Dose is one of the most important factors of nanomaterial（NM） toxicity. Low levels of NMs are considered to be safe[1]. In this study, we analyzed the potential toxicity of Graphene at relatively low concentration on plasma membrane ABC transporter activity of Human cell line HepG2. In the cell membrane, ABC transporters are common and are known to play a crucial role in multidrug resistance（MDR） [2, 3], where they function as efflux pumps and are responsible for chemotherapeutic drug resistance in cancer cells. ABC transporters can also pump xenobiotics out of the cell using an ATPdependent mechanism, thus reducing potential toxic effects. The results showed that Graphene（＜0.5 μg/mL） did not decrease cell viability, generate reactive oxygen species（ROS） and cause cell apoptosis. However, Graphene at non-toxic concentration could increase Calcein-AM（CAM, an indicator of membrane ABC transporter activities） accumulation, indicating inhibition of ABC transporters’ activities. This inhibition could be observed even at 0.005μg/mL, which is 100-times and lower than its lowest toxic concentration from cytotoxicity experiments. The inhibition of ABC transporters significantly sensitized the toxicity of paraquat, a toxic and widely used herbicide and a known substrate of ABC transporters. The potential mechanism of inhibition of membrane transporter activities caused by Graphene was further analyzed by gene expression, protein expression and membrane integrity and function. Based on above results, we assume that Graphene can damage cell membrane functions, and thus causing an inhibition of potentially all plasma membrane transporter（P-gp/MRP/BCRP） activity. This study shows the amplification of environmental effects of Graphene at non-toxic concentrations, which could significantly cause the inhibition of ABC transporters’ activities.

Conical tank level control using fractional order PID controllers： a simulated and experimental study

In this paper, simulated and experimental results on the conical tank level control are presented. PI/PID controllers of integer order （IO） as well as of fractional order （FO） are studied and compared. The tuning parameters are obtained first by using root locus （RL） and Ziegler and Nichols methods, for comparison purposes. Next, particle swarm optimization （PSO） is employed to determine the optimal controllers＇ parameters using as fitness function the integral of the absolute value of tracking error （IAE）. From the experimental results it is concluded that PI/FOPI are the controllers presenting the lowest IAE indexes, whereas PID/FOPID controllers present the lowest energy consumption by the control signal.

In vitro antioxidant,antilipoxygenase and antimicrobial activities of extracts from seven climbing plants belonging to the Bignoniaceae

Objectives： This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant capacity, to determine the anti-inflammatory effect due to lipoxygenase inhibition and to test the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts from leaves of seven climbing species belonging to the Bignoniaceae family. These species are Adenocalyrnrna rnarginatum （Cham.） DC., Amphilophium vauthieri DC., Cuspidaria convoluta （VEIL） A. H. Gentry, Dolichandra dentata （K. Schum.） L. G. Lohmann, Fridericia caudigera （S. Moore） L. G. Lohmann, Fridericia chica （Bonpl.） L. G. Lohmann and Tanaecium selloi （Spreng.） L. G. Lohmann. Methods： The antioxidant activity was evaluated using three methods, 2,2＇-azino-bis（3-ethylbenzothiazo line-6-sulfonic acid）（ABTS）, 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl （DPPH）, and ferric reducing antioxidant power. Lipoxygenase-inhibiting activity was assayed spectrophotometrically; the result was expressed as percent inhibition. The antimicrobial activity was assessed using the agar disk diffusion method. Minimal inhibitory concentration （MIC） and minimal bactericidal]fungicidal concentration were also determined for each extract against 12 pathogenic bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus and seven fungal strains of the Candida genus. The identification of the major compounds present in the most promising extract was established by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Results： C convoluta, F. caudigera, and F. chica exhibited the best antioxidant activity by scavenging DPPH and ABTS~ radicals and reducing Fe3＋ ion. These extracts showed a notable inhibition of lipnxygenase. F. caudigera was found to have the lower MIC value against S. aureus strains and six Candida species. The extracts of F. caudigera and C. convoluta were active even against methicillin-resistant S. aureus. C convoluta had higher total phenol content, better antioxidant activity and superior anti- inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. The main phenolic compounds found in this extract

A novel induction motor control scheme using IDA-PBC

A new control scheme for induction motors is proposed in the present paper, applying the interconnection and damping assignment-passivity based control （IDA-PBC） method. The scheme is based exclusively on passivity based control, without restricting the input frequency as it is done in field oriented control （FOC）. A port-controlled Hamiltonian （PCH） model of the induction motor is deduced to make the interconnection and damping of energy explicit on the scheme. The proposed controller is validated under computational simulations and experimental tests using an inverter prototype.

Ecological succession of benthic organisms on niche-type artificial reefs

As part of efforts to restore fishery resources and recover damaged coastal ecosystems,artificial reefs are often anchored on the seafloor in coastal zones,to provide new habitats for marine *** aim of the study was to describe the structure of a community of benthic invertebrates colonising a niche-type artificial reef(AATN in Spanish).Nine structures were anchored at depths of 16±1.5 m for 99 weeks(22 months)in the Area of Benthic Resource Management and Exploitation(AMERB)in coastal waters of the Region of Bio Bio,*** results showed that,at 3 months from submersion of the NTAR,much of the artificial substrate remained bare and there were only low levels of specimens of Balanus ***,showing mean coverage of 11.26%,and even lower proportions of Rhodophyta,with mean coverage of 0.34%.At 6 months,the presence of hydrozoans was seen,decreasing the coverage of the barnacles,which was aided further at 8 months with the arrival of barnacle predatory *** 8 months,new benthic invertebrates appeared and competed for the *** included sponges and *** 99 weeks,the hydrozoans dominated the substrate,followed by barnacles and Rhodophyta,the first colonising organisms,leading to colonisation by motile macro-invertebrates,mainly consisting of crustaceans,echinoderms and *** AATN artificial system provides an ideal substrate for the development of early ecological succession and the use of this technology should be feasible in the recovery process of habitat damaged by anthropogenic actions and climate change.

AIM： TO evaluate the association between poly- morphisms XRCC1 Arg194Trp and Arg399GIn and XRCC3 Thr241Met and the risk for chronic gastritis and gastric cancer, in a Southeastern Brazilian population. METHODS： Genotyping by PCR-RFLP was carried out on 202 patients with chronic gastritis （CG） and 160 patients with gastric cancer （GC）, matched to 202 （Cl） and 150 （C2） controls, respectively. RESULTS： No differences were observed among the studied groups with regard to the genotype distribution of XRCC1 codons 194 and 399 and of XRCC3 codon 241. However, the combined analyses of the three variant alleles （194Trp, 399Gin and 241Met） showed an increased risk for chronic gastritis when compared to the GC group. Moreover, an interaction between the polymorphic alleles and demographic and environmental factors was observed in the CG and GC groups. XRCC1 194Trp was associated with smoking in the CG group, while the variant alleles XRCC1 399Gin and XRCC3 241Met were related with gender, smoking, drinking and Hpylori infection in the CG and GC groups. CONCLUSION： Our results showed no evidence of a rela-tionship between the polymorphisms XRCC1 Arg194Trp and Arg399Gln and XRCC3 Thr241Met and the risk of chronic gastritis and gastric cancer in the Brazilianpopulation, but the combined effect of these variants may interact to increase the risk for chronic gastritis, considered a premalignant lesion. Our data also indicate a gene-environment interaction in the susceptibility to chronic gastritis and gastric cancer.

More effective approaches are needed in the treatment of blood cancers,in particular acute myeloid leukemia(AML),that are able to eliminate resistant leukemia stem cells(LSCs)at the bone marrow(BM),after a chemotherapy session,and then enhance hematopoietic stem cell(HSC)engraftment for the re-establishment of the HSC ***,we investigate whether light-activatable nanoparticles(NPs)encapsulating all-trans-retinoic acid(RA^(+)NPs)could solve both *** in vitro results show that mouse AML cells transfected with RA^(+)NPs differentiate towards antitumoral M1 macrophages through RIG.1 and OASL gene *** in vivo results further show that mouse AML cells transfected with RA^(+)NPs home at the BM after transplantation in an AML mouse *** photo-disassembly of the NPs within the grafted cells by a blue laser enables their differentiation towards a macrophage *** macrophage activation seems to have systemic anti-leukemic effect within the BM,with a significant reduction of leukemic cells in all BM compartments,of animals treated with RA^(+)NPs,when compared with animals treated with empty *** a separate group of experiments,we show for the first time that normal HSCs transfected with RA^(+)NPs show superior engraftment at the BM niche than cells without treatment or treated with empty *** is the first time that the activity of RA is tested in terms of long-term hematopoietic reconstitution after transplant using an in situ activation approach without any exogenous priming or genetic conditioning of the transplanted ***,the approach documented here has the potential to improve consolidation therapy in AML since it allows a dual intervention in the BM niche:to tackle resistant leukemia and improve HSC engraftment at the same time.
