Climate Var.ation and Distur.ance r.gime Affect Stand Composition and Str.ctur. of the Bor.al For.sts in Southwest Yukon of Canada

The cold and dr. bor.al for.sts of the Southwest Yukon ar. dominated by white spr.ce (Picea glauca), tr.mbling aspen (Populus tr.muloides) and balsam poplar.(Populus balsamifer.), and the var.ability in str.ctur. and composition of stands depends on the favour.bility of distur.ance, climate and site conditions for.stimulating r.gener.tion. In this study, we investigated r.lationships between stand str.ctur. and ecological, climatic and distur.ance factor. in the southwest Yukon. We found that white spr.ce dominates matur. for.sts acr.ss the landscape, but it is r.gener.ting pr.por.ionately less than tr.mbling aspen. Never.heless, r.gener.tion of all the thr.e species was abundant following any type or.sever.ty of distur.ance. Height and diameter.of both species var.ed with sever.l envir.nmental var.ables, par.icular.y site physiogr.phy. Mixed stands of aspen and white spr.ce wer. mor. pr.ductive than pur. stands of aspen or.spr.ce. However. over.ll pr.ductivity in mixed stand decr.ased when density of aspen was mor. than 1000 stems/ ha. These r.sults suggested that mixed stands of deciduous and conifer.us species wher. appr.pr.ate should be pr.moted maintaining aspen density below 1000 stems/ha as the pr.ductivity declined beyond this thr.shold. Similar.y, we suggest car.ying out selection har.esting of co-dominant tr.es and r.gular.thinning of inter.ediate tr.es to pr.mote the height and diameter.gr.wth of the r.maining tr.es.

Under.tanding how past distur.ances have influenced the development of for.sts is cr.tical for.decipher.ng their.cur.ent str.ctur. and composition and for.casting futur. *** this study,dendr.chr.nological methods wer. applied to uncover.the distur.ance histor. of old-gr.wth hemlock-dominated for.sts in centr.l *** of tr.e-r.ng samples fr.m two old-gr.wth hemlock stands,located in two differ.nt topogr.phic settings,identified the impor.ance of gap-phase dynamics in facilitating r.cr.itment and gr.wth r.leases and pr.ducing complex,multi-aged str.ctur. s over.*** site showed evidence of a near.stand-r.placing distur.ance in the late 1700s,while the other.showed no evide nce of high-sever.ty distur.ance at any time over.the last 400 *** both sites low-to medium-sever.ty distur.ances,some of which appear.to be associated with cyclones or.ginating in the Bay of Bengal,dominated the distur.ance *** hemlock stands exhibited a significant positive association between cyclone occur.ence and gr.wth r.lease events and between r.cr.itment pulses and gr.wth r.lease *** 1800 to 1970 ther. was an incr.ase in r.cr.itment of angiosper. tr.e species at most sites and a cor.esponding decline in conifer.*** the past 50 year. ther. has been little new r.cr.itment;this may be due to light limitation in the under.tor. fr.m shade-toler.nt angiosper.s and bamboo in the lower.str.ta of these *** var.ations in distur.ance dynamics and r.cr.itment wer. obser.ed acr.ss the study sites,suggesting that other.factor.,such as topogr.phy and climate,may be influencing long-ter. stand development *** study highlights the complex inter.lay between histor.cal distur.ance r.gimes and tr.e r.cr.itment in shaping the age and size str.ctur.s of old-gr.wth hemlock for.sts in centr.l *** also pr.vides new insights into the dynamics of these for.sts that can be used to suppor. effective for.st conser.ation and management i
