream® in Cancer Patients Treated with Radiation Therapy. Case Series

Background: The effects of radiation therapy can impact patients’ quality of life, leading to treatment interruptions and therefore sub-optimal outcomes. The main aim was to evaluate the preliminary effects of Ocoxin cream® in the prevention of radiation therapy. Methods: Fifty patients were enrolled in an observational, longitudinal, prospective, single-centre clinical trial in the Department of Radiation Therapy at the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology in Havana, Cuba. The Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) toxicity criteria were used to classify the radiation therapy, and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) instrument was used to assess quality of life. Results: Patients who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled consecutively and were treated with teletherapy using a 60Co source with 1.25 MeV energy. 70.0% of the patients were head and neck cancer patients. No grade 3 - 4 radiation therapy was reported, nor were there any interruptions in radiation treatment due to skin toxicity. Radiation therapy was observed in only 14.0% of patients, and of these, only two patients developed grade 2 toxicity. The perception of quality of life before vs. after radiation therapy remained within an average range of “no effect” (at the start of radiation therapy) to “small effect” (at the end of radiation therapy). Conclusions: This clinical study is the first report of the use of Ocoxin cream® in cancer patients and demonstrates that it is able to prevent radiation therapy and reduce the severity of toxicity of treatment with ionising radiation.

Combined Effect of Honey from Central West Brazil on Bacterial Membrane Permeability

Honey, an apicultural product with a complex chemical composition, contains numerous bioactive compounds with potential antimicrobial effects. This study investigated the effect of Apis mellifera honey from Brazil’s Central-West Region, combined with antibiotics, on bacterial membrane permeability, exploring the contributions of bioactive compounds and the botanical origin of honey. Six fresh Apis mellifera honey samples and their fractions (hexane and ethyl acetate) were analyzed, for a total of 18 samples. The bacteria Staphylococcus epidermidis, Helicobacter pylori and Enterococcus faecalis were used for antibacterial activity tests, which included minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination and synergistic effect (checkerboard) assays. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were quantified, and the botanical origin was determined based on pollen analysis. The tested honey samples significantly affected bacterial membrane permeability when combined with rifampicin and clarithromycin. Although many honey-derived bioactive compounds, when isolated, did not exhibit significant activity against these bacteria, the additive or synergistic effect of multiple compounds acting on different targets appears to potentiate the antibacterial action. Descriptive statistical analysis, including means and 95% confidence intervals, confirmed the relevance of the findings. This study has provided an important discovery: Honey has an effect on bacterial membrane permeability, although the specific mechanisms involved in this process require further investigation.

为加强中国与秘鲁两国地学合作,推广我国优势的地球化学调查与研究方法,中国地质调查局与秘鲁地质矿产冶金研究院(INGEMMET)以秘鲁中部曼塔罗(Mantaro)盆地为研究区共同开展了多目标地球化学调查,以我国现行相关行业规范为标准,采集样品并于我国实验室进行分析测试。调查和研究表明:研究区土壤总体呈弱碱性,Au元素强烈富集,I、C、C_(org)、Cd和N等指标较富集;土壤养分指标N和P较丰富,K则较缺乏,土壤养分综合等级以较丰富(二等)为主,面积占比为74.1%,土壤肥力较好;土壤环境评价指标中,Zn和Pb在少量地区存在轻微—重度污染,Cd和As则有较大面积的污染,土壤环境综合等级以轻微污染和轻度污染为主,污染地区主要分布于曼塔罗河两侧5 km范围内,重度污染区则主要分布于紧邻曼塔罗河地区和人口密度最大的万卡约市周边,重金属污染较严重,污染空间分布与曼塔罗河密切相关;土壤质量综合评价等级主要为中等—劣等,面积占比达83.18%,优质和良好级土壤面积仅占16.82%。综上所述,秘鲁曼塔罗盆地地区土壤养分较丰富,土壤重金属污染较严重,土壤综合质量为中等偏差,建议秘鲁有关部门加强对曼塔罗河及上游重金属污染源的环境管理与整治。

Atypical Presentation of Crohn’s Disease: Diagnostic Challenges in a Clinical Case

Introduction: Crohn’s Disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder with a heterogeneous presentation. While diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weight loss are hallmarks, atypical manifestations can obscure the diagnosis. This report highlights an unusual presentation of CD to emphasize the need for comprehensive diagnostic strategies. Case Report: A 25-year-old male presented with peripheral edema, anorexia, and abdominal distension but lacked classic gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Laboratory findings included microcytic anemia and hypoalbuminemia, while imaging revealed ascites and bowel wall thickening. Elevated fecal calprotectin and positive Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (ASCA) supported the diagnosis. Endoscopy confirmed ileocolic Crohn’s Disease (L3 + L4). Infliximab therapy resulted in marked clinical improvement. Discussion: This case underscores the complexity of atypical CD presentations. Early use of serological markers, imaging, and endoscopy guided the diagnosis. Recognition of CD’s diverse manifestations is critical for timely intervention. Conclusion: Atypical CD presentations require heightened clinical suspicion and a multidisciplinary approach to reduce diagnostic delays and improve patient outcomes.

Cerebrolysin Effects on Cardiac Neuropathy in Diabetic Rats

Autonomic innervation of heart is abnormal in diabetes and produces altered cardiovascular parameters. Cerebrolysin is a neurotrophic factor that improves the dendritic tree and synapses in the central nerve system after brain damage. The aim of this study was to evaluate if cerebrolysin can improve the cardiac neuropathy generated in diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats two months old were injected with streptozotocin (70 mg/Kg/, ip). Hyperglycemia and altered cardiac rate were confirmed after eight weeks of STZ injection, and cerebrolysin treatment was started in control and diabetic rats for two months (1 ml/kg/day, ip). Body weight, heart rate, heart rate variability, arterial blood pressure, and blood glucose levels were measured. Also heart weight and levels of nitrites, NGF and VEGF were measured in left ventricle homogenates. The results show that body weight was reduced and blood glucose levels were increased significantly in diabetic rats. Cerebrolysin treatment produced no significant changes in body weight either in blood glucose level in control and diabetic rats. Cerebrolysin treatment in diabetic rats shows an improvement in the altered basal cardiac rate (306 ± 6.5 lat/min) compared to diabetic saline group (272 ± 8.9 lat/min: P < 0.05), without changes in control rats. Levels of nitrites, VEGF, and NGF in the left ventricle increased in diabetic cerebrolysin treated rats. In conclusion, the results show that cerebrolysin improves some abnormalities observed in the diabetic cardiac neuropathy in rats and suggest that could be considered an additional treatment to prevent or reduce the cardiac autonomic alterations generated in diabetes.
