Iron oxide nanoparticles have becom. of great interest in the m.dical field for their potential uses in areas such as biom.gnetic im.ging and hypotherm.a cancer treatm.nt. Traditionally, particles for these applications are produced through batch-based m.thodologies. Herein, we dem.nstrate an alternative continuous flow production m.thod for the synthesis of Fe304 iron oxide nanoparticles. Advantages of continuous flow over the batch m.thod include consistent form.tion of uniform.y spherical particles, thorough m.xing of reactants, and capacity for high-volum. particle production. In this study, a continu- ous flow reaction m.chanism.was proposed in which stoichiom.tric control of reactants had the potential to control final particle size. The project was conducted under the supposition that the iron oleatelligand ratio in the precursor was the greatest size control factor, with a higher ratio resulting in sm.ller parti- cles. The resulting particles produced by this continuous m.thod were characterized by high-resolution transm.ssion electron m.croscopy, X-ray diffraction, and m.gnetom.try.

We perform.d a detailed photom.tric analysis of eight ultra-short period eclipsing binaries(USPEBs) using the Wilson-Devinney m.thod. We present the m.deled light curves and derived photom.tric solutions. The USPEBs with period(P)≤0.21 d considered in our study belong to W-subtype having shallow contact factor(f)m.ss ratio(q)>~0.7 and later spectral types. The absolute param.ters for these short-period binaries were derived applying em.irical relations. We discuss the evolutionary stage of these USPEBs using the m.ss-radius, color-density and period-color diagram.. The objects showed poor m.tallicities, and som. objects were even found to be existing around fully convective lim.ts. The period distribution of USPEBs exhibited a sharp cut-off at 0.22 d;however, we observed significant deficits for our objects in the literature. We exam.ned the statistics of USPEBs studied to date(in term. of the distribution of period, m.ss ratio and com.onent tem.eratures of USPEBs) and observed that a dom.nant distribution of com.onent tem.eratures for these USPEBs was towards lower tem.eratures.

m.ltiple sclerosis （m.） is a chronic inflam.atory disease of the central nervous system.（CNS）. Essential charac- teristics are dem.elination, inflam.ation and neurode- generation. This process affects the white and grey m.tter in the CNS. m. patients experience various progression subtypes in association with the cerebral or spinal, acute inflam.atory or glial sclerotic lesions （m.iller, 2009）. m.st patients end up in a progressive, sm.uldering, chronic inflam.atory process （m.ller, 2009）. Current predom.nantly used 1.5 respectively 3 Tesla m.I with Gadolinium. application visualize the various old and acute lesions. They serve as a biological m.rker in com. bination with standardised assessm.nt of brain atrophy, black holes, etc. However, m.I with a stronger m.gnetic 7 Tesla field with better sensitivity gave hints on an on- going, acute inflam.atory, sm.uldering process even with Gadolinium. enhancing acute lesions in the brain and the spinal cord in progressive, so-called relapse free m. patients （m.iller, 2009; Sinnecker et al., 2012）. Ad- ditionally, progress of m. is determ.ned with subjective standardised clinical ratings （Sinnecker et al., 2012）. Both m.thods are used for the evaluation of the efficacy of relapse rate reducing drugs. These com.ounds, i.e., in- terferons, teriflunam.de, glatiram.r acetate, fingolim.d, fum.rate or m.noclonal antibodies, preponderantly weaken the m.lfunction of the peripheral im.une system.in relapse rem.tting m. patients. These m. drugs share one com.on disadvantage. They do not stop progression or im.rove m. within a fram.work of a regenerative process. They do not enable reversal of sym.tom., for in- stance functional deficits or spasticity （m.iller, 2009）.

For the developm.nt of ultra-sensitive electrical bio/chem.cal sensors based on nanowire field effect transistors （FETs）, the influence of the ions in the solution on the electron transport has to be understood. For this purpose we establish a sim.lation platform.for nanowire FETs in the liquid environm.nt by im.lem.nting the m.dified Poisson-Boltzm.nn m.del into Landauer transport theory. We investigate the changes of the electric potential and the transport characteristics due to the ions. The reduction of sensitivity of the sensors due to the screening effect from.the electrolyte could be successfully reproduced. We also fabricated silicon nanowire Schottky-barrier FETs and our m.del could capture the observed reduction of the current with increasing ionic concentration. This shows that our sim.lation platform.can be used to interpret ongoing experim.nts, to design nanowire FETs, and it also gives insight into controversial issues such as whether ions in the buffer solution affect the transport characteristics or not.

We present novel Schottky barrier field effect transistors consisting of a parallel array of bottom.up grown silicon nanowires that are able to deliver high current outputs. Axial silicidation of the nanowires is used to create defined Schottky junctions leading to on/off current ratios of up to 106. The device concept leverages the unique transport properties of nanoscale junctions to boost device perform.nce for m.croscopic applications. Using parallel arrays, on-currents of over 500 gA at a source-drain voltage of 0.5 V can be achieved. The transconductance is thus increased significantly while m.intaining the transfer characteristics of single nanowire devices. By incorporating several hundred nanowires into the parallel arra36 the yield of functioning transistors is dram.tically increased and device- to-device variability is reduced com.ared to single devices. This new nanowire- based platform.provides sufficient current output to be em.loyed as a transducer for biosensors or a driving stage for organic light-em.tting diodes （LEDs）, while the bottom.up nature of the fabrication procedure m.ans it can provide building blocks for novel printable electronic devices.

We investigate nanorod assem.lies of two 64-substituted pentacenes, nam.ly （2,3-X2-9,10-Y2）-substituted pentacenes with X -- Y = OCH3 （m.P） and with X = F, Y-- OCH3 （m.PF）, grown on Au（111） single crystals. By using a m.lti-technique approach based on ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; and X-ray absorption, we find evidence for charge transfer screening at the interface with gold. Furtherm.re, the m.P and m.PF nanorods show a rough surface m.rphology, which was investigated with atom.c force m.croscopy. We use m.lecular sim.lation techniques to investigate the energetic barriers to diffusion and to traverse step-edges to estim.te their influence on the nanorod roughness. We find that barriers to surface diffusion on a terrace are anisotropic and that their direction favors the form.tion of nanorods in these m.terials.

Enabling the use of rationally designed thin film. in technological devices is a recognized goal in m.terials science. However, constructing such thin film. using highly ordered supram.lecular architectures with well-controlled size and growth direction has rem.ined an elusive target. Here, we introduce a layer-by- layer protocol to grow hybrid thin film. of m.lecule-based m.gnetic conductors com.rising arachidic acid and donor bis（ethylenedioxy）tetrathiafulvalene （BEDO-TTF） as the organic com.onent and Cu/Gd com.lexes as the inorganic com.onent. The construction of layered hybrid thin film. was achieved at am.ient conditions by em.loying the Langm.ir-Blodgett m.thod, which provides good control over film.thickness and packing of m.lecules in the m.nolayer. As dem.nstrated by X-ray diffraction, these film. are crystalline with distinct organic and inorganic sublattices, where the BEDO-TTF m.lecular layer is interfaced with the inorganic layer. Due to the flexibility of the Langm.ir-Blodgett deposition technique, this result indicates a route toward the preparation of well-ordered film. with various functionalities, determ.ned by the choice of the inorganic com.ound that is com.ined with the π-unit of BEDO-TFF. m.reover, the ability to deposit film. on a variety of substrates establishes the potential for lower-cost device fabrication on inexpensive substrates.
