The aim of this paper is to develop a simple EV model and predict its energy consumption with a variable and fixed ratio gearbox over a standard driving cycle in order to understand whether this could offer significant efficiency gains. The powertrain of a generic electric vehicle was modelled in Matlab / Simulink using the QSS Toolkit. The electric vehicle was then fitted with different transmissions with different levels of complexity. Simulations were done to investigate the energy consumptions across 6 standard driving cycles. The emerging conclusions are that it is possible to improve overall energy consumption levels by around 5 to 12 % with a variable ratio gearbox depending on the driving cycle used. However, there are many other practical considerations which must be weighed.a.ainst this positive result - and the paper discusses the impact of several of these such as, gearbox efficiency, additional weight, cost and complexity, effect on drivability and potential for motor downsizing.

Functional recovery from central nervous system(CNS)trauma depends not only on axon regeneration or compensatory sprouting of uninjured fibers but also on the ability of newly grown axons to establish functional synapses with appropriate *** several studies have successfully promoted long-distance axonal regeneration in distinct CNS injury models,none of them have resulted in a viable therapeutic approach for patient recovery.A possible reason may be the lack of new synaptogenesis for reestablishing the circuitry lost after ***,we discuss how our understanding of the mechanisms that instruct synapse formation in the injured nervous system may contribute to the design of new strategies to promote functional restoration in traumatic CNS disorders.

BACKGROUNd Fluoropyrimidines are metabolized in the liver by the enzyme dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase(dPd),encoded by the dPYd *** 7%of the European population is a carrier of dPYd gene polymorphisms associated with reduced dPd enzyme *** To assess the prevalence of dPYd polymorphisms and their impact on fluoropyrimidine tolerability in Italian patients with gastrointestinal *** A total of 300 consecutive patients with a d.a.nosis of gastrointestinal malignancy and treated with a fluoropyrimidine-based regimen were included in the analysis and divided into two cohorts:(1)149 patients who started fluoropyrimidines after dPYd testing;and(2)151 patients treated without dPYd *** the patients in cohort A,15%tested only the dPYd.a.polymorphism,19%tested four polymorphisms(dPYd.a.HapB3,c.2846A>T,and dPYd13),and 66%tested five polymorphisms including *** Overall,14.8%of patients were found to be carriers of a dPYd variant,the most common being dPYd6(12.1%).Patients in cohort A reported≥G3 toxicities(P=0.00098),particularly fewer nonhematological toxicities(P=0.0028)compared with cohort B,whereas there was no statistically significant difference between the two cohorts in hematological toxicities(P=0.6944).Significantly fewer chemotherapy dose reductions(P=0.00002)were observed in cohort A compared to cohort B,whereas there was no statistically significant differences in chemotherapy *** Although this study had.a.limited sample size,it provides additional information on the prevalence of dPYd polymorphisms in the Italian population and highlights the role of pharmacogenetic testing to prevent severe toxicity.

Pollution by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons（PAHs） is widespread due to tmsuitable disposal of industrial waste. They are mostly defined.a. priority pollutants by environmental protection authorities worldwide. Phenanthrene, a typical PAH, was selected.a. the target in this paper. The PAH-degrading mixed culture, named ZM, was collected from a petroleum contaminated river bed. This culture was injected into phenanthrene solutions at different concentrations to quantify the biodegradation process. Results show near-complete removal of phenanthrene in three days of biodegradation if the initial phenanthrene concentration is low. When the initial concentration is high, the removal rate is increased but 20%-40% of the phenanthrene remains at the end of the experiment. The biomass shows a peak on the third day due to the combined effects of microbial growth and decay. Another peak is evident for cases with a high initial concentration, possibly due to production of an intermed.a.e metabolite. The pH generally decreased during biodegradation because of the production of organic acid. Two phenomenological models were designed to simulate the phenanthrene biodegradation and biomass growth. A relatively simple model that does not consider the intermed.a.e metabolite and its inhibition of phenanthrene biodegradation cannot fit the observed data. A modified Monod model that considered.a. intermed.a.e metabolite （organic acid） and its inhibiting reversal effect reasonably depicts the experimental results.

Growth room and glasshouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of constant and fluctuating tem- peratures on the development of Pasteuria penetrans a hyperparasite of root-knot nematodes. Tomato plants (Lycopersicon es- culentum Mill) were inoculated with Meloidogyne javanica second-stage juveniles attached with endospores of P. penetrans and were grown in growth room at 26?29 °C and in glasshouse at 20?32 °C. The tomato plants were sampled from the growth room after 600 degree-days based on 17 °C/d, accumulating each day above a base temperature of 10 °C and from the glasshouse after 36 calendar days. Temperature affected the development of P. penetrans directly. The rate of development at constant temperature in growth room was faster than that in the glasshouse at fluctuating temperatures.
