A Geostatistical Approach to the Seasonal Precipitation Effect on Boro Rice Production in Bangladesh

Geographical assessments on the relationship between climate variability and crop production are important for planning adaptation programs to climate change impacts on Asian rice production. This paper analyses the seasonal precipitation consequences to irrigated crop yields, in opposition to the idea that irrigated crop yields are not affected by precipitation changes. Geostatistical methods are applied to assess changes in the patterns of seasonal precipitation and corresponding changes in the Boro crop production in Bangladesh. Surfaces depicting changes in the monsoon, non-monsoon and total precipitation from 2006 to 2007, and changes in three varieties of Boro crop yield and Total Boro yield from 2006-2007 to 2007-2008 crop year are generated through Splines, Inverse Distance Weighting and Ordinary Kriging methods. Performance evaluation of these models is also performed. The relationships between the surfaces of different precipitation seasons and the surfaces of different Boro yield seasons are then assessed. The results show that there is a significant correlation between seasonal precipitation changes and Boro yield changes with notable correlation coefficients and similarity in the patterns. A significant conformity of the high precipitation zones to the high Boro yielding zones is also depicted.

Background: Spotted Fever (SF) is an acute febrile zoonosis of variable severity that typically occurs in an endemic manner with worldwide distribution. Considering that SF is a disease of significant public health importance, this study aims to identify the mortality profile due to SF in Brazil from 2018 to 2022. Methods: Quantitative and descriptive cross-sectional approach. Data were collected from Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF) cases registered in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN-DATASUS) across all regions of Brazil. The data collected includes information on the following variables: year of symptom, evolution, sex, race, environment of infection, region of notification, and age group. Subsequently, the data was entered into Microsoft Excel to create tables and graphs. The chi-square test was then applied to statistically analyze the associations between qualitative variables. A modified Poisson regression model with robust variance was constructed to analyze the age group data and determine which categories had different probabilities of death. The results show the estimates obtained for prevalence ratios, as well as their respective confidence intervals and p-values. The statistical software SAS version 9.4 was used to perform the analysis and a significance level of 5% was considered. Results: From 2018 to 2022, a total of 1126 cases of BSF were reported. Out of these cases, 59.3% (668) were cured, 32.4% (364) resulted in death, 1.1% (13) died from other causes and 7.2% (81) had no recorded outcome. Regarding the region with the highest death rate, the Southeast region led with 99.45% (362) of cases, followed by the Northeast region with 0.45% (2). As for the age group, the majority (63.7%) fell between the ages of 20 and 59 years old. In terms of race/color, 52.7% of the population identified as white. The platelet indices Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) and Plate-letcrit (PCT) provided by automated hematology analysis are rarely used in clinical practice. Platelets play a central role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and high MPV has been associated to more reactive platelets and regarded as an independent risk factor for myocardial infarction. In this study, platelet indices were evaluated in 39 patients with ACS presenting two altered biochemical parameters, C reactive protein (CRP) and creatine kinase fraction MB (CK-MB). The results obtained showed significantly higher MPV and PDW values in the group with ACS in comparison to the control group. Also observed was a weak but significant positive correlation between MPV and CK-MB. In view of findings of previous studies, which have associated macroplatelets with higher thrombotic potential our results suggest that the use of the MPV and PDW indices as additional and complementary markers may contribute to the investigation and follow-up of thrombotic risk in patients with ACS.

Effect of Corrosion Inhibitor Used in Surface Treatment on the Anticorrosive Performance of an Epoxy Paint System

The mechanism of corrosion is mainly sustained by an electrochemical process, in which anodic and cathodic reactions take place, keeping their kinetics alive by electrons and ions fluxes. Several specific conditions can accelerate corrosion processes. When studying anticorrosive coatings, one of them is the contamination of metallic surface by soluble salts prior to coating, leading to premature failure of the paint system due to corrosion between the metallic surface and the coating. So the surface preparation step prior to coating is a procedure of great importance to the coating anticorrosive performance. The aim of this step is to clean the surface by removing visible and non-visible contaminants. Usually, wet abrasive blasting methods are the most efficient ones to achieve the latter objective, because they may clean the surface, create a surface roughness and also remove the non-visible contaminants, as they use water as a media. On the other hand, evaporation of water after blasting may create flash rust and to avoid this, it is common to use corrosion inhibitors in the water of wet blasting methods. In this paper, the use of sodium tetraborate (borax) as a corrosion inhibitor in wet abrasive blasting is discussed. Electrochemical measurements and mass loss tests show that a borax content of 1% in a saline solution has the best inhibitory action over carbon steel and zinc surfaces, allowing postponing for the painting step some time. However, residual borax left on the surface generated blistering and corrosion under coating, during accelerated corrosion test in a humidity condensation chamber. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed that borax accelerated the permeation of water through the coating, downgrading the anticorrosive performance of the paint system.

In the last decade, Brazil was the scene of two of the world’s biggest disasters related to mining tailings dams. The collapse of the Mariana and Brumadinho dams was catastrophic event that brought to light major environmental and humanitarian crises. Facts like this incite debate on the safety of dam construction methods and highlight the need for a broad discussion of dam safety legislation in the country. From the above, this paper promotes a review of various forms of construction of tailings dams and their associated problems, as well as discusses the techniques for soil reinforcement and their construction methods. The work also brings an overview of the Brazilian dams from April to July 2019, tracing the context of the Brazilian tailings dams months after the tragedy of Brumadinho. The methodology includes a robust literature review and discourse analysis. In Brazil, the number of ruptured dams is alarming, especially in the state of Minas Gerais, in which more than 7 have broken in the last two decades. Among the damages, the deaths impact society abruptly and were cataloged 455 deaths, of which 216 correspond to the rupture of the dam of the Córrego do Feijão mine in Brumadinho. To evaluate and diagnose a dam, one should consider ordinance N ° 70,389, 2017 revoked by Resolution ANM n ° 95, of February 7, 2022. In this context, in March 2019, we experienced several disturbing situations regarding dam instability in the state of Minas Gerais, being categorized as risky structures. To exemplify, one can cite dams classified as level 2 risk that became level 3. Due to the above facts, several studies are being conducted to improve soil aspects. For example, we highlight the increase in soil resistance that can be done using commercial and alternative materials available in the environment.

Virus-specific immune responses have a major impact on the outcome of the infection. Viral agents that are characterized by latency, such as herpesviruses and polyomaviruses, require a continuous immune control to reduce the extent of viral reactivation, as viral clearance cannot be accomplished, independently from the anti-viral treatment. In transplant patients, morbidity and mortality related to viral infections are significantly increased. In fact, the key steps of activation of T-cells are major target for anti-rejection immunosuppressive therapy and anti-viral immune response may be altered when infected cells and cellular effectors of immune response coexist in a transplanted organ. The role of cellular immune response in controlling viral replication and the main methods employed for its evaluation will be discussed. In particular, the main features, including both advantages and limitations, of available assays, including intracellular cytokine staining, major histocompatibility complex- multimer-based assays, Elispot assay, and Quanti FERON test, will be described. The potential applications of these assays in the transplant context will be discussed, particularly in relation to cytomegalovirus and polyomavirus BK infection. The relevance of introducing viro-immunological monitoring, beside virological monitoring, in order to identify the risk profile for viral infections in the transplant patients will allows for define a patient-tailored clinical management, particular in terms of modulation of immunosuppressive therapy and anti-viral administration.

Feature reduction with PCA/ KPCA for gait classification with different assistive devices

Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to propose a gait analysis technique that aims to identify differences and similarities in gait performance between three different assistive devices(ADs).Design/methodology/approach–Two feature reduction techniques,linear principal component analysis(PCA)and nonlinear kernel-PCA(KPCA),are expanded to provide a comparison of the spatio-temporal,symmetrical indexes and postural control parameters among the three different ***,a multiclass support vector machine(MSVM)with different approaches is designed to evaluate the potential of PCA and KPCA to extract relevant gait features that can differentiate between ***–Results demonstrated that symmetrical indexes and postural control parameters are better suited to provide useful information about the different gait patterns that total knee arthroplasty(TKA)patients present when walking with different *** combination of KPCA and MSVM with discriminant functions(MSVM DF)resulted in a noticeably improved *** combination demonstrated that,with symmetric indexes and postural control parameters,it is possible to extract with high-accuracy nonlinear gait features for automatic classification of gait patterns with ***/value–The information obtained with the proposed technique could be used to identify benefits and limitations of ADs on the rehabilitation process and to evaluate the benefit of their use in TKA patients.
