In addition to providing a cleaning service to the host by removing ticks, oxpeckers frequently feed on blood, mucus, and saliva, inflicting potential damage on the host. Here, we used DNA metabarcoding on faecal samples to analyze the taxonomic composition of the trophic interactions of the Yellow-billed Oxpecker(Buphagus africanus) and Red-billed Oxpecker(B. erythrorhynchus) in northeastern Namibia. In contrast to conventional methods, DNA metabarcoding allows for a detailed identification of dietary resources encompassing both mammal hosts and consumed arthropods within the same samples. With this information, we examined differences in the diet composition between oxpecker species and localities, as well as the co-occurrence between host and arthropod species. Our findings revealed that oxpeckers predominantly source their diet from mammals, ticks, and flies; however, ticks and flies rarely co-occur in the diet of an individual. We observed variability among individuals in their feeding ecology, which is strongly correlated with locality and, to a lesser extent, with the mammal host. We noted a high degree of mobility between hosts within relatively short periods, with 32% of the samples showing traces of at least two mammal hosts. This study illustrates the dynamic foraging behavior of these specialized symbiotic birds, shedding light on their potential role in pest control services and disease transmission.

Competency-based assessments for healthcare professionals are critical for safe and effective client outcomes. Rehabilitation clinical skill competency assessments must be validated and revised to produce safe and skilled practitioners. The revised American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) fieldwork Performance Evaluation (fWPE) instrument measures occupational therapy student performance to determine readiness for practice. The assessment includes thirty-seven competencies that address both profession specific clinical skills and general professional behavior skills. The objective of this study was to use Rasch methods to explore the use of the revised fWPE in actual fieldwork practice and to determine the instrument’s psychometric properties when separating the item components into two distinct subdomains: General Health Professions Competences and Occupational Therapy-Specific Competencies. Internal construct validity and test reliability were analyzed using data from 149 occupational therapy students after completing their initial Level II A fieldwork clinical internship. This study examined the item difficulty hierarchy, item fit, person-fit to model, person separation index, person separation reliability coefficient, strata, ceiling and floor effect, and unidimensionality of the fWPE instrument as a whole and as two separate domains. With the exception of not meeting the criteria for unidimensionality, the full fWPE instrument and the Occupational Therapy-Specific Competencies subdomain showed acceptable item-level psychometrics for reliability and precision. While the General Health Professions Competencies subdomain showed good item-level psychometrics, it was below the criterion for reliability and only separated the sample into two strata. Sodium-ion batteries(SIBs)have rapidly risen to the forefront of energy storage systems as a promising supplementary for Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs).Na_(3)V_(2)(PO_(4))_(2)f_(3)(NVPf)as a common cathode of SIBs,features the merits of high operating voltage,small volume change and favorable specific energy ***,it suffers from poor cycling stability and rate performance induced by its low intrinsic ***,we propose an ingenious strategy targeting superior SIBs through cross-linked NVPf with multi-dimensional nanocarbon frameworks composed of amorphous carbon and carbon nanotubes(NVPf@C@CNTs).This rational design ensures favorable particle size for shortened sodium ion transmission pathway as well as improved electronic transfer network,thus leading to enhanced charge transfer kinetics and superior cycling *** from this unique structure,significantly improved electrochemical properties are obtained,including high specific capacity(126.9 mAh g^(-1)at 1 C,1 C=128 mA g^(-1))and remarkably improved long-term cycling stability with 93.9%capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 20 *** energy density of 286.8 Wh kg^(-1)can be reached for full cells with hard carbon as anode(NVPf@C@CNTs//HC).Additionally,the electrochemical performance of the full cell at high temperature is also investigated(95.3 mAh g^(-1)after 100 cycles at 1 C at 50℃).Such nanoscale dual-carbon networks engineering and thorough discussion of ion diffusion kinetics might make contributions to accelerating the process of phosphate cathodes in SIBs for large-scale energy storages.

Kernel texture(grain hardness) is a fundamental and determining factor related to wheat(Triticum spp.) milling, baking and flour *** are three kernel texture classes in wheat: soft and hard hexaploid(***), and very hard durum(*** ***).The genetic basis for these three classes lies with the Puroindoline ***, the easiest means of quantifying kernel texture is with the Single Kernel Characterization System(SKCS), although other means are valid and can provide fundamental material *** SKCS values for soft wheat would be around 25 and for durum wheat≥*** kernel durum wheat was created via homeologous recombination using the ph1b mutation, which facilitated the transfer of ca.28 Mbp of5 DS that replaced ca.21 Mbp of 5 *** 5 DS translocation contained a complete and intact Hardness locus and both Puroindoline *** of the Puroindoline genes in durum grain resulted in kernel texture and flour milling characteristics nearly identical to that of soft wheat, with high yields of break and straightgrade flours, which had small particle size and low starch *** water absorption was markedly reduced compared to durum flour and *** strength was essentially unchanged and reflected the inherent gluten properties of the durum *** quality was essentially equal-to-or-better than pasta made from ***, soft durum germplasm showed good potential with moderate grain yield and resistance to a number of fungal pathogens and *** breeding efforts will no doubt further improve the quality and competitiveness of soft durum cultivars.

The past decade has seen an explosion of new information on the physiology of penile erection, and pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction （ED）. Hypercholesterolemia is a chronic condition that can lead to degeneration in the vasculature bed and can result in ED if the penile vasculature is involved. Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels from preexisting vasculature. Therapeutic angiogenesis seeks to harness the mechanisms of vascular growth to treat disorders of inadequate tissue perfusion, such as coronary artery disease and ED. There have been tremendous changes in the field of therapeutic angiogenesis over the past decade, and there is much promise for the future. Initial preclinical work with cytokine growth factor delivery resulted in a great deal of enthusiasm for the treatment of ischemic heart and/or peripheral vascular disease, though clinical studies have not achieved similar success. With an increased understanding of the complex mechanisms involved in angiogenesis, novel therapies which target multiple different angiogenic pathways are also being developed and tested. The penis is a convenient tissue target for gene therapy because of its external location and accessibility, the ubiquity of endothelial lined spaces, and low level of blood flow, especially in the flaccid state. Therapeutic angiogenesis is an exciting field that continues to evolve. This review will focus on the development of growth factors for hypercholesterolemic ED, the use of various growth factors for ED therapy, their routes of delivery, and the results in animal studies.

AIM:To assess the efficacy and safety of mycophenolate mofetil(MMf)prospectively in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)patients intolerant or refractory to conventional medical ***:Crohn's disease(CD)or ulcerative colitis/ IBD unclassified(UC/IBDU)patients intolerant or refractory to conventional medical therapy received MMf(500-2000 mg bid).Clinical response was assessed by the Harvey Bradshaw index(HBI)or colitis activity index(CAI)after 2,6 and 12 mo of therapy,as were steroid usage and adverse ***:fourteen patients(9 CD/5 UC/IBDU;8M/6f;mean age 50.4 years,range 28-67 years)were treated and prospectively assessed for their response to oral *** the 11 patients who were not in remission on commencing MMf,7/11(63.6%)achieved remission by 8 *** 3 patients in remission on commencing MMf maintained their *** patients were still on MMf at 6 mo with 9/14(64.3%)in remission,while of 12 patients followed for 12 mo,8 were in remission without dose escalation(66.7%).Three patients were withdrawn from the MMf due to drug *** were no serious adverse events attributed due to the ***:MMf demonstrated efficacy in the management of difficult *** appeared safe,well tolerated and efficacious for both short and long-term therapy,without the need for dose *** evaluation of MMf comparing it to conventional immunosuppressants is required.

Long-term fertilization and crop rotation can influence both organic C sequestration as well as the C composition of soils and the more resistant organic C compounds contained in humic acid(HA). This study examined the effects of fertilization and cropping type(monoculture corn(MC) and Kentucky bluegrass sod(KBS) and corn-oat-alfalfa-alfalfa rotation(RC)) on the HA composition of soil from a 52-year field study in southern Ontario, Canada. Humic acid samples were extracted from soil, and elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, solid state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, and electron paramagnetic resonance methods were used to determine the influence of the cropping type on the characteristics of HA. Both fertilization and cropping type affected the chemical characteristics of HA. fertilization led to a 5.9% increase in C, a 7.6% decrease in O, and lower O/C and(N + O)/C ratios in HA as compared to the corresponding non-fertilized treatments. Rotation resulted in a lower proportion of C(48.1%) and a greater(N + O)/C ratio(0.7) relative to monoculture cropping. Infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that HA contained more C-O groups in fertilized soil than in non-fertilized soil under MC and KBS. fertilization increased the O-alkyl-C, phenolic-C, and free radical contents of HA relative to non-fertilization treatments. Rotation decreased the aliphatic and carboxyl groups and increased the O-alkyl, carbohydrate, aryl, and phenolic groups and free radicals, relative to MC and KBS. Both long-term crop rotation and fertilization dramatically modified the soil HA composition. Significant relationships were observed between the molecular composition of HA and soil organic C. Hence, humic acid characterization could be used as an indicator of the long-term sustainability of crop management practices.
