In the setting of an infected inflatable penile prosthesis （IPP）, removal of the reservoir is a surgical challenge. We describe a novel technique for IPP reservoir removal at the time of IPP explantation utilizing laparoscopic instruments. We present two cases of infected IPPs requiring complete removal of all components of the implant. The corporal cylinders and scrotal pump were removed via a single penoscrotal incision.

he internal genetic clock of semelparous mast-flowering bamboo species creates gregarious regions of flowering and death, thus leading to fuel-load accumulation that potentially promotes fire（Fire-Cycle Hypothesis）. Higher abundance of bamboo could be expected to provide greater fuel loads after flowering. Here, we investigated the possible link between bamboo dominance and fire occurrence. As the main food source for the giant panda in the Qinling mountains of China, Bashania fargesii（Farges Canebrake） and Fargesia qinlingensis（Arrow Bamboo） dominate lower（1000–1900 m） and higher elevations（1800–2700 m）, respectively. Four soil profiles（elevation ranging from 1240 to 2170 m） in areas of known recent bamboo flowering events（~1980） and adjacent non-flowering sites were assessed for phytoliths and charcoal. Characteristic phytoliths were chosen to describe bamboo dynamics, and charcoal particles were extracted from the soil to reconstruct fire history. Carbon 14 dating of soil charcoal samples was conducted using an accelerator mass spectrometry technique. In addition, we chose two depths（28–52 and 90–100 cm） in one Bashania profile（B. fargesii forest） and one Fargesia profile（F. qinlingensis forest） for phytolith dating. Our findings indicate that bamboo has been a dominant component of these ecosystems almost for the entire profile; some 6400 yrs for Bashania and ca. 10000 yrs for the Fargesia. It is also clear from the charcoal and phytolith data that bamboo abundance and recent mast flowering were significantly related to fire occurrence for lower elevation Bashania while the higher elevation Fargesia was not. One of the four profiles had chronological charcoal records throughout and the oldest charcoal aged was ~1410 yr BP, suggesting an anthropogenic origin. The mixing of phytolith and charcoal made it unrealistic to describe temporal dynamics of bamboo and fire events, and thus our interpretation is cognizant of the dating discrepancies and conservative（less-sp

Prunus persica(peach)trees carrying the“Pillar”or“Broomy”trait(br)have vertically oriented branches caused by loss-of-function mutations in a gene called TILLER ANGLE CONTROL 1(TAC1).TAC1 encodes a protein in the IGT gene family that includes LAZY1 and DEEPER ROOTING 1(DRO1),which regulate lateral branch and root orientations,*** we found that some of the native TAC1 alleles in the hexaploid plum species Prunus domestica,which has a naturally more upright stature,contained a variable length trinucleotide repeat within the same exon 3 region previously found to be disrupted in pillar peach *** silencing of TAC1 in plum resulted in trees with severely vertical branch orientations similar to those in pillar peaches but with an even narrower *** contrast,PpeTAC1 overexpression in plum led to trees with wider branch angles and more horizontal branch *** peach trees and transgenic plum lines exhibited pleiotropic phenotypes,including differences in trunk and branch diameter,stem growth,and twisting branch *** profiling of pillar peach trees revealed differential expression of numerous genes associated with biotic and abiotic stress,hormone responses,plastids,reactive oxygen,secondary,and cell wall ***,the data provide important clues for understanding TAC1 function and show that alteration of TAC1 expression may have broad applicability to agricultural and ornamental tree industries.

In 2012, Texas surpassed Arizona in migrant deaths. The majority of deaths occurred in the Rio Grande Valley, specifically in Brooks County, Texas. Brooks County is one of the poorest in the state and was overwhelmed with deaths, without appropriate resources to follow the state laws pertaining to the investigation of unidentified human remains. Until 2013, most remains that were not immediately identified were buried without collecting DNA samples and the location of burials was not recorded. Our paper outlines the difficulties searching for these burials, the struggles of the families of the missing, and the collaborative approaches to facilitating identifications in South Texas. Community outreach combined with geophysical surveys guide which cemeteries are in need of exhumations. Once ceme-teries are surveyed, archaeological methods are employed to exhume remains and docu-ment burials. Remains are taken to the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State for processing, analysis, and identification efforts. Undergraduate and graduate students clean remains and wash clothing and personal *** skeletal analysis, all information regarding the remains, including photographs of per-sonal effects, are uploaded to the National missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) and a DNA sample is submitted to the University of North Texas for inclusion in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) DNA database. However, CODIS lacks DNA family reference samples from many families of the missing due to families living outside the US or because they do not feel comfortable providing a DNA sample in the presence of law enforcement. Therefore, it is necessary to work with non-governmental organizations who specialize in collecting missing persons reports and DNA samples from the families of the missing. Working collaboratively with multiple agencies, identification of migrant remains is possible.

Alcohol-associated liver disease(ALD)is increasingly prevalent throughout the world(1).It remains the leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality worldwide and contributes to approximately 6%of global deaths(2).ALD encompasses a wide range of hepatic pathologies,including steatosis,steatohepatitis,fibrosis,and cirrhosis(3).Given the severe lack of therapeutic interventions available to reverse the progression of ALD,it is currently the leading indication for liver transplantation(4).Advancements within the field are needed to identify diagnostic biomarkers for early detection and to develop therapeutics to ameliorate hepatic dysfunction and pathologies associated with ALD.

Dynamics in animal-associated microbiota can be difficult to study due to community complexity. Previous work showed that microbial communities in the midguts of Pieris rapae larvae contain relatively few members. In this study, we used P. rapae to test hypotheses related to how diet impacts gastrointestinal microbiota. more specifically, we investigated how the concentration of sinigrin, a glucosinolate in the natural diet of this insect, alters microbial community structure. Larvae were fed either sterile wheat germ diet alone or amended with 3.0 mg/ml, 6.0 mg/ml, or 9.0 mg/ml of sinigrin. In order to determine shifts in the gut microbial community, 16S rRNA genes from midguts were subjected to pyrosequencing and analyzed. Sinigrin had a significant impact on microbial communities in fourth instar P. rapae larvae, but this was dependent on concentration. The predominant phyla in all treatment groups were Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. Significant difference in beta diversity was typically observed when sinigrin 6 mg/ml and the control treatment groups were compared. The impact of sinigrin on the structure of the midgut microbiota is dependent on concentration, but not in a linear fashion. This may indicate that types and concentrations of glucosinolates have varied impact on midgut microbial community.

AIm To determine if a standardized asthma severity scoring system(PASS) was associated with the time spent on continuous albuterol and length of stay in the pediatric intensive care unit(PICU).mETHODS This is a single center,retrospective chart review study at a major children's hospital in an urban *** qualify for this study,participants must have been admitted to the PICU with a diagnosis of status *** were a total of 188 participants between the ages of two and nineteen,excluding patients receiving antibiotics for *** was calculated upon PICU *** were put into one of three categories based on PASS: ≤ 7(mild),8-11(moderate),and ≥ 12(severe).The groups were compared based on different variables,including length of continuous albuterol and PICU *** The age distribution across all groups was *** median length of continuous albuterol was longest in the severe group with a duration of 21.5 h(11.5-27.5),compared to 15(7.75-23.75) and 10(5-15) in the moderate and mild groups,respectively(P = 0.001).Thelength of stay was longest in the severe group,with a stay of 35.6 h(22-49) compared to 26.5(17-30) and 17.6(12-29) in the moderate and mild groups,respectively(P = 0.001).CONCLUSION A higher PASS is associated with a longer time on continuous albuterol,an increased likelihood to require noninvasive ventilation,and a longer stay in the *** may help safely distribute asthmatics to lower and higher levels of care in the future.
