Growth of cucumber seedlings in different varieties as affected by light environment

High-quality cucumber seedlings are a prerequisite for ensuring high yield of *** the continuous increase of cucumber planting area in China,the demand for high-quality cucumber seedlings is also *** of the important ways to improve the quality of cucumber seedlings is to improve the light environment by using artificial light *** this study,three cucumber seedlings(***,*** and ***)were grown for 23 d under eight levels of daily light integral(DLI)at 4.3 mol/(m^(2)·d),8.6 mol/(m^(2)·d),10.1 mol/(m^(2)·d),13.0 mol/(m^(2)·d),5.8 mol/(m^(2)·d),11.5 mol/(m^(2)·d),14.4 mol/(m^(2)·d)and 17.3 mol/(m^(2)·d),*** results showed that when DLI was 14.4 mol/(m^(2)·d),the seedling height,stem diameter,total leaf area and shoot dry/fresh weight of all three cucumber cultivars reached the maximum,while hypocotyl length decreased with the increase of light *** DLI was 14.4 mol/(m^(2)·d),j.ntong and Xiazhiguang had the highest health index,which were 49.29 and 28.56,respectively,while that of Yunv was 81.59(DLI=14.4 mol/(m^(2)·d)).With the increase of DLI,the photosynthetic capacity of cucumber increases *** highest net photosynthetic rate was shown at DLI of 14.4 mol/(m^(2)·d),while the chlorophyll content of cucumber seedlings of all three cultivars were less affected by *** and Yunv had the highest chlorophyll content when DLI was 8.6 mol/(m^(2)·d)because they were adapted to low-light *** conclusion,the DLI of 14.4 mol/(m^(2)·d)for j.ntong and Xiazhiguang,while that of 17.3 mol/(m^(2)·d)for Yunv are suggested for the light environment design of factory-cultivated seedling for cucumber.

Intradermal administration of formalin to the cheek induces itch as well as pain behaviors in rats

Obj.ctive · Formalin is a classic and most widely used algogenic substance, but its itchy effect is not clear. The present study aims to explore the hypothesis that formalin may induce itch as well as pain. Methods · Flinching, as well as licking and forelimb wiping of the site of inj.ction were counted as pain responses, whereas biting and hind paw scratching of the cheek were counted as itchy responses. To discriminate formalin-induced sensations in rats, the irritant(saline as control) was inj.cted, and then pain and itchy responses were *** · Intraplantar inj.ction of formalin elicited biphasic behavior responses characterized as flinching, as well as biting or licking of the hind paw without significant gender differences. Following intradermal administration of formalin to the cheek, rats exhibited episodic forelimb wiping of the cheek, representative of pain. No gender difference was noticed for this type of behavior. In addition, episodes of hind paw scratches of the cheek, representative of pruritoceptive responses, also occurred. Interestingly, hind paw scratches appeared to be more pronounced in male than in female rats. Conclusion · Intradermal administration of formalin elicits pruritoceptive as well as nociceptive responses in rats.

Background:Epidemiological data indicate an association between cadmium exposure and risk of bone fracture;however,clinical treatment of cadmium-induced fracture is *** vitamin C(VC)reportedly reduces cadmium-induced fracture,its pharmacological mechanism remains ***:Thus,we used a network pharmacology approach and molecular docking analysis to identify core targets,functional processes,and biological pathways involved in the anti-fracture action of ***:Bioinformatics identified 17 intersection targets of VC and cadmium-induced fracture,Nine core targets were characterized,including tumor protein p53,epidermal growth factor receptor,proto-oncogene c,mitogen-activated protein kinase-1(MAPK1),MAPK3,signal transducer and activator of transcription-3,MAPK14,prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2,and estrogen receptor ***,findings of molecular docking analysis indicated that VC exerted effective binding capacity in cadmium-induced ***,biological processes,cell components,molecular functions,and pharmacological pathways involved in the action of VC against cadmium-induced fracture were identified and ***:Based on these findings,we conclude that VC exhibits its anti-cadmium-induced fracture effects by promoting osteoblastic regeneration and proliferation,and inhibiting inflammatory *** core targets may serve as biomarkers for diagnosing cadmium-induced fractures.

Functional response of a parasitoid Ganaspidium utilis （Hymenoptera： Eucoilidae） on the leafminer Liriomyza trifolii （Diptera： Agromyzidae）

Functional response of a solitary, larval-pupal endoparasitoid of Liriomyza leafminers, Ganaspidium utilis Beardsley, was estimated on Liriomyza trifolii Burgess at three temperatures （17℃, 25℃, 29℃ ） and host densities. A type Ⅱ random parasitoid equation （RPE） was used to estimate instantaneous search rate and handling time. The instantaneous search rate increased as temperature increased. All of the RPE regressions obtained for functional response of G. utilis at different temperatures were significant （P〈0.01）. The slope of RPE regression lines was lower across the temperatures. At 29±2℃, the maximum number of larvae parasitized was 7.8 per day. It decreased to 7.2 larvae parasitized at 25±2℃. At 17±2℃, no significant increment of parasitization was observed due to the host density increments. The estimated handling time was lowest at 17±2℃ and highest at 25 ± 2℃, respectively. The ability of G. utilis to find and parasitize L. trifolii over a wide range of temperatures makes them a good candidate for biological control of Liriomyza leafminers.

Bioacoustic variation of swimbladder disturbance sounds in Neotropical doradoid catfishes （Siluriformes： Doradidae, Auchenipteridae）： potential morphological correlates

Swimbladder disturbance sounds of doradoid catfishes （Doradidae and Aucheniptefidae） demonstrated striking waveform and spectrographic variation. We surveyed sounds of 25 doradoid species in 20 genera comparing these to sounds of four vocal outgroup catfish families. Sounds were either continuous waveforms （lacking interpulses） or pulsed （groups of pulses repeated at fixed temporal intervals）. This is the first evidence for swimbladder calls with fixed interpulse patterns in catfishes. Vocal mechanism components that were similar between doradids and auchenipterids included： swimbladder shape, swimbladder dimensions and sonic muscle-somatic index. Morphological traits that showed variation among taxa and were evaluated for po- tential correlates of call diversity are： 1） diverticula （marginal outpocketings of the swimbladder with no connection to inner ear） and 2） elastic spring apparatus Mtillerian rami （ESA-Mr）. Within the doradid subfamilies and within the Auchenipteridae most species differed significantly in dominant frequency with frequency ranges overlapping to some extent for most. Doradid swim- bladder diverticula did not explain dominant frequency variation within the doradoid superfamily. Some doradids with conical ESA-Mr had the highest dominant frequency sounds. Auchenipterids included both relatively lower and higher dominant fre- quency sound producers but lacked diverticula and had discoidal ESA-Mr. Comparing a phylogeny of doradoid genera with out- group taxa, we infer that complex diverticula and conical ESA-Mr are derived characters within the Doradidae. Species repre- senting outgroup families produced either continuous lower dominant frequency sounds （aspredinids, mochokids and pseudopimelodids） or pulsed higher dominant frequency sounds （pimelodids） [Current Zoology 58 （1）： 171-188, 2012].

Elevated fibroblast growth factor 23(FGF23)in X-linked hypophosphatemia(XLH)results in rickets and phosphate wasting,manifesting by severe bone and dental ***,a FGF23-neutralizing antibody,an alternative to conventional treatment(phosphorus and active vitamin D analogs),showed significant improvement in the long bone ***,we examined whether FGF23 antibody(FGF23-mAb)also improved the dentoalveolar features associated with ***-week-old male Hyp mice were inj.cted weekly with 4 or 16 mg·kg−1 of FGF23-mAb for 2 months and compared to wild-type(WT)and vehicle(PBS)treated Hyp mice(n=3–7 mice).Micro-CT analyses showed that both doses of FGF23-mAb restored dentin/cementum volume and corrected the enlarged pulp volume in Hyp mice,the higher concentration resulting in a rescue similar to WT ***23-mAb treatment also improved alveolar bone volume fraction and mineral density compared to vehicle-treated *** revealed improved mineralization of the dentoalveolar tissues,with a decreased amount of osteoid,predentin and *** periodontal ligament attachment was also observed,evidenced by restoration of the acellular *** preclinical data were consistent with the retrospective analysis of two patients with XLH showing that burosumab treatment improved oral *** together,our data show that the dentoalveolar tissues are greatly improved by FGF23-mAb treatment,heralding its benefit in clinics for dental abnormalities.

Friction stir welding （FSW） technology is being increasingly attractive in welding steels on account of the high-quality weld formation and excellent weld properties. The feasibility of FSW of steels has been convinced for nearly 20 years. However, the application progress for FSW of steels is slower than that of aluminum alloys owing to the high cost and poor usability of tools. The FSW tools are called as the heart of FSW process which is critical for welding quality control and the weld microstructure and properties. The recent progresses in research and development of FSW tools for welding steels have been reviewed. Material selections, geometry parameters, wear behavior and use life of the tools are summarized from the available literatures.

LED supplementary strategy based on hourly light integral for improving the yield and quality of greenhouse strawberries

Supplemental lighting is critical to the growth of greenhouse crops under the environmental conditions of low temperatures combined with weak radiation during the winter and spring *** achieve the essential daily light integral(DLI)for greenhouse crop growth,a supplemental light strategy was proposed based on hourly light integral(HLI).The target HLI was calculated by dividing the target DLI by the duration of light exposure,while the actual HLI was obtained by accumulating the Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density(PPFD)based on real-time ***,the supplemental lighting duration for the next hour was determined by the difference between the target HLI and the actual HLI from all previous ***,the supplementary lighting strategy incorporated maximum values for both PPFD and temperature,and the supplemental light was withheld whenever the actual PPFD or temperature exceeded these *** experiment was conducted on strawberries in a commercial greenhouse,targeting a DLI of 12.6 mol/(m2∙d),with no supplemental lighting as the *** results indicated that LED supplemental lighting based on HLI increased the DLI to approximately10 mol/(m2∙d)and raised the strawberry canopy temperature by 1°C-2°*** to the control treatment,the LED supplemental lighting based on HLI significantly improved the net photosynthetic rate,stem thickness,number of leaves,leaf length,and leaf width of the strawberry ***,the fruit yield per plant,soluble solids content,and sugar-acid ratio in the supplemental lighting treatment increased by 32%,21%,and 33%,***,LED supplemental lighting based on HLI is an effective strategy for improving the yield and quality of greenhouse crop production.
